I think DAO suffered mostly from a lack of music. There wasn't enough of it. A lot of themes were re-used-- most egregiously, IMO, when the high dragon theme was re-used for the archdemon. What's this? A final boss without a final boss theme? Inconceivable!

100% agree.  Comes across as abit dry.  When playing a fantasy game I was unashamidly self important  dramatic parts, like Lord Of The Rings.

Dragon Age had it's parts, like the lemon head calling the charge at Ostigar, it felt very unified and was probably  the best movie sequence in the game. Player felt apart of it, important, to something important going on.

www.youtube.com/watch

Other parts of the game such as companion side quests didn't emotionally resonate in the slightest. Likewise with the ending. The part music used during the mage tower boss fight was great.

Another anoying thing about the music, was this peice used early in the game."Battle of Lothering Village"

www.youtube.com/watch

This seemed like the sort of music you use when you are about half way  though the game, knowing your companions well having spend hours  playing, not something you use with a recently started journey, killing  bears in field, baldy placed.

This is great advice, Bioware should take this if they want a 98 metacritic rating.

The main issue I have noticed with Inon Zur, (and why I hope another composer is hired) is that he does great calamity music. However, when it comes to setting a scene or a mood with music, he frunks bad. His work on the main theme and the battle of ostigar was great, but the typical battle music, as well as most of the regular walking music, tended to clash with the situation. (Excluding places like Camp and Lothering) In addition, Inon writes very weak cords, so for the most part, his music is neither pleasant nor 'hummable'.

When it comes to an RPG, I think fitting music is a big deal. If a person remembers a hectic and awesome battle because of a specific track, he will probably grow very attached to it, and thus, the game, recommending it to more friends, resulting in more people buying it. However, try as I might, epic images don't spring to mind when playing the track from the deep roads. If Dragon Age 2 wants to live up to it's "epic story" hype, it needs to have epic music that stirs the player.

"That's just my opinion though. You don't need to go spreading it around."

P.S. Harry Potter has had some four composers over the course of the movie series, and the music has remained very similar to John William's original score. Pretty sure a game can pull off what movies have been doing for years.

Overall I loved the soundtrack. But, I loved the Fallout 3 music as well, and it was mostly background minimalist music (e.g., the "Explore 7" theme is great for me). I thought he had some great accomplishments within this one, such as the Dalish Elves Encampment wind instrument piece, but I agree that there was a lot of re-hashing of the main theme.

I would love to hear a darker version like the original poster suggested, and a little more variation would also be nice. But, at the same time, pieces such as "Human Nobility" and the Orzammar things accomplished both darkness and emotion perfectly for the races. You get this rare 15 second nuggets of goodness out of the soundtrack, and that for me kicks it up form "ok" to "good."

Also. Please...more battle them music. With all the fighting in the game there could be some alternating random encounter music.

I do like the dark fantasy version of I Am The One. Inon Zur is kind of hit or miss for me. I loved Fallout 3's theme, not so much FNV, and not a lot of DAO's music grabbed me.

ME2 had great music. Those Collectors, they have a catchy tune!

Fallout New Vegas actually uses most of its soundtrack from Fallout 1 and 2. The main menu song is new however.

Yeah I meant the main song.  FO3's opening theme gives me chills.  FNV, not so much.  The ambient music was better so I guess that is tribute to FO1 and 2.

I respectfully disagree, i like the opening theme in NV just as much as F3's.

YES!! I really love the Collector theme.  I think it's called "Collector Fever" on the recent soundtrack release that they just did.  I used to just pause the game or sit on the power wheel and just listen to it on repeat when that part of the game came up.  (I have the Xbox version for all my Bioware games.)  Now that I have the song on my ipod and can and will listen to that little jewel on repeat.

I also enjoyed the music during the Broodmother fight in DAO and wished that it had been included in the soundtrack release.

All dwarf related music, I loved. A lot. I do tend to agree, though, that on the whole, DA:O's music was not quite as memorable as it might've been.

Just got my pre-order Signature edition for 360, and the card says to sign in and enter code... You all know the drill, and it does come up and list the digital game soundtrack as being acquired, but where do I actually get it? Is it a download somewhere?

Wondering this myself, curious if a code will be e-mail so we can download it from a distrubutor or just something we download off BioWare site. Any concrete info in this?

To get your Soundtrack you have to go to your profile tab on the left. your registered game content. and then it should bring up all the DLC you have from the other games and DA 2. and under pc version of DA2 (cause you have to download mp3 on pc) there should be the soundtrack. Click more info and then there is a link inside it to download the MP3

Dear Bioware

Next time you do a "Buy the Signature Edition and get the Soundtrack Free" could you possibly do a deal for a free DL through iTunes or something? I'm having a heck of a time juggling the info for 29 .wav files. Currently all the information is set to blank.

I don't think Inon Zur will be happy about not being attributed for the work. That, and I'm slightly OC about labeling things.

If that's not possible, please at least make it possible to at least get the correct artwork without having to resort to pics of the DA2 site and judicious Photoshopping.

Just a thought.

I have noticed some of what you said as well but I need to ask: what do you mean with "weak cords"? And I think "The Deep Roads" was not so bad . But the rythm is disturbed, it is as if between each half of a second there is no sound. Which is something I noticed in his work on Crysis and Fallout 3 as well.
