Uh, seeing as Hawke isn't going to be a Grey Warden and therefore not immune to the taint, wouldn't that mean that s/he'd just get Blight sickness from a Darkspawn companion and die? Cause while that'd be an interesting ending, I'm not sure how satisfying it would be.

Meh. Only Alistair and the PC were wardens in the first game and none of the others got sick.

What would your darkspawn companion gifts be? Body parts?

Well, so far we know that darkspawn like totems, tattoos, meat and weapons. Well, I can think of some interesting presents.

As for the taint, in Awakening we're told that Architect found a way to control the taint so they could keep a qunari merchant in their headquaters and protect him from their taint. I suppose this can be used by darkspawn companion.

Heh, imagine an optional personal quest for such companion, where he tells you that he want to become a Father and need your help to snatch a woman and make her a broodmother. And in exchange he promises that his children will serve Hawke's cause (in final battle you'll have darkspawn troops available).
Now I want such companion too. So we snatch a qunari woman, so children will be big, horny and absolutely deadly in battle, maybe a bit stupid though.

Your army awaits...Posted ImagePosted Image

I'm on the "sort of want" side of this discussion.

It's true, former enemies becoming companions is a bit cliche, but if done right it could be something more. As for the dangers of the taint, that's what we got the Architect for, right? Who knows, maybe he developed something that stops the spread of the taint. The darkspawn blood may still contain it if spilled, but you won't get sick if let's say, a darkspawn sneezes in your presence.

I'd personally love to see a darkspawn companion that would eventually fall for female Hawke, yet because of who he is, Darky knows his feelings may be onesided. It would be fun to see his half-assed attempts on romance. But that's just me ranting.

having a darkspawn companion could not work

it turned out that legion was actually on the side of shepard

i doubt they could suddenly decide that there is a splinter group of darkspawn who afre good and like people

the architect is not a good guy, he is just not the main bad guy of awakening. he has the aim of turning people into darkspawn, and so does everyone serving him

Well, turning ALL people into darkspawn is a very hard task. So I can see why some darkspawn may want to ally with Hawke and make him the ruler of Ferelden, and later on they will form an alliance and assault Oralis (Ferelden army + darkspawn army = Oralis screwed), half of Oralis will be given to darkspawn, and half will become a part of Ferelden.

It's like... You don't attack police in the open. You bribe some policemen and then you work together until you get full control of the city. And then you go for each others throats...

And, and I want my army of ogres! They'll have silverite armor and spiked mauls to crush orlesians into a fine paste!

Although the Architect's methods may have been "extreme", he was a believer in the ends justify the means. As to darkspawn being good, well the epilogue at the end of Awakening explains how the messenger has become a wandering hero, but at the cost of causing isolated cases of the taint, which is why a subplot in which you must seek out the Architect or his research if he's dead, to resolve this problem. It would definitley be an interesting quest and may connect some of Awakening to DA2, and solve some unanswered questions.

Games4ever, combat shotgun is your best friend in Fallout 3 when murlocks go for a crotch pinch. That said, there are no combat shotguns in Dragon Age, so I've got to agree.

Hell, combat shotgun is always your friend. Right beside the Fat Man and your Alien Blaster.

While a darkspawn companion might be neat... it would be a tad odd and cliche. Just a bit and all.

Seriously, the Mirelurks scared the crap out of me. I sure hope we won't see any of those in "Fallout: New Vegas"... Posted Image

Thats a bit of an oxymoron, in my opinion.

Even though I really like the darkspawn and the awakened darkspawn, I wouldn't want one as a companion. I would probably want an Awakened Darkspawn that I run into every once and awhile that helps me out with something and blah blah blah.

Well, they're tainted and might drag a female PC/companions off to be brood mothers, so.... No, it wouldn't happen in my game. I kills 'em dead. ;)

I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of a darkspawn ally but, It'll be too unlikely. You have to consider the time lines. Darkspawn are seen as the face of all things vile, they're going to be seen as nothing more than violent, parasitic vermin.  It's realy unfortunate.:crying:

Aren't Mirelurks East Coast only?

On the other hand, Nightkins return to New Vegas...

Hawke is from Lothering. Lothering gets pretty much wiped from the face of Thedas by the Darkspawn. Hawke flees Lothering accordingly. Why on earth would he/she allow a Darkspawn to travel with them? No matter how redeemed a Darkspawn is, thats a helluva hatred there to get over.

Well If I lived in Lothering and someone destroyed it, I'd give 'em a pat on the back. Lothering was a dump.

Exactly this. Also it was not Darkspawn, but their local Bann Teabag, who abandoned the village to it's doom.

Well other than to two issues that you've told me I can't comment on. The darkspawn in general don't make for interesting characters and would inevitably become 'filler' companions like Dog. Their personal  history is reasonably dull and they generally have little room for maneuver when it comes to character progression not to mention a lack of interesting hooks into the world and civilization as a whole. It would feel like a hackneyed move on Bioware's part just to throw out a 'different' companion.

Also we can explore the creation of the Darkspawn and their relationship with the Old Gods in different less forced ways than with a companion.

Well, it never had to be a darkspawn with a noble goal. For those of you who've played FO3, it can just be a temporary alliance to accomplish a common goal, i.e. if you side with the Desmond the ghoul at the Calvert Mansion in Point Lookout. Desmond gets to see Professor Calvert destroyed and you get to loot whatever is of value there.

Presumably if you have a darkspawn ally, any antagonist in the game (not necessarily the main evil in the game) may also be an enemy of said companion. Their allegiance to you is only secured by agreeing to help defeat said enemy in the process, or at least getting them along to a point where they can more easily take on the task alone.

Of course it may not necessarily have to be a common enemy. If your journey is taking you to any sites of arcane power (ruins etc) and your companion is seeking something there (an artifact, power), they may agree to accompany you.

Anybody remember Ya Zhen from Jade Empire? He was absolutely evil, power mad demon who hated humans and wanted them exterminated. And yet he served PC because one day it would yield him personal profit - freedom, power and a real body to wreck havoc and slaughter the innocents.

Ah, I loved this demon. The problem in Origins is that none of your companions is truly evil. Ya Zhen was absolutely evil, cruel, power-map maniac, I really love when RPG allows you to have such a companion.
