What I don't understand is how Hawke got to be such a powerful mage without formal training. Even if his father was an excellent teacher and an extremely knowledgable mage, Hawke wouldn't have access to, for example, all those books on magic, and wouldn't be able to openly practice spells and such.
How can Hawke be a mage?

You do realize Hawke is going to start out at level one right? She's not going to start the game as a super powerful arch mage, which means she'll have a spell or two under her belt which seems perfectly acceptable for someone who was trained by her father.
That or she sold her soul for super sweet magic.
