I've seen many complaints about the lack of origin stories in DA2. I, however, don't see why they couldn't be returning.
Taken directly from GI's "Five Facts About Hawke": "Kirkwall is a major population center in the Free Marches, a collection of city-states north of Ferelden. This means that at least some of the action in Dragon Age II will be set in Kirkwall itself, though Hawke will also spend time in other areas of the Free Marches. What exactly Hawke does to earn the honorary title of Champion, however, is up to you."
My theory: The game opens with a cutscene featuring a Darkspawn assault against Lothering. At this point in time, Hawke is a child. After the scene, we gain access to the character creation system, with which we can decide Hawke's gender, appearance...and origin. The first game featured six origins, so this one can, perhaps, feature the same number -- two per class with three classes.
The first few hours of the game are then spent playing out the origin, and depending on which you choose, you'll become the Champion of Kirkwall in a different way, just as each origin story in Origins was concluded with the Warden being recruited by Duncan into the Gray Wardens.
Unless it's been specifically announced that the origins are gone, I'll hold fast to my belief that I will indeed choose how Hawke rises from penniless peasant to champion of Kirkwall.

It doesn't start off with six branches and shoot off into infinite directions, it starts at one. There are no more origins. YOU. ARE. HAWKE.
And Hawke is awesome.

Human refugee only.

Human refugee indeed. But Hawke can be a mage, can he not? Wouldn't he need specialized training for that? The origin story could be when that human refugee becomes a warrior, rogue, or mage.
And I never said that it would "shoot off into infinite directions". It could start at six different points that shoot off in the...same direction. That's what I said, right?

Nauces in the ending brought on by your reaction to events during the path. Think of the choices you made in DA:O with the Templar/Mages, Bhelen/Harrowmont, etc. Combine that with Origins, important choices, small choices with small impacts, and the results for the final ending approach extremely high numbers, the use of which I replace with the use of infinity. Infinite, no, large, yes.
