An evil looter from the aftermath of Ostagar found the lower half of Duncan's face (that got sliced off by that Darkspawn madly charging towards him in the cutscene) and recognising the kickass beard attached to the skin, brought it with him to Lothering to sell. Unfortunately, taking a shortcut through a farmer's field, he stepped on a poisoned trap and died instantly...his remains were later eaten by a hungry Bodahn and Sandal. The beard got flung into a patch of long-grass and were it not for destiny's sweeping hand it would be lost forever. Luckily, as Hawke's family fled Lothering Hawke found the article of hairy manliness and was absolutely enamored with it. Using a crude form of homemade glue made from dung, shredded chantry newsletters and deep mushrooms, he attached it to his face. The beard's adventure could now continue on a new host, its dark motives still unknown...
...or not?
I'd love a Duncan cameo but doubt they can fit it in without being a bit hamfisted.

Obviously, being a newborn in Lothering, you are only in a position to drink milk for XP.

Good point, but I doubt he's alive. As I said in a previous post, Duncan was a character that was meant to serve as an example. By that I mean, he served as an example of weakness by being unable to save the King and himself. On the flip side of that, he also served as an example of strength by him fighting bravely to the end. He's a symbol, either positive or negative, to the player character that serves as a motivation to be stronger either by striving to prove you're superior to him or by striving to be as much of a hero as he was. I doubt the writers would bring him back because it would severely cheapen his death and what it meant.joriandrake wrote...

That doesn't always mean they're alive. I hate this example, but from what I remember Desperate Housewives is narrated by a character who killed herself in the first episode of the show. In fact, narration is done just as often by dead characters as it is by living ones. It really just comes down to the direction of the story.balchagi wrote...
I always thought he was alive because he narrated the ending.

Duncan is dead. If he appears again, it would have to be in a story that takes place prior to Origins, if anything

He would be a great nemesis to the Warden if he returns as an intelligent darkspawn

Woah, I must of missed a major cut-scene or something. All I got from DA:O was Duncan is a workaholic.

I am so convinced that Duncan is the Architect.
Not possible - if you read the books, he meets the Architect.
Reading the books sheds a whole new light on Duncan, and actually made me like him (during the game, I didn't like him at all).
Sorry if I've given anything away for anyone. This forum really needs a 'spoiler' thingy, to hide potential spoilers.

Not surprising, given his history
