Still hate the new darkspawn deisgns.

Too much ****ing angular ****. It looks dumb.

No reason to abandon a perfectly awesome armoured ogre design:

I agree, who in their right mind thought that those enormous, ridiculous jutting angles and pyramidal spikes coming off of everything were a good idea?!?! WTF??

Agreed. I much prefer the old armor design.

Well, the texture detail is up a bit, but it still looks dated compared to ME2. Half-Life 2's graphics look better than that.

I hope the people who say this is pre-alpha are right.

The Darkspawn look like they have lost their grit and malice, I don't know but they just do not look near as menacing as they did in Origins.

Well now that I can actually see them I do have to admit that the improvement over DA:O is minimal at best. The ogre looks like he has downs syndrome, and the pointy armor is a little over the top. The environment still looks as bland as the first one, though I guess you can't really expect every little bit of scenery to be dazzling.

Hawke looks okay, though, and it might look a whole lot better with some proper lighting and tweaks. I'll hold on to hopes that the final product will look improved.

Might have to do with a new area.

Yet there you go assuming these pictures were taking the other day and not many many months in the past.

If it wasn't, then it was silly to put them out, it makes the game look bad.

Wasn't that when they were still focusing on developing the engine? If you are going by that, then isn't 2004-2009 a pretty long time to get the graphics to what we have now for Dragon Age?

Bioware, I have defended DA2 a lot over the past few days, but these shots look TERRIBLE. Seriously, really bad. It just doesn't fit the world at all style wise, and on a technical level they look Wii-level.

Seriously, change this.

it's in alpha can't you tell by the non existent shadows, and by how bad the background is textured?

Scratch that, there are shadows.

If its the only pictures they have, they might as well put them out. How do you know they're even ready to show the beta?

What does it matter WHEN the images were taken? The fact that Bioware was content letting ANYONE see them, let alone be featured in the first magazine article announcing the game is a GIANT RED FLAG

Not really. Unless you've never been a part of the hype game before.

I'm sure the graphics will improve before the release. I just hope they don't try to use the "style vs. technical" excuse for why they are not as good as the first game.

Hmm... art style makes it akin to Fallout 3/New Vegas.

We never really had a desert landscape in DA:O, everything was lush and green except in Redcliffe or down in the Deep Roads.

I just hope that the whole area doesn't seem as dreary as the Free Marches seem to be.

Sorry, distracted by TV.
One question for everyone screaming and yelling about how the game comes out in 9 months so nobody can compare these shots to early shots from DAO or ME2 and that these are so totally going to be the exact same graphics as the release...
Where's the time stamp on the screens?
Because you guys are all working under the impression that the shots were taken like... yesterday.
For all we know they were taken in January when there was a year+ left to work.
And yes Estel i do think it's possible the screens were taken off a crappy PC. I think it's more possible the screens were taken running on a low graphics setting to keep the system load down for testing.
As everyone loves to point out, the game is 9 months away (or more) and the official trailer doesn't come out for another month.
These are teasers nothing more. They're not intended to tell us everything just get us talking and build suspense. Which they have done.

Screenshots are an important part of marketing, especially during a reveal where you want to make the best first impression possible. No company in their right mind would cut sub-par screens from a low end test rig for a reveal. This is the best Bioware had to offer at the time the Game Informer magazine went to print.

I'm sure we'll see some improvement before release, but with only 8 months left it seems unlikely the changes will be dramatic.

Exactly.  It isn't that most of the negative posters hate DA2 with a passion.  Most, like me, are simply wondering why they would elect to have these be the first screenshots of the game when it is tentatively scheduled to be released within 9 months.... The "these are just old screens" argument is silly, nobody working in marketing would show the oldest and most unrefined aspects of their product as part of its flagship publicitty

My message is that the first screenshots released for a game don't necessarily represent the full extent of the graphics in the released version.

Aww, but you're forgetting or just don't know about the tactic of releasing alpha build screens.

After these are released and some time has passed, they show Beta screens, which are MUCH better, and after those come screens of what we're actually going to get.

People get hyped just seeing things improve.

Same here and I have been advising others to be wary of what appears to be overly negative feelings on DA2. I think the hero looks excellent and perhaps even an improvement but the others... no.

Unless this was a marketing tactic to show improvement as time goes on.

Come on folks, hasn't anyone else paid attention to the development of other video games?

Wow, big change. That said, this was years ago while DA2 is scheduled to be released in under a year. I would really like to see the graphics improve overall (some looked great but others did not) especially given how excellent ME2 looks.
