I've been experiencing crashes/freezes every so often on ME1, where my monitors go to black and/or with vertical gray or dark lines and a loud buzzing noise from the speakers (only way to fix was a hard reboot). Might happen as often as once an hour or as little as once a week. But it was still completely playable.
Just started playing ME2, and now I get this same crash at Freedom's Progress at the same time every time. Right when the first main doors open and 2 mechs appear, the game will crash. Might be able to kill them first sometimes, but it's usually within 30-60 seconds of opening those doors. I can run around for 10 minutes prior to open those doors, but once I do, boom, crash. I've installed new drivers for the video card (ATI 4850), new sound drivers (MB), , patched to 1.2 and reduced settings. Running Win7 x64. Also tried loading an older save from the previous level (Cerebus base).
The game is completely unplayable now. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Was able to get by that specific area. Tried reinstalling video drivers and reducing all effects levels and resolution, and running in window. Made it past the large mech, saved, and then it crashed again.
Biggest pain in the butt is that it hard crashes, so only a hard reboot works. Then I have to wait for Windows to restart (and it asks if you want to start Win normally, and I have to wait for the 30 sec count down because it's not recognizing my wireless keyboard for some reason). For every crash, takes about 5 minutes to get the game back up

You guys on the steam version or retail?
If you're usiing a steam version try right clicking the game icon and going into properties ,then hit the local files tab and verify game cache.

Well, got past that area and have only had 1 crash in the last 2 hrs of gameplay. I returned all my video settings to the default and returned my resolution back to normal too. Only thing that I've left it to make the EXE run as an admin. Not sure what is actually helping.
I think Mass Effect (both 1 and 2) have sections of the game that are crash prone and once you are past it, the crashes lessen. I have a lot of crashes in certain parts of ME1, but the last 1/2 of the game, I think I had none.
Thanks all for the help.

It's possible you're simply crash prone. I've had some crashes with ME1 myself, though nothing so bad as what you're describing.
As to the hard crashing, I would guess that's an issue with your system. Drivers, perhaps - I had a similar problem, of crashes resulting in BSoDs, until I uninstalled the vendor's additional video card drivers and stuck to the ATI Catalysts only.

It's possible, but the only 2 games where I've had these crashes are ME1 and ME2. COD6 and other games run without crashing. Oh well... at least I can play again.

I have this exact same problem, though not with ME1, in fact with any game i own. My problems even bigger, because i crash so often at freedom;s progress, i can;t get by it AT ALL.
I'm posting a new thread in the hope some more people (bioware?) will help.

Same exact problem here, with
Corei7 965
6 Gb ddr3
Asus P6t
Ati Radeon 5870
W7 64bit
The pc doesn't freeze, it's just the game that crashes and I go back to desktop.
I have the Steam version.
EDIT: I have solved the problem by rebuilding the game's cache.

Run as administrator and all video settings to predeterminate was the solution in my case
