Hey everyone, sorry if this is in the wrong section of the board, but with the new Xbox being released in Nov sometime, and it coming with a brand new hard-drive (smaller, if I remember..), I'm wondering whether a transfer cable will move everything from my ME1/2 saves and allow importing my old characters as if I'd never had to change hard-drive.

Or, will I have to start from scratch? Will the transfer cable ensure *exact* copies of my playthroughs/saves are taken over to the new hard-drive, or does it do less? I've read somewhere on the internet of people arguing both sides - I'm hoping for a definite answer here.

Thanks for any replies!

When I did an upgrade from my 20 to 250 gig hard drive on my (old) xbox360 the saves transferred perfectly.

So I imagine that they should work just fine.

Mass Effect 2 is not reading my mass effect 1 saves even though they are on my hard drvie. I just upgraded to the new xbox and used an external hard drive to transfer the information from my old 20 gb to my new 250 gb. Anyone have any helpful hints?

I think that the save-file used by the importer is actually a hidden one. Maybe it did not get moved or copied with everything else. I would try redoing the very end of ME1 with the Shepard you want to import in ME2 on your new xbox. Hopefully this will create a new mission-accomplished file, and allow you to import.

Yep, the final save files are hidden. If you transfer using an external drive, like a flash drive, then you have to transfer something called "publisher data" or something like that. This is not regular save files listed under Mass Effect. This data cannot even be seen except during the transfer process of selecting what content you want to transfer. The Publisher data should have a name corresponding to one of your Shepards, so it should be easy to identify. Though it only seems like one file when you select it all your save data should be in that file. (The publisher data is located at the bottom of the list of games, videos, demos etc when you go to the transfer content selection screen.) To check that your transfer has gone well boot up ME2 and try to start a new career by importing data from ME1. Then choose your external drive as the source and see if you find your save files there. If not, something has gone wrong.

Unfortunately I cannot be more specific at this time because I don't have an Xbox at home right now.

If you use a transfer cable however, you copy everything on the hard drive, which also includes these hidden files.
