Everyone should love varathorn when he is not being picky. His value to the party is emmense, especially for not even being a party member. I recently ragequit the game because i was unawhare that varathorn would stop selling to you, so i made a new character and decided to test when exactly varathorn will hate you and what you have to do to make it so, also i tested what will bring him back from this hatefull spite.

Intresting NOTE: if you cause hate within the clan before you talk to varathorn, when you do talk to him and meet him his first words to you will be telling you he is only speaking with you because the keeper demands it. You will then have a unique dialog option asking him why he is being so hostile. In so many words he will say because you have mistreated the clan.
If you get this introduction this is bad. From here the only way to cure his rage is to save his entire clan, which wont be hard if this is your first stop and you still have your initial horde of potions. But if you ventured here a little late and were looking for somewhere to restock this can be a gamebreaker. The forest has many dangerous enemies and in order to complete the quest to regain the store you have to go through not only the forest but a dungeon as well. It will be frusterating for most doing this without potions as it is not a particularly short quest.

Basically if you are playing an evil character i suggest you do not even talk or interact with most of the camp until you are ready to do nature of the beast.

Varathorns hate stems from many things, but a huge part will come from if you either fail at stealing (even once) or split up cammen and ghena.

There are many miniscule factors though, just being rude effects the clan. Causing any mischeif, even if it is not inherently your fault. Such as successfuling lying about the halla. Though you lied the rest of the clan will thank you for your help. Even though they will thank you it still effects varathorn in a (albeit small) negative way.

If you are playing a character who hates elves then join the club. I usually play that guy as well, the elves problem of the curse usually ends with all of them dying in my game.
If you are on PC this is no problem, as there are mods that add elfroot into the dwarven merchants stock (which would be more realistic actually sense he is constantly traveling around whereas verathorn is apparently farming the same stock of elfroot to all hell). 
If you are on console as i am then the cure to this is doing as i stated above.

You can be as hostile to the "welcomming" comittee as you want so no worries of that affecting varathorn, he is only affected by what you do when you are let loose into the camp. What you say to the initial few elves and the keeper make no difference.

So if you plan to wipe out the silly elves then wait until your done with everything else so you have that supply there.

It should also be noted that lesser pultices are far cheaper and more reasonable to make. Making some greater or regular from time to time is fine but your bulk should be lesser.

If anyone else has any information regarding varathorns hate meater or tips, please let me know.

If you sleep with either gheyna or cammen and then talk to lanaya, varathorn won't sell to you anymore. If you sleep with either of them but don't talk to lanaya, you still can barter with varathorn. If varathorn is hostile, then you can only get one item from rare ironbark, even if you succeed the persuade check (didn't need the bow as I had far song) and if you take any items from the chests in camp, varathorn won't barter with you (I learned that the hard way, even though this never happened before, which was cured by a decapitation with some werewolf help )
