One thing I've always loved about bioware games is the companions. For me, THEIR the main characters of the story, their the one's a cheer for, it's their stories and fates I truly care about. My player character is merely the tool in which their brought together, kind of the mirror I look through to watch their stories unfold.

Anyone else put more stock in the companions than the character in which you actually play?

Well, here's to hoping the depth of DA:2 characters are more similar to DA:O than ME2 (lotsa party banter for example.) ME2 had great characters, but didn't breath enough life into them.

Korgan, Oghren, Black Whirlwind, HK-47... and a man with a sexual love of hampsters from space! I love you all!

Me. I don't care about Hawke, Shepard or the Warden. They were just a way to get me to meet the awesome people in their worlds and the story.

I certanly agree with you. On all counts.

Well, actually I guess I do care about Shepard, The Warden and Hawke, or at least about how I choose to define them through the choices I make but I will definitly be looking forward to information on the companions more.

Yeah I loved the party members as well, each with diffrent personalitys and storys.

I don't mind the fact my hero is preset as long as they keep you partys interesting.

Yes, I do. Dragon Age: Origins, especially, was a game designed to be played multiple times in different ways from various viewpoints. For that reason, while I do have some attachment, I did not get that attached to the main Warden character, since he is in many ways a placeholder, a general Warden Hero who could be from any background representing generically the archetype of the Grey Warden hero who stops the Blight.

On the other hand, the companions are there in every playthrough, so they have more resonance to me.

Lol! I know man!

Are all those shadows on the official page outlines of companions?

The companions are the most important part of the game, because they defy the hero. With them on your team they help show the depth of your character and what kind of people your character prefers giving us a way of showing us who this person is.

Its possible... Although that'd mean we'd have about 19 companions.

19 would mean that there either is many one or the other, or that the game is very long.

Well, that or that they won't be very deep.

Do you mean define?

Cause if so, very good point, and I fully agree. I never really thought of it like that, but your spot on.

I definitely don't want that many. It would be hard to develop them all.

I think its likely that some are companions and the rest are simply other major characters.

19 would be far too many.

Well said! The companions are what makes Bioware games great. We as a community seem to have gotten ourselves into such a hissy fit over a preset last name/ race that we've forgotten that.

I care about my characters in Origins, because I made them and when playing, *lived* them and saw the world and the companions through their eyes. The way I saw companions depended heavily on what kind of character I was playing. So I don't see them in seclusion.

Shepard, I do not care about at all. I do not know about Hawke yet, we'll have to wait and see.
A thrid person narative doesn't mean I do not care about the main character however. For instance, I like Sam Fisher, Altair and Ezio.

Honestly I hope we got a good deal of non-human companions. Being we can only PLAY human, we'll need more then one elf/dwarf companion available to represent our favorite races!

Although honestly I like the idea of only 1 qunari companion in DA2... I like the mystery and almost alien feel the race has. Having like 3 of them in your party would take away from that I feel.

I am half and half. I love most of Biowares companions, through every game i have played of theirs (From origional Baldurs Gate onwards) I have appreciated the personalities the writers and VO have created to help get me emotionally involved in the story, although I do reserve hate for a few that I've always loathed. I also enjoy having an epic main charecter that is my own but more importantly I love the interactions between PC and party.

Seriously, it's one thing to have great party members but when my PC has no grain of my own creativity or influence I find it very difficult to get interested in their interaction with their companions.

Baldurs Gate did it the best way IMO (Mass Effect and Dragon Age came damn close but Alistair needs to die horribly in a fire and I have nothing but my eternal nerdhate for Ashley and Kaiden) and with it now going on 10 years of me playing through BG again and again I can honestly say I enjoy every time i hear Jaheira's sultry tone, Minsc's "Jump on my sword villainy, I wont be so gentle!" and stranegly Sarevoks redemption storyline. BG is a fine example of how a PC and Party should work.

The way I see it, having one more than the other isnt any good, you need to be involved in your charecter to enjoy the depth of interaction with his/her travelling companions.

If you didnt have that, you might as well just be playing God Of War IMHO.

The game IS the players character, companions are just pieces that help move the game along. The story, the game play, the major decisions, everything is centered around your character. So no, I care far less about companions then I do the main protagonist which is your character.

Having a Tal'Vashoth would be a nice offset to Sten.

I didn't care about the Warden nearly as much as I cared for my Bhaalspawn in BG2... I'm not sure why. I did care for Shepard. I'm optimistic about Hawke, it already seems like he/she's a bit larger than life.

When I first read the thread title, it read as "Who here care more about COMPANIES than their games".

See my problem is... if I try to get behind the main character two things happen...

A. I select the very stereotypical responses. Good guy or bad guy. It creates a constant personality and set of responses, but it makes for a shallow character that just doesn't hold a torch to the depth (or humor) of many other bioware companions. For example, If I'm playing a goody-toe shoes paladin, I select all the corny honorble boy scout responses. And sense most bioware dialog trees have one or two responses like this, I get a constant personality and "voice." But I just can't care about such a flat character.

B. I create a more realistic character in my mind and imagine. One of depth, one I can get behind and cheer for. Only with a limited of set responses, it's very hard to find a consistent "voice" for my main character. For example, I want my dwarf rogue to be a cold hearted jerk on the outside, but really have a heart of gold on the inside.  Not all dialog trees will mesh with this... I will not always have the right response. Thus my character doesn't feel like a solid character... and I can't care about them.
