These aren't alpha, pre-alpha or whatever else you want to call them. The game is 7 months from release, you don't release screenshots from an alpha version of the game that early on, or else the marketting guys shouldn't be getting paid.

This looks... absolutely horrendous. Who the hell in their art department decided that giving everything jagged corners and using N64 textures was a great art style? Between this and the other announcements about the game, it is looking like The Witcher 2 will be the only CRPG worth getting for the next few years.

I don't see why so many people are complaining. It may not look awesome but, like many others have said: It's in pre-alpha.
Hawke's textures look really good.

Has Hawke landed on the Planet of the Apes?  The Ogre looks like he has some skin condition other than au de taint.

Good God, people! Enough with this Alpha, Pre-Alpha, Beta-Alpha thing. So far there was NO confirmation that this is an Alpha build. And it really shouldn't - 7 months till release, you don't show your early development stage stuff for promotion of your product that late.

Yo, ChuckNorris (LOLOLOLOL!). Thanks for the contrib but no. Just no.

No.

A game barely more than a half-year off from release is not in "pre-alpha."

My only complaint is that the Darkspawn looked a bit un-tainted, they look to clean, but that may change.

I'm not bothered about it looked jaggy myself, sometimes screenshots don't fairly represent the game in action.

I think the worst part about it, beyond much of this thread being all but an insult to the developers through less than civil criticism of their work, is that it'll likely be a painfully long while before we're likely to see any other in-game assets to either quell or confirm many of our fears and concerns.

Even the trailer teased for next month is likely to be little more than the prerendered teasers we'd seen for its predecessor. This is what'll be mulling over for months without so much as a screenshot or short animation to help us think otherwise.

Can't say it's unexpected though, half the people were whinging over a few lines of description on the game, I'm not surprised to find people complaining about the screenshots to be honest.

As I recall, the reaction was much the same to the first looks at Origins. Nothing like a couple of early screenshots for fans to rip apart examine. Image IPB

The comments are appreciated, folks, both good and bad. Hopefully there will be more for you to look at soon.

You have a point, and I'll readily admit that for my part I have been decidedly less than civil and polite in my criticism of the art/design direction this game seems to be taking.

But here's the thing:  The first Dragon Age was an old-school, no-joke, pause every 5 seconds strategic RPG that was simultaneously launched on PC, 360 and PS3.  Any other publisher like Activision would have never had the balls to green light such a preposterous idea.

But it launched to enormous critical AND economic success!! It sold like gangbusters and everyone loved it!  After seeing that there really is a market for a deep, old school RPG, who would be so obtuse to think you needed to go back and start changing things that absolutely NO ONE had a problem with in the first place?!? Sure DA:O wasn't perfect, and could have used some tweaking here and there, but so far NOTHING that Bioware has bragged about changing has anything to do with the faults of the original game.

The devs seem so tone deaf it becomes infuriating.  They really seem to have no clue what it is that makes their games so great, and they respond to criticism by either making things worse, removing features altogether or changing things totally unrelated to the failings of the original.

I don't really care about the texture thing so far, but my question is why are there still darkspawn? If there's no Blight, and you've dealt with the Awakening plot (spoiler's sake), why are there still darkspawns? Are they going to be an integral part of the game, or what's up?

Yes, but even if BioWare got around to enhancing the textures, etc. there's still the problem with the awful armor and darkspawn designs (wich is something you normally probably don't fix with seven months left to release).

I've seen some VERY old apparentely screenshots of Dragon Age in early development in Sorcerer's Place... they looked... well, polearms... bearded guys and a desert climate... wait, you aren't saying that DA2 is actually what was DA1 supposed to be 6 years ago, right?

This.  I like the concept art so far and much of the screenshots.....I'm just completely underwhelmed by the art design of the darkspawn.

Going to spend most of my morning sifting through this with nostalgia-tinted glasses.

And, hey, some of us like myself were waiting half a decade for DA:O without knowing what to expect until finally seeing that there was nothing to worrk about. I'm sure I can make it to March.

DA Journeys had better graphics. Looks like N64. Please Bioware don't FI–Ick this game. Return to old art direction.
