Do you mean the screenshots for pre-rendered graphics in the NWN engine, or the ones done in DA own engine?

The ones done in DA's own engine.

Because if it's the former then the game dropped that style completely few years down the road, and if it's the latter then it's perhaps worth noting the style didn't really change much from these early screenshots and the final game got examined ripped apart for its visual quality just the same...

Maybe, but in terms of the lighting and polish there was a significant amount of difference. It's probably more telling, however, that the people who ripped apart those first Origins screenshots were the same people here-- who were generally fine with Origins as it ended up looking.

Incidentally, could you comment on the brightness of those screenshots? I mean, they look like the gamma level is way above normal on them (even things which should be in shadows are very bright and there's very little contrast overall)  i'm just curious if this is accident when saving the images for the web sites to use, or is this part of the new "graphics style"?

I'm not really one to comment on the art. All I can really say is that the game already looks better than it does in those screenshots-- there's a lot of work being done on all content, and while I get what people are saying regarding the number of months left you have to consider that we're not dealing with a long development cycle here. Instead of thinking months, think "percentage until complete". It's still pretty early, as far as we're concerned. Hopefully you'll like what we show you in the months to come. From my perspective, I think what I'm playing looks quite striking.

Where did the "Super Hot" comment come from? In what way could you consider any of this "Super Hot", especially in this generation?

[stuff about the graphics]

Good info, thanks.

I was wondering, can you comment at all on the modeling and animation? The face models were beautiful in DA:O, but the body models much less so. Are there going to be individualized NPC/Companion models, or will it be the same "stock body" used throughout with different heads as appropriate? Are there going to be any upgrades to the animations from DA:o to DA][? Have you all tried out any motion capture for animation?

I'm going to wait till the first footage before I make a judgment. I like the way Hawke looks cool though, the monsters don't look intimidating though.

Ahh, this is good to hear. It's then bit odd a better looking screens weren't released instead but i'll chalk it to the approval process they're getting through or something like that? And well, it's not really that important then as long as there is improvements. Hope that "debut trailer" thing will be able to create a better impression and show more.

Well, just look at what that Ogre is wearing ;) That's hot If you're into such thing...

Seriously speaking, details on Hawke (assuming that's him) look nice enough (especially if the camera works as in Origins), but the darkspawn look a bit too ...clean. Not like the slimy-looking monstrosities as seen in the Ostagar battle video in Origins. The environment textures are defintely WIP, i've seen sharper textures in Warcraft 3. But these are inly the first screenshots, i've no doubt it'll get better looking.

seems like your art department is way behind or lacking people if the marketing guys have to publish those screens to build up some hype. hopefully there are more and better screens printed within the game informer or it will become a disaster - the first impression is still the most important one.

Yup, the file even has "v2" as part of the name, too Posted Image

edit: the other screen was replaced with a "v2" one too.

And what a difference a little brightness/contrast adjustment made.

While hunting down the info for my last post (page 22 very bottom READ IT) I've gotten the impression that early-stage shots are getting popular as a marketing tool to show off the changes that come with each stage of the development cycle.
For an industry that has developed such an insider following, with people not only interested in the games themselves but the process involved in making it, it's not a bad idea. Of course it helps to actually say what stage of development they're from... but still.

So instead of trying to argue that these are alpha stage I will instead ask:
If these are alpha stage would people still be so angry?

I dislike the new Darkspawn models. They look ridiculous.

Oh my god, everyone's saying it looks like crap, quick! Make it darker!

Shading my ass, it looks like they just punched up the contrast.

Interesting screen shots! Dragon Age 2 is going to be on the Nintendo Wii?

I would still be pretty mad because of the stylization they've chosen to go with.  I have never, ever seen good stylized visuals in a videogame.  I think they look cartoony and crap.

The graphics so far look fine to me, be interested in seeing the finished product. With future images could we maybe get a glimpse of one possible look of the female Hawke instead of just the male?

Looking at that second picture made me think of He-Man for some reason.

The main problem, at least as far as I'm concerned, is not lighting, shader effects or whatnot, these thinks might still get tweaked, but design, and that most likely won't differ much if at all from what can be seen in those two pics. We'll have to get used to those huge pyramid thingies and spikes sticking out all over the place and that mister Oger clumsy face, unfortunately.

I agree

low-poly models, low-res textures and cartoonish art. No dynamic lightining or HDR or antialiasing can fix that.

The armor looks silly, but I like the look of the ogre's skin and face. It looks more like a corrupted and diseased human than another orc.

To paraphrase:

Darth Gaider wrote...

"Computers may be twice as fast as they were in 1973 but the average gamer is as drunk and stupid as ever. The one that's changed is me! Let's face it, I've become bitter, even crazy over the years, and once DA][ is swept into the market I'll sell our children's organs to zoos for meat, and I'll go into people's houses at night and wreck up the place! Woo hoo hoo hoo hahahahahahahaha!"

(note: this is intended to be a humorous misquote, and hopefully a lot of folks will get the reference)

How do you know how the design is? This is the 1st screenshot, I would wait for more screenshots of monsters before we can comment on the direction of design.
