This subject was brought up in a previous thread but since it was brought up in what started as a "Bioware you ruined Dragon Age 2" thread I have decided to give it its own thread devoted to the discussion of the topic.

To start of here is what Ray Muzyka has to say on predefined characters

"Here's how the games are different: Dragon Age is a first person narrative, where you're taking on an origin and a role, and you are that character at a fundamental level. It's fundamentally about defining your character, including those kinds of concepts," Dr. Ray told IGN. "In Mass Effect it's more a third-person narrative, where you have a pre-defined character who is who he is, or she is. But it's not a wide-open choice matrix. It's more choice on a tactical level with a pre-defined character. So they're different types of narratives, and that's intentional."

"We're not saying that one approach is better than the other. In our previous games, as we did in Jade Empire, as we did in KOTOR, as we did in Baldur's Gate, and many games before and in the future, we enable those kinds of choices, whereas in Mass Effect it's more about Shepard as a defined character with certain approaches and worldviews, and that's just who he or she is. So we constrain the choice set somewhat, but enable more tactical choices and enable a deeper, richer personality, because it's more focused around defining one character, it's not as wide open. But that's by choice."

"It's first person versus third person narrative, and the types of choices you get to make within that are related to that, whether you've got a pre-defined character or a wide-open character. Some of our games have been wide open, and some have been more constrained, and we'll probably continue both kinds of character development in the future."

This is mostly about Shepard but it also points out a lot of my fears with this new Hawke character. While I know that it is impossible for Dragon Age 2 to have the same level of choice when defining your characters personality since the addition of voice acting and origins and races have been taken out but there was still a lot of choice when defining your character within a single origin. Take the human noble for example, you could go from a brave warrior with a sense of duty and honor to a cowardly and immoral backstabbing rouge who cares more about his coin purse than the troubles of the world. Will we have the same level of choice for Hawke when defining his personality?

Will Hawke range from coward to hero? Good or Evil? Gay or Straight?

Discuss.

Commander Shepard is a much more specific character than Hawke is. Shepard is one very particular marine chosen to do a particularly challenging job. Hawke is somebody who goes from being a refugee to being important to Thedas history somehow.  Defining who Hawke turns out to be and how that happens is sort of where the player comes in to the story.

Yes we have heard Hawke will be more flexible than Shepard but will he be as flexible as a single origin in Origins? Or will Hawke still have somewhat of a predefined view on the world and certain things such as homosexuality?

Worldview is one of the things that Dragon Age is about.  Your character's personal perspective on the issues and events of Thedas were a crucial part of the story, and we'd like to keep it that way for DA2.

And you are totally not going to trick me into talking about what the romance options are yet. Don't even try. :P
