That reminds me: Didn't the GI article come with pictures ? I mean it can't hardly be just 10 pages of text, can it ?

What new art direction? You can barely derive anything from those two inch x inch early screenshots. The most I can think you might be talking about is the more tattered and spiky darkspawn armor, which makes sense in the context of lore given that it's all supposed to be scavenged.

The design of the new darkspawn armour is  simply impractical.  I mean, the Darkspawn weren't exactly practical to begin with but atleast their armour made some sense. (You could tell it was originally a more practical armour that other races may have actually used at one point)  The new armour feels like it was designed to give a certain silouhette rather than be effective in combat.

If you're referring to the spikes, I'm sure they could find some way to make them combat effective.

And even if they don't, seeing something like that on a monster lowers morale incredibly, and that's just as effective as a stab to the jugular.

Eleven screenshots and some concept art.

make them combat effective.

It's not like the 15 ft tall Ogre really needed to be more intimidating.

But the more intimidating they make it, the better.

The problem with ultra-realistic graphics is that they date very quickly. You can move away into the realm I'm sure some people will call cartoony and have the game hold up for double or even triple the time compared to U.R. I'm fine with any change in art style because let's be honest, Origins had no true style. It was brown and it was generic in a lot of spots with just a dash of Dragon Age letting you know where you kind of were, I think Orzammar was the only one with any kind of personal touch to it.

I hope the twelve to thirteen screenshot's floating around are W.I.P.'s though. They aren't horrible, and Origins engine was perfectly fine for me to play on, but hyping the 'super-hot' and 'stunning detail' these are not. Graphics have never been huge for me on a RPG though, so as long as it's not obscenely 'we are sooo edgy' I'm going to be perfectly fine with whatever ships.

Well that's exactly it. They're well established as impractical savage beasts without much regard to their own lives and complete devotion to the archdemon. The books have them strapping any scraps of metal to their bodies as crude armor, and this tiny, tiny screenshot that apparently seems to provide a wealth of knowledge to all you forumites as to how the game is actually going to look seems to show exactly that.

If you want a consistent explanation for the change, well... Dragon Age Origins had the darkspawn raiding villages. They would have scavenged the armor off the slain and worn it for themselves. Dragon Age 2 focuses less on the Blight - these Darkspawn may be more spread out and away from the horde, less available to scavenge armor off the dead and have to rely more heaver on, say, broken down carriages or merchants for their armor. It's weak, but it's not even that important.

Some people are going off of more two tiny screenshots. The GI article had multiple large screenshots.

It'd be nice if we could see them, but of course, no one should scan. Illegal.

World of Warcraft is the most ridiculous game ever created. It looks like its made for children. Dragonage was - emphasis on WAS - an awesome game.

You're going to be very disappointed by The Old Republic's graphics...

You best be trollin. I hate this type of art style every year there's one game that looks like it and they all ways do it poorly. I doubt I'll get unless it's the best game that year.

The one op mentioned, I hope he's trolling. I think I made that rather clear.

Dark Fantasy doesn't necessarily have to mean realistic. It's a theme and tone choice of the content and isn't necessarily tied to an art style. (Obviously the art has to suit the content, too much contrast between the two can hurt the experience)

As an aside, funny that Dragon Age's main site shows up as the second highest displayed when searching Dark Fantasy.

Indeed.  I'd say that most "dark fantasy" is decidedly unrealistic.  Fantasy-noir, even... :o

Hawke is too pretty; slightly more rugged, like the GI cover would be nice. sigh I suppose I can ruggedize him in game.
