Children will love this cartoon style and fit of course fine with rumor of teen censored
that's tough for us adults, but lovely for the kids out there :-)
I'll still reserve judgement until I see some more, and hope for the best
But with DA being touted as an ADULT fantasy RPG like they pitched it and sold it as...this is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that bought into the game and franchise. If I want a cartoony DA game I'll play the Flash game.
But this "new & exciting" art direction is abysmal and for he birds imo
They went the kid route with SWTOR...sign of things to came apparently.
The only way to effect any change at all is to let our collective voices be heard, though it's perhaps too late in the game for that....
Though I admit to being vocally critical, like Games4ever...I'm trying to hope for the best. (not really working though)
Yeah, because all cartoons are for kids. [Warning, wall of text coming]
People seriously need to get a grip. The first DA didn't have an art style. It looked like a game from 2003. The lighting was awful, the textures blurry and the characters' weren't really up to scratch (who has arms that long?). Let's not mention the performance of the game.
This new style is an immediate improvement, even if it's not to everyone's tastes. The benefits I can see are:
Performance: "Cartoonlike" games can use less texture and model detail while still looking good. Less video memory and CPU hits = more performance. This can then be traded for more FPS or lot more action on the screen (more enemies, more NPCs in cities etc).
Consistency: In DA:O, you had your world and you had your entities (objects, trees, characters). These looked distinctly separate. On top of this, levels within the same area didn't look like they belonged. This art style will tie everything together - everything will look like it belongs in one cohesive world. Cohesion begets immersion and once you're immersed, you're not going to notice the style.
Longevity: As mentioned above, DA:O's graphics are already dated. They were dated when they came out. The two GameCube Zelda games - Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. TP is already starting to age. WW will be young for many years to come yet.
Artist Productivity: As you attempt to capture reality, the flaws become magnified. You notice what's wrong instead of what's right. Keeping up with it, attempting to get as close as possible to it is an absolutely fruitless endeavour. Something can
always look better. Too much time can be wasted getting that suit of plate
just so. With a graphic style such as this, you have a ceiling. Once you hit that, it's onto the next piece. An artist won't need to go back and polish it a bit more. Once the design is finalised, it'll be fairly straightforward to implement. This will lead to either more content or a quicker dev time, enabling money to be spent elsewhere.
Finally, constraints on realism also bring about invention - if you're going to play a fanstasy game, surely you want it to look fantastical?
