Keep in mind that these are the first screens we're actually seeing. Looking back at DAO's first screens and the end results leave me optimistic for how the game will eventually look upon release.

Don't hold your hope up, the game is coming out in in like 9 months, it won't look much different upon release. As far as i remember we got first peek at DAO years before the game finally came out, it didn't even run on the same graphic engine back then.

A fair comparison would be screenshots from summer 2008. I don't remember if there were any then.

Well, these are the oldest ones IGN has of Dragon Age: origins.

Oh wow what a difrance we have

That's because they changed graphic engines completely...I believe.

Hawke looked good in those screenshots. The darkspawn close up wasn't bad. The environment and armour on the darkspawn though? Not great. Not that our current darkspawn didn't also look stupid and terrible, so for what it's worth I don't think this is a step up or down.

Might be a few more stepping sideways untill we have more polished screenshots revealed :)

The darkspawn armour is the problem. It's so angular that it looks like a throwback to the old barely 3D games. If you look at the character models the detail is great, the issue is that the darkspawn armour just makes it look hilariously bad.

Also, what the hell is up with the ground? It doesn't quite look they're on a planet like ours.

Neh, gameplaytrailer is very unlikely. As I see it, they launch first a teaser (if this is a sequel) to reactivate people who played previous game but dont hang out on the forum. Then they launch a CGI trailer or something to get attention of new gamers (because seriously it not that often when gameplay get attention of people), this been with almost every game I can think of. And already when the hype about the game is high they will release some gameplay to finish off the crowd.

At best we can hope that it will be a mix of 90% CGI and 10% gameplay or something.

This is my problem, as well. The character models look decent, but the armor is so low-poly and pointy that it looks as if they took the "Spikes of Villainy" trope to a ridiculously retarded level. If you are going to try to make characters look "intimidating" or "villainous" by giving them spiky armor, at least make it look like you didn't just pull assets straight out of an original Xbox or PS2 game.

Then again, I also hate the character design. Hawke is a bit too "macho" (but wouldn't deter me from buying) and the Derpspawn look absolutely terrible. I have no idea how their artists figured that making the main enemies even more generic (not to mention just plain stupid-looking) would somehow solve the problem that this game is mind-numbingly generic fantasy

Also, what the hell is up with the ground? It doesn't quite look they're on a planet like ours.

It turns out that Dragon Age II actually occurs on the moon, and Hawke is battling the dreaded Moonspawn.

Should imagine you could change the look of Hawke so he doesnt look so macho :)
