It isn't supposed to work with that slow of a video card. That one is for charts, graphs, presentations, spreadsheets, but not for games.

You mean in game or the configuration utility?
Updated through all the patches:

Disreguard my previous post as I see you got it working.

That's not what he said. He said he could run ME2 fine, not ME1.

I was wondering...  you mentioned the game froze during the config screen. You mean the config utility, or the actual settings section within the game?   If it's the first one, maybe the utility has problems collecting your system information.

If it's the second one, it seems to me like something is not working as it should. It might work, it might not, but maybe you could try forcing the graphics settings you want through the ATI graphics config utility (sorry, I don't remember how it's called).

Opps my bad sorry.

If it is the config utility crashing it probably means the config INI's located here: C:\\Documents and Settings\\*Username*\\My Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect\\Config have the read only function active, try deselecting the read-only box on the properties tab for each config INI.

Gorath knows a LOT more about computers and video cards than you do.  I've come to learn that when he says "won't run" he most likely means "won't run at a satisfactory level".  With his definition of "satisfactory level" being rather high.

I'm sure if you installed Fraps and used it to see how many frames per second your PC gives while running ME2 at such high graphics settings, you'd get at best 20 FPS, which is below optimal.

Graphics is the segment I've tried keeping up with more than any other, but the "standard" for what is a minimum is something the developers created, and is related to the manner in which the game is designed.  Medium resolution is the primary point at which they chose to start, and 30 FPS is the (general) frame rate that is considered as slow as they want to encourage.  Thus, a minimum card runs at 30 FPS with Low Image Quality settings, or in Low Resolution with medium quality settings.

Recommended is somewhat more variable, but is again pinned on Medium resolution, but at 60 FPS, and with Medium image quality settings.  Resolution changes offer the single largest influence on performance, so that at Low Resolutions, a below minimum video device may be somewhat functional running Low image quality settings, and depending on individual standards, various frame rates slower than the 30 FPS number.

Mass Effect 2 has a frame rate theshold of 15-16 FPS, below which it simply doesn't function (interaction fails).

How to fix Mass Effect 2 Low FPS  *UPDATED*
Falling back on to the original Coalesced file, I have found a way to fix my 11FPS frame rate during illusive man cinematics & debriefing cinematics. This breaks the immersion feel I like to get from games (not fluid enough for me). But after doing the following edits the illusive man cinematics now run arounnd 3X+ better (30-45FPS) [with sight dips during visualization of the sun], the debriefing cinematics now run at 82 FPS constantly after my editing.

This is quite simple actually: Change the values in red to the values in green.

[Engine.RenderDevice]
bUsePostProcessEffects=True  -> False

[Engine.VSync]
ForceFullVSync=True  -> False

[WinDrv.WindowsClient]
UseVSYNC=TRUE  -> FALSE

[SystemSettings]
UseVsync=True -> False

MinShadowResolution=32 -> 0
MaxShadowResolution=512 -> 0
(Very pivotal for if not 0, FPS is a mess no matter what)

[D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice]
DisableHWShadowMaps=True - False
BIOPixelShaderVersion=ps_3_0 -> ps_2_0

[Stats.Art]
FPS=_ -> 35

[Stats.Perf]
FPS=_ -> 35

[Stats.QA_IPS]
FPS= _ -> 35

[Engine.GameEngine]
bSmoothFrameRate=TRUE
MinSmoothedFrameRate=32 -> 62
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=62 -> 84

[SystemSettings]
SmoothFrameRate=True
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=62 -> 84
MinSmoothedFrameRate=32 -> 62

Non-Relevant data removed.

I  had to sign up for an account just to tell you this.  You're dead wrong, so stop laughing.  That is a very capable mobile chipset.

I have written this next comment many dozens of times over the last dozen years -- everyone has his / her own individual sensorium.  Some people are readily satisfied with thin gruel instead of a nice, hearty stew.  If they don't care to see what the game designers had in mind for them, they are welcome to make the trip in steerage and miss the full effects available to others with more normal aesthetic responses.

Chipset graphics aren't meant for anything more demanding than business graphics, no matter who designs them.

"Fusion" is coming in 2011, but that isn't going to be the same thing.  AMD wants to have a full-power graphics capability fully integrated into the CPU cores, by which they have been describing a "Mainline" card type of graphics, not anything like as weak as an onboard (in chipset) device, which currently amounts to about the same capability as their three year old HD 3450, in the AMD Chipset.

Just installed ME1, first time, and seem to be having this problem. Found the file, deselected read-only, applied, and... as soon as I bring the properties back up, it's back to read-only status for some reason. This is probably more a general computer question, but it applies here. For clarification, I'm using Windows 7, which is probably part of the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Scygnus, I was having exactly the same problem. The configuration unit always crashed, and when I tried to deselect read-only in the config folder it just reset to read-only. I'm using windows 7, as well. But as soon as I patched to 1.02 the configuration unit started working, so hopefully that's all you need to do to fix it. Unless you've already installed the patch, heh. Hope that helps!

Alright, second question, where can I get the patch? I tried the link above, but it gives me "Sorry, no download servers available at the moment!" on the download page.

EDIT: Never mind, I found the official place that has it, masseffect.bioware.com/me1/pc/updates/index.html
