that's tough for us adults, but lovely for the kids out there :-)

I'll still reserve judgement until I see some more, and hope for the best

But with DA being touted as an ADULT fantasy RPG like they pitched it and sold it as...this is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that bought into the game and franchise. If I want a cartoony DA game I'll play the Flash game.

But this "new & exciting" art direction is abysmal and for he birds imo

They went the kid route with SWTOR...sign of things to came apparently.

The only way to effect any change at all is to let our collective voices be heard, though it's perhaps too late in the game for that....

Though I admit to being vocally critical, like Games4ever...I'm trying to hope for the best. (not really working though) :(

I loved the original look. Why did they need to change it so drastically? That was Dragon Age to me, the semi-realistic art style they had. That was how the world was introduced.

But I'll live.  There are good things to be said, as the OP mentioned.

you can have a more artistic look and not be "for children" as you say.  Have you played Borderlands?  That game most definitely doesnt scream "for children" and looks great.

We got Borderlands because we had enjoyed Fallout 3, but to me it seems cartoonish and silly.  Realism is important to me for the sake of immersion.  I don't mind compromises that are necessary to make the game run more smoothly, but being "artistic" for the sake of... I hope that's not what is meant by a new art direction.

I feel the same way. Like how I hate the way blood splatters and yet everyone's nonchalant about it.

Only the people from Bioware can answer what they mean with a new art direction

Key Features:

•Embark upon an all-new adventure that takes place across an entire decade and shapes itself around every decision you make.

•Determine your rise to power from a destitute refugee to the revered champion of the land.

•Think like a general and fight like a Spartan with dynamic new combat mechanics that put you right in the heart of battle whether you are a mage, rogue, or warrior.

•Go deeper into the world of Dragon Age with an entirely new cinematic experience that grabs hold of you from the beginning and never lets go.

•Discover a whole realm rendered in stunning detail with updated graphics and a new visual style

.Can't wait to see the stunning detail with updated graphics, and hear what they mean by new visual style

All these changes to Dragon Age seem unnecessary to me. I'll have to wait and see I guess.

I'm So waiting... The Witcher 2 to play Dark Fantasy... 'nuff said.

Bioware designers please watch (again?) Excalibur movie to have the proper Dark Fantasy visual look you (should) look for (in my humble opinion). That would change instead of swords ala Final Fantasy (sic) =)

Yeah, because all cartoons are for kids. [Warning, wall of text coming]

People seriously need to get a grip. The first DA didn't have an art style. It looked like a game from 2003. The lighting was awful, the textures blurry and the characters' weren't really up to scratch (who has arms that long?). Let's not mention the performance of the game.

This new style is an immediate improvement, even if it's not to everyone's tastes. The benefits I can see are:

Performance: "Cartoonlike" games  can use less texture and model detail while still looking good. Less video memory and CPU hits = more performance. This can then be traded for more FPS or lot more action on the screen (more enemies, more NPCs in cities etc).

Consistency: In DA:O, you had your world and you had your entities (objects, trees, characters). These looked distinctly separate. On top of this, levels within the same area didn't look like they belonged. This art style will tie everything together - everything will look like it belongs in one cohesive world. Cohesion begets immersion and once you're immersed, you're not going to notice the style.

Longevity: As mentioned above, DA:O's graphics are already dated. They were dated when they came out. The two GameCube Zelda games - Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. TP is already starting to age. WW will be young for many years to come yet.

Artist Productivity: As you attempt to capture reality, the flaws become magnified. You notice what's wrong instead of what's right. Keeping up with it, attempting to get as close as possible to it is an absolutely fruitless endeavour. Something can always look better. Too much time can be wasted getting that suit of plate just so. With a graphic style such as this, you have a ceiling. Once you hit that, it's onto the next piece. An artist won't need to go back and polish it a bit more. Once the design is finalised, it'll be fairly straightforward to implement. This will lead to either more content or a quicker dev time, enabling money to be spent elsewhere.

Finally, constraints on realism also bring about invention - if you're going to play a fanstasy game, surely you want it to look fantastical?

I was and am quite happy with the Art Style (and there is one) of DAO.

So I respectively disagree with every point you made.

To each their own, but I think the new "style" is atrocious.

I liked the DAO are style, from what little I have seen of DA2 from the pics, it looks like some stupid cartoon look. This is a downgrade, not an upgrade. At least the witcher 2 looks good.

Not for dark fantasy, no.  It should seem gritty and realistic, with very few fantastical elements.  IMO.

Dark fantasy can be gritty and artistic. It doesn't have to look "real" to be dark fantasy.

Bioware just need to confirm that the cartoon way is the way they intend to go, the same second they do, is the same second I've forgot what Dragon age is

A cartoon style can work with certain games really well, but with a dark fantasy – I'm nowhere near convinced...

Fantasy noir? I can see where you're coming from (Demon's Souls for example), but there are plenty of dark, gritty graphical novels / comics out there (Frank Miller's for example), so the cartoony look isn't much of an argument. The screenshots shown could simply be of a bright area in full daylight.

Also, I know DA:O was marketed as "Dark Fantasy", but i've not seen anything similar for DA2. It's a different story, away from the Blight, so it may not actually be all that "Dark".

I don't see any link in the original post to this new art style, so are all of you simply referring to the concept art, or is there something more concrete here? The only in-game screenshot I saw, the graphics looked basically the same to me, except that the darkspawn looked like a different 'race' of darkspawn.

While i'm criticizing the graphics (armor & darkspawn design especially) i have to disagree with posters saying it looks cartoony. It doesn't look any more cartoony than the first one.

DA:O was not a dark fantasy. It may have been marketed as one, but it was not dark. I agree with Yahtzee where he likens it to a nerd getting a piercing to impress a goth girl.

The thing is, DAO was touted as a "dark fantasy" and people buy into that tagline. But really, it wasn't terribly dark. It was good, for sure, but only in a "this is traditional fantasy done extremely well" sort of way. Dark Fantasy is something like The Witcher. DAO, to me, wasn't really all that dark to begin with. I'm just now seeing the above post by behindyounow and it's too late to quote him, but that's basically exactly what I'm saying.

I agree. It was pretty standard stuff.

The screenshots also have no shading and are likely not final models, just a preview of what they were working on as far as the new direction goes.  I think we should wait until the trailer hits before we make any real judgments on whether the new style is good or bad.

While I have tirelessly defended many other questionable aspects of DA2, the new art direction is the one thing that rubs me the wrong way. It should remain dark fantasy/realistic style. Here's hoping those are just early builds and not the final product.
