As cool as DAO was, it was missing moments like these

Digging through some screenshots, I found a couple that really reminded me why I play these games.  These moments are not epic or action packed.  Rather, they are small and quiet moments, very personal and very, VERY immersive.  Just of me taking a moment to appreciate the world the developers created.  I do that a lot in the games I play.  And when I find myself just forgetting that I'm actually playing a game, and am just staring at the screen, listening to the music and taking in the scenery, I know they've got me.  That the developers did their job.

A couple of moments that really grabbed me were in these screenshots.  They are from Oblivion and Drakensang. Now, Oblivion was absolutely LOADED with moments like those as you traveled across Cyrodiil.  And I'm finding travelling through the world of Drakensang to be very similar.

Dragon Age was a good game and I enjoyed it.  I've played all the DLC and the expansion.  But one thing that it seems to be missing are these High Fantasy moments, I guess, where I just stop and admire the world I'm in and kind of just let the game take me away.  Hopefully, Dragon Age 2 will have small moments like these while we're out travelling the world.  Oh, and just for good measure, the music playing in the background of that Oblivion screenshot was Auriel's Ascension.

Here's to BW creating these little moments. :)

Denerim if you found a good spot it sort of looked like that...except you were in the town.

DAO had those moments its just that there was always soemthing more interesting to do so you never found them easily.

If you like that kind of thing, give Red Dead Redemption a try. The sense of place in that game is wonderful, and the skybox/weather/lighting is unreal.

Oh yes, I know exactly what you mean!

Oblivion had a vast load of such moments, that's why I'll always enjoy playing it. (Well... except for the mainquest)

Same goes for the ME - series. There are so many breathtaking and beautiful views that I often just find myself standing there and rotating the camera to take them in, to observe alll those little details.

Granted, DAO didn't stand much out in this regard, but it did have it's moments. Like when you first come to Orzammar and look up those vast caves and buildings. Or Ostagar was pretty impressive itself.

But it's true... sometimes it felt like I did see most of the scenery already, that it doesn't stand out. I did not have many moments of this WOW-effect in DAO.

I hope too that DA2 will have such moments and impress with it's immersive environments and artistic splendor. :)

Actually, to be fair, I did find one screenshot I took in DAO from the siege at Ostagar. I was crossing the bridge with Alistair to get to the Tower of Ishal and just happened to swing the camera to the side and caught this image of the advancing darkspawn horde. This was a nice moment, even though I had to keep moving because, as you can see, there were flaming projectiles headed toward us. :)

Ferelden is a massive hole, and it's the one instance where I'm not too keen on Bioware taking the "darker fantasy" route, because the developers seemed to think it includes making every setting look dreary and drab as hell. Like real life, y'know?

But it's not! Because real life scenery can be fulfilling. It can be absolutely god-damn breathtaking! And real life can sometimes look like a giant public toilet! The trick is to strike a balance - toilet and beautiful. Ferelden is just a toilet.

EDIT: TOILET!

I completely agree with you ckriley. Origins was really lacking when it came to epic looking vistas or really unique and awesome environments. They don't have to be a sandbox game to make awe inspiring environments either.

It just seemed like the areas were always quite bland and generic and the skies always hazy and overcast. If I'm up in Haven on a mountain top I expect it to be like in the Sacred Ashes trailer, where they were really climbing up a mountain and be able to look out beyond and see some awesome environment sprawling out below.

And making a nice environment isn't just artistic but the technical side with good lighting, shadows, textures and shaders are really important. Its kind of hard to get immersed in the game world when the textures are all blobby and the lighting is horribly static.

Oblivion is a beautiful game, specially with better environment pack, better bodies pack, awesome mods, etc. I have 2 level 54 chars with over 500 hours each and I can't bring myself to finish the game.

Drakensang is another awesome game.

DA:O is never going to stand out for its graphics although there are cool moments. And the one thing these 3 games have in common... NO voiced acting SHEPA HAWKE to ruin my role play!

You'd love the "borracchudos" in our lovely Brazilian beaches!

I didn't have a very good PC at the time I took these. Had to down res and effects to make it playable. It was a demanding game at that time. I must give it another go with my not-so-new-anymore system but still very powerful for gaming.

Sorry Leliana, my Nina was a hotter!
