There is this thing called a reaper that comes out from under the ground once every 1000 years and the champion is called upon to save the galaxy be fighting in an arena because he taken captured, but he was really a knight/warrior and must now reclaim the lands of the free marches.

SO far we do not know.

Only that He will be The champion of Kirkwall.

SO somewhere either at the start or down the road of the 10 years he becomes champion.

THe story is retelling it like as a bard would history.*they may change the original history and make it more exciting or something like that*

Those are the only clues.

No one can answer that right now but the DEV's so your gonna have to wait until more information about the game is released before getting the answer you are looking for.  My guess is your building your reputation up throughout the game with what you do, but ultimately you have to do something big in order to be declared the champion, however that is just an assumption I do not know for sure.

Yeah they haven't released anything about the plot aside from this title that is earned in Kirkwall at some point and the fact that Hawke flees from Lothering. Since he makes it to the Free Marches, and since the Blight got stopped in Ferelden in DA:O, I'm going to assume it's not darkspawn-driven, which, frankly, is fine with me.

I wouldn't mind a little bit of a slower pace so we can have motivations other than "The Mission." That's been the case for ME1, ME2, and DA:O already...would be nice to see something different.

And just for argument's sake, I don't think the "Champion of Kirkwall" thing is going to be the endgame goal. For one thing, they describe Hawke as being the Champion of Kirkwall, which suggests to me that it'll be very early on. For another thing, it's said that Hawke is supposed to "change the world forever." For some reason being Champion of one town doesn't seem quite that grandiose.

Because they are changing the narrative to be people in the future recalling the past (present in game) I kind of think it will just be the title he/she will be known by in the future.

I have a feeling the champion title will be eraned in the first two to four years, then some other events happens and then the last two years, it kinda like the climax. It is going to be very intresting.
