shamans use nature magic from the spirits. Lighting, lava etc. They are spiritual leaders, not puss.ies who sit in a tower learning from books. They live in the wild and learn from experience. They also kick ass and can fight in melee with claws and shields

I'd rather Bioware not follow anyone else's definition of shaman and be original by following its first definition. Shamans are spiritual middlemen. So are mages.

Mmm...arguably in the DA mythos, the Fade is analogous to an Eastern mythology style spirit world. So I guess it depends on your definition of spirit, but the last I checked Wynne was definitely a spirit healer, and the kind of magic Velanna used was similar in theme to a shaman.

Yeah, I get it, except I don't learn words like shaman from Blizzard. Bioware doesn't have to follow Warcraft's lore on shamans. They're the guys that wear flowy clothing and beat their drums in town squares.

Heh.
I feel the need to bring up Gaider's Laws of Naming Things once again, of which there are two:
1) No matter what you name something, because the only only bar to evaluate it is personal preference everyone will immediately hate it.
2) Eventually, once they begin to associate that name with the thing, they won't be able to imagine what else it could possibly have been called.
Never. Every time I think of Hawke or Hawk as a character I see this:

It has been burned into my brain and nothing can undo the horror.
