Hell, on that note why not have companions that make themselves useful in camp rather than just stand around?
Something like you could do with the Apprentices in the Sphere of Wizardry (or whatever it was called) in BG2 if you were a Wizard yourself. Past a certain trigger, have companions who just go out and collect herbs, or offer to repair your battle-worn armour to make it more efficient, or be given a conversation option to give them orders or ask favours. And if it's just the party bard occasionally singing a new tune in the background.
This.
It'd be nice to pick up companions for a reason instead of just because they were there. As much as I liked Zev, Wynne, and Oghren they really didn't offer me something I didn't already have in Lel, Morrigan, and Sten/Alistair/Shale other than some new personalities.
So I'd like to see something like:
-A female Qunari. Either Warrior or Rogue. Tal'Vashoth obviously since women can't be warriors under the Qun. But, she's a smith which is why she knows how to fight.
In camp/base she provides her services to forge customized armor and weapons (think Winter Forge mod) and upgrades your gear.
-A male soldier, definately warrior. Maybe the battled-hardened-lone-survivor type guy.
In camp you can spar with him to build up xp and learn new classes.
-Drunken apostate city-elf mage, male or female doesn't matter.
In camp he or she can be the one who makes potions and poisons from the ingredients you pick up in the world.
-Superserious SOBER dwarf. Female. Preferably Dagna. class doesn't matter.
In camp she makes custom runes (thanks to her studious work at the circle) and enchants your gear.
So uh... a bit like the way they worked in Awakening except instead of a bunch of random merchants I don't care about it's your companions instead.
