Still Time! What kind of companions would you like to see in DA2?

It's ten years since the First one, he'd be all grown up (well as grown up as a dwarf gets). His little appearance at the end of DA:O suggests he's packing major mojo. It'd be nice twist on things to play as a Drawf mage, especially one thats slightly unhinged. Although It'd be nice if he were able to talk a bit more, enchantment would get boring.

Also, if we are to have elves in the party, I'd like a female elven romance option. Why? Because Elves are sexy. {smilie}

Salander made me think of "salamander" and made me realize how much it would be awesome to have a flying blue cat as a companion we could name "Happy"

Lol... what? Are you implying we HAVEN'T had serious elves? Slap pointy ears on it then toss it into a fantasy game/movie/show, call it an elf, and it has instantly been done to death. Damn elves.

It's more than just the look though...her whole attitude and back story are just awesome.

- Female, Human (good match for standard Hawke)
- Antivan. Dark of complexion, dark eyed.
- Warrior. Arena, "gladiator" type fighter
Personality:
- Brash, bold, with attitude.
- Passionate, but quick temper
- EXTREMELY competitive. Hence the rivalry
- Fiercely independent.
- Does not have the "wall," that once you get past, she is all sensitive and cuddly. Will only respect the strong, aggressive and hard willed men as equals, and even then only barely
Appearance:
- Antivan, so the dark eyed, dark haired "latina" look.
- As a love interest she must be beautiful; but not flawless.
- Her body (if there is variations in 3d models this time for those of a particular race..) should reflect that she's a warrior and be realistic... aka not exactly 36-24-36 curves. Maybe a smaller, slimmer build but whom fights light and dexterously?
- Face. Dark, beautiful eyes, but not your standard supermodel face. Maybe a slightly hooked nose for personality and to match her flashing eyes, or a similar feature. Think Faile Bashere from WoT.
Maybe she could meet Hawke at some type of arena or fighters challenge as an opponent, and begin the rivalry there. She probably gets a great deal of sexist disrespect from male combatants; this fuels her determination to prove herself in battle. They may banter, but the competitiveness is high. You and she compete for the title, and she is set intentionally difficult so that you are meant to lose. She brags; maybe some other sequence; the event ends and she leaves. You later discover that something has been tampered with (your equipment, you being drugged, etc.) but she's already gone, and also that it was not done by her, but by someone else who loves her but did not believe she could beat Hawke, the famous champion etc, and so interferes without her knowledge. Then later in the game when you chance upon her again you can challenge her to a rematch outside arena regulations, she would at first decline; until you are able to prove that she did not beat you on even terms. The rematch is a very very difficult but winnable match, but that gets interrupted by common enemies who she and Hawke are forced to fight together against overwhelming odds. After this either a reason can be found for her to join you, or you could meet her again yet later in the game, but the important part is that there is tension due to the fact that you don't get to resolve the "who is better" competitiveness right away. And once you do- well, sparks will fly. Hot, sexy, passionate sparks.

Overall I really like the idea. And the reference to Faile really helped, but now that you mentioned WoT, I have to wonder how awesome a Min Farshaw would be. Kind of awkward and tomboyish and non-confrontational (at first) but very dedicated and loyal. Someone who doesn't immediately scream ROMANCE when she is introduced (*cough*Miranda*cough*). It feels like you get the confident, self-assured personalities all the time. Oh man I forgot how much I love Min. Favorite character in the whole series.- Face. Dark, beautiful eyes, but not your standard supermodel face. Maybe a slightly hooked nose for personality and to match her flashing eyes, or a similar feature. Think Faile Bashere from WoT.

As great as Min is, it took her a while to become that interesting or developed in the series. I wonder just how well the things that make her great could be translated into a game story. Because -- other than her tomboyish appearance (until the tight pants and overall sexiness are introduced
I wasn't sure about making a Faile reference really, as she was never a character I grew to like all that much, but I was realizing that my character idea was sounding a lot like her lol. I feel like I could keep fleshing out that particular character idea, but make it a little bit less generic, but really, who has the time?

Yeah I never liked Faile all that much either (and I really hated how the Perrin/Faile ship was handled...don't even get me started), but she does have a personality that's all her own, which is I guess why the reference works.the-expatriate wrote...

Because -- other than her tomboyish appearance (until the tight pants and overall sexiness are introduced-- it would be difficult to get across that fiercely loyal, yet outwardly goofy personality, like how she always calls Rand things like sheepherder, woolhead, etc..

I feel like I could keep fleshing out that particular character idea, but make it a little bit less generic, but really, who has the time?In theory, I have a thing for characters that are good in many ways, but deeply flawed. Oh god, I think I just explained my dating habits; so that's why I always end up going for girls with severe emotional issues.
Haha. Seriously. My friends tease me about it.
For Min, I think her taking a long amount of time to "come out of her shell" is what I liked so much. I mean, how's she supposed to compete with the daughter heir and someone who's naked with Rand as often as not. She knows the nature of her vision right from the get-go and yet she's non-confrontational and almost submissive to the other two...so when she finally does "go for it" it makes it that much better. Almost every other female in those books is strong-willed and confident (which is good, don't get me wrong), but I like rooting for the underdog I guess.
Anyway, I think I'm exactly like you. Flaws, baggage, issues, neuroses...yes please.

I wish games like those Bioware makes had the opportunity to allow such character growth; slowly but surely, and therefore worming their way into your deepest affection. However, when I think about how Bioware introduces new characters for their games, it's almost always with a character hook, and a 'bang' ... they come out the door in ready for action, meant to come off as interesting and cool from the get-go. Case in point, remember the trailer reveal for ME2's Jack? Then the explosive scene in game? Most characters, once introduced, don't change their persona wildly by then end. Those sorts of changes would have to span across several games, but it seems Bioware is taking a different approach for DA than, say, the BG series.
And, just as an aside: I think the reason guys like us go for the ones with flaws and emotional baggage is because, let's face it, the perfectly pretty, perfectly happy, perfectly talented and pleasantly dispositioned etc, flawless girl... is really not that interesting.
...That, and we couldn't get her if we tried
Before this gets completely off topic though, I should mention: these types are just as interesting when created as character archetypes

I think you're pretty much right on the money, about all of that. I do have a little more hope for DA2, though, compared to DAO and other games, given the game's 10-year span. That could really open up a whole universe of possiblities in terms of character growth that most games just can't have for logistical reasons if not dramatic ones.the-expatriate wrote...

Before this gets completely off topic though, I should mention: these types are just as interesting when created as character archetypesDifference is, almost all women in games are overly perfect, appearance-wise. Unfortunately, people have come to expect it. And I can't say it bothers me, as long as they have personality.

Wields a two-handed great axe with huge arms and a head full of battle-rage. He is a lover of battle, women, pillage and alcohol. He understands but does not respect his enemies. He is extremely confident to the annoyance of his comrades.
He joins Hawkes group much like zevran did. Losing in battle and being spared by Hawke. He views women as enjoyable pleasures (for both sides in his mind) so a romance with FemHawke is possible but he would see it as a fling. He could become enraptured with FemHawke later on.
