I said that MOST people ONLY need to get a video card in order to turn their machines into a gaming rig. As long as you have a semi modern PC (about 4 years old or newer) that's probably all you need to do.

Which is what exactly? You whining that your console version will take into account the limitations of the consoles?
By all means, continue.

I'm not saying the following is true of you, but I've noticed a trend of people buying laptops for 3 times what the equivalent desktop would cost, for no reason. Most never take it out their home.
The only people who should have laptops are those that travel a lot for work, or who need them for school.
::sigh:: But that's another rant.

How was this thread whining? He just felt that changes shouldn't change the basic nature of the game, which is a reasonable concern.
Larryboy: Don't worry - the changes probably won't change the basic nature of the game. They will probably want to use much of the same material for the PC and console versions, so even if they rework console combat, they won't change the genre or style since that would make it much harder to use the same material. DA:O already played different on console and PC - its just that some were less than happy about how things were implemented on the console, and Bioware wants to try things a bit differently. We'll have to see what it looks like. I use the PC myself, but I hope the console game is just as good.

I own a laptop because of limited space. The desktop PC simply took up too much space.

LarryBoy Dragon: Kotaku seems to infer more than we really can at this point. We know the PC system will be roughly the same and the console versions will have more significant changes. But we don't know what they are. Don't over-focus on the "action" related buzzwords that Bioware uses to promote the game - the same thing was done with DAO, so it doesn't mean that the game will not have RPG combat.
Personally, I didn't play the XBox version, but my friends who have played both 360 and PC versions have said that the console version felt like a port and was more restricted and limited in its combat controls than the PC version. I don't know to what extent that is true, but that seems to be the concern that Bioware is trying to remedy, by making a system that is more comfortable with console controls, rather than trying to map keyboard and mouse. I would expect that they will not change the genre, but will rather try to create a combat system that preserves the same sense and feeling as the PC version. I hope that makes sense, and I hope the game is made in a way that satisfies you.
I only complain because I love them.
Your friends were right about the 360 version... it was less then ideal. But as DA was slated to be pc exclusive I was pumped to get it at all.

I got my laptop three years ago for law school; I could run DAO with it on Medium. I'm crossing my fingers that I will be able to play DA2 on it.

Look, there is nothing wrong with owning a console. That's ridiculous, and it's not what I'm saying. Hell I own a Wii (mostly, because there really is no reason for me to own an xbox or ps3, the Pc does those games already, and does them better) which I like a lot.
I'm just wondering, why you think that the more casual user base and the controller (which is great for certain types of games - I use it on my PC for racing games, for example) should have NO effect on gameplay.

Well, you might have reason to get excited. I think Bioware thought it was less than ideal too, which is why they are putting more attention into improving it. The new version of the combat might be better for console users, without taking away the RPG elements.

I don't really want to get into this argument, but the 'PCs are expensive' excuse doesn't fly. Most here are using their own computer anyway, instead of buying a console the money saved could have been used to buy a slightly better PC in the first place. That's what I did - it would have cost me roughly the same to buy a console and a very cheap computer, but because I like CRPGs I spent a little more on the PC and didn't bother getting a console.

See I don't get that. There are a lot of slim profile PC's which barely take up more space than a laptop and cost 1/3 as much. I've seen some of my friend's apartment's in NYC, and they are glorified closets, and yet they own a desktop PC and three consoles.
And you seem to own a console. How do you manage to squeeze that into your home?

Fair enough, I was wrong to assume that everyone was using their own computer. In my experience, libraries and universities tend to be quite strict about their computer usage, so it hadn't really crossed my mind that anyone would be using a public computer regularly for this sort of thing.

I will say again however that not much has been revealed. Now it's possible that the game will less tactical on the consoles, but then again, it already is. Hopefully they'll improve it to make it more usable with the controller. They might even make it more tactical in some other way.
Essentially it's too early to tell. And again, I feel for you. I'm still broken up about no races and the single titular character. I know I don't like having my favorite game messed with.

I have fitted wardrobes which allow for a console beside my TV, but besides that, not much space for a desktop PC.
