Thanks

When I beat it on normal, I was using this character, Human Rogue Archer, Morrigan, Wynne, and Alistair. Spread everyone out on the corners of the plateau, let Alistair tank, and kept the heals up. Ran around the dragon's legs when he was about to flame breath, and had Lifeward on Wynne. Eventually the dragon runs out of mana it seems, because it hopped around and simply clawed characters. At this point I AoSed it for 500, ran in with my dags, and got the KB so I could see the rad killscene with my main character. Will let you know how it goes on hard. =P

Well, I think it depends on builds. I can tell you my party, which brought it down in one try, though.
Morrigan as healer, Leliana as Archer, Warden rogue as archer and occasional backstabber when I could afford it, Shale and my Warden's Great Bear pet as tanks.
Morrigan, Leliana, and my Warden stayed out of reach firing shots while Shale and Bear pummeled it head it on and drew its attention. Morrigan healed when needed, and that's about all there was to it. The only tricky part comes from being able to heal Shale quickly enough, really.

Two ranged DPS, healer and a tank is pretty much all you need. Having anti-knockdown abilities for your tank helps as well as fire resistant gear. I'd avoid using melee DPS if you can, if you can't then I'd set your healers tactics to only focus heals on the tank and use your pots for the DPS instead.

I beat it one try also. My party was my main(duel wielding warrior) Sten with the dragonslaying sword, shale and morrigan. When the dragon was about half way dead, sten and shale were down and i basically had my main running around the dragon in circles staying out of his attacks while morrigan basically autoattacked it to death and healed me when needed. kinda cheap but worked for me lol

well mostly leliana is useless in combat for me. only around for lockpicks.. buth here she is great.
rapid fire or a other prefered special shot mode and keep shooting, great part of dps while melee stays out of range

Spread out! A friend of mine had the same issue. He kept the party on "follow the leader" mode and they all crowded towards the front of the the dragon. Have your tank in the front with follow off and position your healer to the side and have your damage guys on the sides as well. If your tank can keep the damage all on him, it's cake, except on Nightmare where the dragon can potentially one-hit crit your tank.

I used myself (dual wielding warrior), Leliana with a bow, Shale tanking with a 30% fire resist rock, and Wynn healing. Just went to town on it. Faced it away from my group, kept my Warden away from the tail and kept Heroic Defense up on Shale. Took a bit but no real problems.

This is the hardest fight for me so far.
As the others said, Spread out at the start!
I had Alistair tank it and my mage heal.
Also used the fire resist stuff before the fight for all characters.
Used a whole bunch of healing potions as well.
If the dragon lands close to a character, move the character away unless it's Alistair.
Make sure your healer has heals ready if the dragon chomps on Alistair, cause he will need heals then.
I had Leilana as archer, Morrigan as mage caster and Imoen(self) as healer.
Fun fight!!

Did this fight and on the second try I killed it.
Party composition:
1. Dalish Elf Rogue Archer (With master ranger bear)
2. Morrigain - Magic Damage Dealer
3. Allistair - Tank
4. Shale - Melee Damage Dealer
So no healer, but used about 10 lesser healing salves or so (first playthrough)

Fire resist stuff helps immensely. Shale is a good idea here because of the easy to get resistance. I had Alistar tanking myself, but it required me (support mage) and Wynne (healer) to keep him alive. Leliana sat back with that one bow mode (hailstorm or something) that puts a stacking attack debuff on the enemy. Shattering shot really helps Alistar damage too.
Another tip: Make sure you have plenty of bag space. That entire dungeon crawl was rape on my bags.
