It seems that once a speciialization is unlocked, it stays that way so you can buy the books for 'free'. 

I was messing around in camp and had bought the ranger book.  I went through a dialog and messed up rep with Zevran so I reloaded a previous save.  When I went to buy the book, it was gone from the merchant and the specialization was still active for me but my gold total was back to before I bought the book.

I experimented with the Templar book and was able to recreate it.  So, just save before you buy a book then restore the save afterwards for free specializations.

That's that way because unlocking specializations is a sort of "achievement". Once you unlock it, it's supposed to be available for all playthroughs. Not necessarily a bug, but an exploit.

Good catch. In line with that, I don't like how achievements are global; I prefer WoW's method of keeping them per-character. Kinda boring playing a new character and not getting any achievements because my first character already got many of them.
