Why Bioware *wants* to tell another hero's story

... is because they've invested a lot of time into Dragon Age as a world with lots of different interest points in time and space (the vast majority of which we still have no idea about I'm sure) and they need to get people used to the idea that Dragon Age is about more than one or two specific heroes in Ferelden and its immediate neighbors.

That was the original design intent by the writers from everything they've ever said about it. It doesn't mean the original Warden necessarily won't return. It doesn't mean Hawke necessarily won't return. But it does mean Dragon Age as a franchise is about the world and its events (and how your choices influence them), not just the Grey Wardens or Kirkwall.

Don't get me wrong: while I agree that this is a great way to create a great long-lasting franchise both from a story telling (each story is important in its own right and doesn't have to one-up the previous one in importance) and a marketing (as the press release says, DA2 is a new entry point for the franchise, and so will at least some future DA games I'm sure) point of view, I am also annoyed that the DAA epilogue usually said the Warden would suddenly disappear after some years (hinting at an important event) and we still don't know what happened there. I'd have felt there was better closure if Awakening had never happened and we'd have gone directly from DAO to DA2 - but if DA3 or even a DA2 expansion lets you play as the DAO warden then it makes sense. If not, I suppose closure could be achieved in some other way.

More importantly... it must have been decided that DA2 would have another hero much before DAO was even released; you don't develop a game of this scale in less than 1.5 years! And that hints at another reason why DA2 has another hero: when they started pre-production, probably years ago, they didn't know how successful DAO was going to be. They needed a sequel that would create a new entry point. And as I said several times already (given the kind of comments some people are posting I figure repetition can't hurt), the lore was apparently designed with that in mind. Bioware never really considered continuing the Warden's story before telling Hawke's, so if you want to send death threats, I suggest you send them through a time machine ;) They can still continue the Warden's story later, so instead of complaining about what is already done let's just nicely try to convince them to do it sooner rather than later.

Few games have their world and history designed from the start to allow for sequels with different heroes or completely different times. Bioware says this is the story they want to tell now, just like DAO was the story they wanted to tell then. I say we trust them.

Haven't read all of it but some at the beggining.
Have to say, if I'm no longer a grey warden in DA2 so much the better.
I really didn't like the idea of someone of us having to die each time an archdemon was slain.
I'd love the freedom to not be a gray warden.
If you remember in BG we were trying to get out of our predicament. Whatever course you chose to take, it could be because you wanted to save the world or because simply you wanted out of everybody chasing you. I loved that freedom of choice :)

To be honest, this is a choice that actually shouldn't have to be justified.

I trust Mr. Gaider, Ms. Kirby and the others with their world and so should everyone else.

They could possibly give you a choice to become a Grey Warden if you want to or not, it could have serious impacts on the storyline.

I actually believe this was a wise move,

Wardens are true "legendary" heroes who actually only have a place when there is a blight and since there isnt a blight it could be interesting to learn about the world from a normal heroes view.

As long as your save from DA:O will me importable so how you changed the world will come with then I'm happy.

And it's nice not to have two different series completely mirror each other ala ME and DA.

Showing the world from another's eyes gives a fuller perspective

I'm happy that they are trying something new it will be cool playing a game that takes place over the span of 10 years. Why do some people need to keep playing the same character in every game? in some franchises it works well but with a series like Dragon Age it's good to show different characters and present new storylines

I'm pretty sure all of BioWare's stories have been the hero's story.

I'm glad we're getting someone other than the Warden. I don't want to tread the old Grey Warden and Blight ground for the rest of the DA franchise.

I could care less im not the same character, hell my main character did the ultimate sacrifce.

And them forceing me to be human isnt that bad either (on my first play through i wanted to be human anyway) I just hope i get the chance to pick my origin

Agreed. As much as I love how ME follows the story of a single character, I just can't bring myself to feel the same way about DA. Maybe it's because Shepard's story was blatantly episodic from the beginning, and we knew that we had yet to hear the full tale of their fight against the reapers after the first game hit the shelves - where as DA clearly wraps up the problem of the Blight in one neat little package that left little room for more exposition about that particular problem. (Until the next one happens that is, but by that time our favorite Wardens would most likely be long since dead.) Shepard is still having the greatest adventure of their lives, where as our dear Wardens' have already finished theirs.

With all that said however, once Shepard is done eliminating the Reapers I'd feel the same way about the ME series as I do about DA - in terms of them needing to move onto another set of characters if they wish to continue the fanchise. Sometimes you can do more harm than good when you decide to extend a story beyond it's natural limits.
