A big thanks to all contributors to this thread, particularly to Scorus “the collator”.

It’s good to finally see some philanthropy in these forums. My disillusionment was getting
the better of me after reading so many petty, vindictive, ill-informed, and overall,
negative posts.

The advice here is informing for the inexperienced, and reaffirming for the “well traveled”.

Well done to all concerned, and I support all attempts at “stickiness”.

Thanks for this great post!

A sticky would be great for it ... took me 20 minutes to find it on page 9, though the last post was only 10 hours ago

The OP should be removed and replaced with "DUH". Christ, this stuff should be obvious. If you've ever played wow or any tactical rpg you'd know to do all this stuff already.

Since people started expressing concerns about difficulty again, I take the liberty of bumping this up.

Adding a general tip for first timers. Once you get your base camp, sell anything you're not sure about to the vendor there. I did a lot of running around to find things I'd previously sold - especially gifts that were "unwanted" at the time - so having them in one place is useful.

Man, this needs to be stickied or something, so we don't see the same threads popping up time and time again. Or, we can just keep bumping it 8D

Great thread--glad to see some of my tactics confirmed and to learn other ones I hadn't thought of.

Great thread, thanks for posting this. I put a lot of my tips into this post, a lot (if not all) of these have already been mentioned, but, just adding my 2 cents...  besides, it's buried somewhere in the depths of the gameplay forum and you'll never find it except by accident.

Good stuff. This game seems more difficult than BG as it seems like the enemies have more HP. It's manageable though if you take your time. Rushing in is the leading cause of death for me. I cautiously don't rush a mobs unless I have a 4:3 advantage at even con.

Kiting the bosses can help. Defeated both the ogre and the revenant (@ Redcliffe) that way eventually. Take a character, grab agg, and just start running around in circles while the guy gives chase. Then have the rest of your party use spells and missile weapons to whittle him down. Revenant was kind of a bastard with his pull, but if you take time to spread back out again it's do-able. Exchange kiters when necessary. Save up for a damage spike and unleash it when he's low on health. You won't win points for speed or style, but it does work.

So basically these "tactics" boil down to: Save/Pause/Make Pots/Heal before every battle. The OP forgot to put "don't breath with your mouth", I think.

Bumpity bump bump. Thank the Maker. And the Collator, and the Advice Givers, and well, you get the idea. Great collection of tips.

I'm loving this game but am pretty new to this kind of RPG (Fallout 3 and Oblivion IV seem like a cakewalk in comparison.) My first big battle ended in much shame. Repeatedly.

I'm done with three treaty quests and a handful of side quests as an Elvin Mage and I'm still flipping between normal and easy and downing Lyrium and casting health spells like no tomorrow. With this at my side, I will once again tackle Normal only.

For those new to this type of game, I would respectfully add that some of the battles really do give you a schooling in battle tactics and strategy--the Ogre in the beginning, the entire Circle treaty quest, and the Denerim back ally fights come to mind. There is much to learn from these battles. Strategy and some planning are well rewarded.

A decent stock of Lyrium and health poultices and maybe even a Mage with some decent healing powers also helps. (I've got to start working on crafting my own potions.)

i play on the console, and one thing to remember, is when in your "pause" screen that brings up your abilities, potions, etc you can scroll through the different characters holding down the button, and then tabbing the bumpers to scroll through characters, so that way you can assign individual tasks at the same time, like drink potion, cast this spell, use this ability, etc.

also you on the xbox, there is no auto save key, so be sure to save often, as i learned the hard way when i got lazy(like i do in every game i play >.<) remind yourself to save, because redo-ing fights sucks.

also, you should save before doing any major conversations, or conversations that could have differnt outcomes. accidently hit the wrong response? decided you do actually want to kill them cause its not worth it? just reload your save and have at it. also this way you can always go back and see how the story would play out if you did something different.

I'm adding strategies and tips as they come! :) Keep it up!

Hi just want to thank you and all the positive contributors for this...  I am in my first playthrough.. just a casual player and playing on casual (xbox)...  I always do this with new games to get the strategy down before I go to more difficult levels..  maybe now I can go to normal.  Posted Image

I don't understand the need for backpacks once you have the camp chest (that's a free download). I see no reason to have tons of stuff with me all the time. If it's not equipped, I either sell it (which is most of the time) or if it's something I think I might like to try later in the game I keep it at camp. This will save me all the gold of buying unnecessary backpacks.

Zergy's Dragon Slaying Guide:

-First of all, make sure your tank is the only one standing in front of the dragon; dragon breath and wing buffet can be a huge pain if your party is in front of it.

-Don't put the rest of your party behind the dragon; they really like to slap people around with their tail.

-Spread out your party; if the dragon ever decides to turn around and spit a fireball at you, you'll be happy you did.

-Try to have your healer keep a heal ready in case the dragon grabs your tank in its mouth, can't use potions while in there.

-Make sure you have enough of potions to last the whole fight, dragons can take a while to take down.

-Once you kill the dragon zoom in to the character doing the finishing move, enjoy the show and take a screenshot! Posted Image

How do you position your npc's if your are playing on the xbox?
