Wasn't another saying, "Don't hate the playa, hate the game"?

Bad example. Compare that Origins pic to this:

They really don't look all that different.

So they're giving us a graphical overhaul after one of the main complaints of DA:O being the graphics, and people complain? Lul wut?

Not for dark fantasy, no.  It should seem gritty and realistic, with very few fantastical elements.  IMO.

Fantasy noir? I can see where you're coming from (Demon's Souls for example), but there are plenty of dark, gritty graphical novels / comics out there (Frank Miller's for example), so the cartoony look isn't much of an argument. The screenshots shown could simply be of a bright area in full daylight.

Also, I know DA:O was marketed as "Dark Fantasy", but i've not seen anything similar for DA2. It's a different story, away from the Blight, so it may not actually be all that "Dark".

I guess we would need to pin down definitions.  I think of dark fantasy as more like historical fiction with a few mythical elements.  This is why I say it should have realism.  The real-life historical bases underlying the story give it a concreteness that make it seem familiar, but given that it's a fantasy setting, you aren't bound to historical realities.  Since this is how the story is constructed, it seems to me that the artistic perspective should hew close to realism.

I thought Origins did this pretty well.  Elves look like actual people rather than donkey-eared clowns, for instance.

That'd be low Fantasy. The two often overlap however.

Serious games like DA require realistic graphics.Borderlands and WOW graphics are horrible in my view.

I think "realistic" is the wrong wording for what people are always trying to express. Realistic stuff is boring cause it mimics real life. What is the point then in having a Fantasy game world to escape to???

Some people like contrast and color, while other like it darker and shady and some people are in between.
Then you have certain levels of interactivity.
Finally is original and creative design (Planescape, Fallout..) , or just blend out of the pot fantasy (ala DA, LOTR...).

As DA I don't see anything really interesting coming of the new art direction for DA2. Very blend, and typical fantasy stuff.

Please tell me this is a bad joke! So far almost every reported change in gameplay seems to be for the worse. I'm getting a lot of doubts about this game from the info released so far and this new art direction really takes the cake. It looks just like a cartoon! Normally I don't even care much about graphics but this looks like a game for little kids. Not my cup of tea at all. If the final result will be close to this in style it will be an easy choice not buying this game (combined with all the other nice new features like dialogue wheel, etc.). I really hope I'm wrong but as of now I don't see much positive about DA2.

It pretty funny, after playing DAO I never would have thought that I would be hesitant about buying a sequel...

how.....typical.

you take his quote..and apply it to a comparison pic of DA2 vs one of the most simply drawn cartoons out there...why didn't you just apply it to South Park...

and while I'm not going to search out an example...DA2 (while I'm also not saying I like or dislike it) DOES look more "cartoony" then DA:O

try again...fail less.

I'll be the first to say that "art" is a subjective subject/medium at best.

There are those that swear up and down that WoW is the best looking game they've ever played. And others that dislike the "style"...or though they roll with it, it's really doesn't excite them. It's in a word "acceptable".

Look at a Norman Rockwell painting and then a Monet...and then a Frazetta. They are ALL the top of their respective styles and considered "icons".

But one would have to agree that there is a vast difference in "detail" between all three.

I happen to lean towards the more detail the better.

Another example would be to compare Jack Kirby to Todd Mcfarlane or Steve Ditko to John Byrne...they all at one time (and now) have their fans that consider them their favorite comic artist.

Are any of them "wrong" to consider their favorite artist the best? Not really. But it comes down to a matter of tastes. Mine like I said is largely based on the level of detail...the higher the better.

Though..."sometimes" pure style and creativity can trump detail even for me. Most if not all of Frank Miller's work would fall into this category.

DAO for me has a style and lvl of detail that I find amazing, both in tone and presentation.

Every screeshot I've seen of DA2 simply pales in comparison. There is a lack of detail and the gritty realism that I personally felt that Bioware specifically created for their DA IP...they sold it as a more graphic and adult rpg experience.

Now we have a completely different visual approach, one that is less detailed and imo more bland.

Like DAO is AKIRA ....and we all wait for DA2 and it comes out looking like the 80's Superfriends show..."most" would be like WTF? Though I know in my heart of hearts there would be some who swore they LOVED the Superfriends art style and direction lol

So it's subjective that's true...but Art can be critiqued and judged in several ways across the board. One way is level of detail.

And for me, all that I've seen as it relates to DA2 is a step backwards from what we originally had.

I don't know how to describe it any better than this....

One last example would be the art design for Age of Conan vs SWTOR or KOTOR...there is a vast difference between the style and lvl of detail.

Guess which one I prefer over the other ;)

But it's a tricky thing, for KOTOR it worked great. But now think of how AoC2 would look with that "same" graphic style of KOTOR lol

That wouldn't work at all imo

That's how I feel about DA2...we're going backwards!

Microsoft exclusive RPG Fable II was "terribly messy", "rushed" and suffered from "huge design flaws", creator Peter Molyneux has admitted

Wonder if they will say the same after this game comes out :-)

sorry folks, it was rushed

Apparently the new art director worked on Jade Empire. I haven't played that game, so perhaps those that have could comment on how you think it bears on the "new art direction."

The Darkspawn remind me of the martians from Mars Attacks and that's not good. The new visual style does, in parts, seem a touch too cartoony or comical.
I prefer photorealistic style for an RPG. It just makes the characters more believable and real hence easier to connect emotionally with. Stylized and exaggerated visuals work better in an action game.

David said that the game looks a lot better than it does in those original screenshots. And the one with Hawke and Bethany is from the Game Informer article, I think.

I think Jade Empire is still Bioware's best looking game, obviously not on a technical level since it's an older game, but the enviroments in particular are more impressive than anything they've done since.

You can see the dialogue wheel, it's mid-conversation, so it's a "cutscene" but it's rendered in real-time by the game engine, exactly like the shot with Morrigan and Flemeth.
Except it looks better. :)
