Bioware says the game will be based through a ten year period. Now the only way I could think of them actually going through the story is either chapters or acts. I'm thinking they would tell Hawkes story kind of like a book only on an cinematic level. This would make sense and it would be easy for them to create the story that way.
In DA:O the game isn't chapters, but more of a Real time travel game.  Mostly because its based off your story.
Now there a couple other ways they could go about doing this. They could also make the game based off of evens of Years so at the being of Hawke's adventure. Its year 1 and we would play him leaving lothering at the end of this year. We have another even say it shows something from DA:O. This would lead into the 2nd year and so on and so forth.
I think this is a very intriguing subject to think about from a writers perspective. As for time and money wise it would be easier to tell a story like this in segments. For some reason it just doesn't seem to work if you think about it with Hawke moving around on his own through a ten year period.
How Bioware will make the world explorable is also something I'm pondering. See you can only move so much if you are making a chapter game. Now NWN 2 had Acts and they worked quite well, but the world changes over a ten year period. In the Acts in NWN2 the world didn't change much. It did to some degree, but the NPC where pretty much in the same spots.
Bioware would have to make this some how different with the though with the even being explain from the old game and how we are brought on buy this new tale. Now people have suggested that bioware would mention in the Notes like at the end of the game, but this story doesn't seem like it would be able to do this. Just because we are entering into a New style of playing cinematically. 
Through the Ten year process the world would have to change in a very certain degree do to attacks like the darkspawn and the civil wars kind of factions that was going on during Logain's rain.
But my main concern is how they would go about telling the story in this fashion do to a Ten year play through?
Would it be based by acts, chapters, or years? Thoughts?

You are mentioning a lot of points that i also thought of. I am especially intrigued by the fact that time does seem to play some kind of role from a story perspective.

I think they will work with timeskips after certain events are triggered in the world/story so it would be kind of chapters like.

Although i like being the hero i'd like to see the heroic acts presented in a more relatable way let the main character have his inner conflicts about his action have him doubt. Then let the tales of his deeds do the rest to make him seem like an invincible hero. I like the contrast between reality and myth to see some reference to that would be great.

I mean we are seeing this story from a third person perspective which is why I thinking the same way on how they would go about this. This idea though would lead into segements later on. It would make the third person narrative easy to write.

I like the chapters idea they did it in Jade Empire and it worked perfectly!
