Dragon Age 2 combat, unchanged, PC only......according to Game Informer?

From Game Informer article via Kotaku:

Information from the latest issue of Game Informer has begin
appearing online, and mentions that Dragon Age 2 is doing away with the
classic "tree" dialogue system, where you're presented with lines of
text that you select, and replacing it with Mass Effect's "wheel",
which uses intent as a means of generating almost "real-time"
conversations. There's a slight change, though; rather than basing your
answers on their position on the wheel, the "hub" will now clearly
indicate what tone your response will be; anger, flirting, etc.

You'll also be able to carry over your save game from the first
title, the events you forged in Dragon Age determining how things turn
our in the sequel. Sounds strange, but Dragon Age 2 begins while the
final events of the first game are coming to a close, so there's
cross-over there.

Another change - and this might be the biggest - is that only the
PC version will retain Origins' "strategic combat". The console
versions will feature a new combat system, one BioWare says plays to
the strength of the control pad. "Rather than try to mimic the PC
experience on consoles",
the GI report states, "Dragon Age II has a
battle system more tailored to the strengths of the PS3 and 360."

thoughts? speculation? truth?

Truth unless Game Informer looks like a bunch of fools.

At any rate, I thought the combat was great as it was and am glad that Bioware feels the same way for PC. Evolution is fine, and I'm sure they'll do that. But I didn't want to see it 'actioned up' or to lose any control over party members...and it doesn't seem that will be happening.

That's still enough changes for me.

Time to move on I suppose.

well I play on PC..so I'm happy about this part at least if it's true.

now if I can just find out that they aren't dumbing down the RPG elements ("Streamlining" for you ME2 apologists) then I'd have to admit it won't be as bad as originally thought.

long as they're actually expanding on and improving the areas that need it instead of the cop-out way ME2 outright removed them that is.

Awesome. After the Hack Job on ME2 finally some PC Gamer Love! PC hardware isn't that expensive folks. Get off the couch, build yourself a system and ditch that crappy console!!!

Hmm. Well I've had a few occasions of totally misjudging the tone of some of the comments in DA and pissing people off accidentally, so I can see this being a passable feature - surely the only real difference is that you don't see the words printed out before you say them?

Can't say I care about combat changing on consoles as long as it stays similar to normal on the pc. I really don't understand how people can play d&d style games on consoles anyway, it really doesn't suit the hci.

Hopefully. If the gameplay is different enough, I might buy both versions, eventually.

While I think it's great that they're trying to make the console experience better I'm worried this is gonna turn into a case of them making minimal improvements to the PC version while hyping up the console releases heavily.

As long as the whole game isn't recruiting allies for the Battle of Kirkwall I'll be fine; the combat should be good; if there is a significant difference I might be both versions, PS3 and PC, if the graphics change though.....

jRPGs have been playing to the strengths of consoles for years. They've successfully had turn based and real-time based, strategic and hack n'slash games for years. I'm just sayin'.

Good and Bad imo.

Good because I like the DA:O combat.

Bad because it's potentially time/effort spent on a system that I'm never going to use. Unless the systems aren't that different.

I like my Xbox though, besides, I don't have like $2000 to build my dream computer.
Does this mean hack n' slash gameplay on consoles?

Wait...really? This seems like a really foolish decision simply in terms of what can plausibly be achieved in a few months. Two separate combat systems for one game? Seems like a real waste of time -- and sure to result in a sort of neither-fish-nor-fowl product.

I have no issues with them tweaking the combat system to suit console better. thats great. Hell I can even forgive the lack of being able to choose your race and all that. But if they slash away the skills and spells and stuff like they did with ME2.. I will be pissed. If they make this into a "shooter" style, I will be pissed. If we lose control of our other party members and what spells and skills they are using and are forced to use some crappily concieved and implemented AI system.... Guess what? I will be pissed.

But I guess I should just resign myself to being pissed.. Hell, they said it themselves. "Strategic" combat only on PC. So that means our console versions will feature, bland, boring, mindless combat for all those casual and shooter morons?? Yea great, just what I wanted in the sequel to one of my favorite games.

Oh NOooo!... Now what will the pc gamers whine about?... So, for my X360 special edition I want the game bundled with a new pad shaped like a freakin' giant Axe for some Blight-bashing action, that's what I'm sayin'...

Sounds like a more or less good decision to me. I hope that, like someone mentioned above, they try to emulate a combat system like what was seen on FFXII. That was some awesome combat. I'm happy PC combat will remain as it was in the old game. I am now relatively satisfied with the direction of this game.

$2000? Dude, you've been lied to. My rig's about three years old, cost me about $400 when I built it plus maybe about $100 for leftover components from my last one. It runs DAO and ME just fine.

Can someone explain what FFXII combat was like? I checked out of JRPGs a long time ago

Good decision! I prefer to combat the enemies than seeing the character playing it for me.

If they emulate FF 12 ombat system, I'll **** my pants.
FF 12 combat was very fun, 13 was horrible.

Almost exactly like DA:O, except you had one fewer party member and a streamlined system for hijacing and controling their actions. It was actually incredibly effective. It would require a slight retooling of the spells/skills system, just to make things more accessible in a menu type interface, but that's about all.

I think FFXIII combat is exciting, very visual, and a lot of fun. But certainly FFXII was much better. If they had just had the free movement and let you program your party AI like in XII, I would have been in heavan.

Indeed, realistically a PC that could run DA:O would be $300-$400.  If you have any somewhat recently bought computer, all you'd need to do is slap in ANY video card made in the last 5 years and you'll be fine.

My sister played through DA:O on lowest on an X800 GT, of course the rest of the computer specs were pretty high (4gb RAM, Decent Dual Core) but realistically you can run DA:O with the most basic hardware.

ME is a different story, but then again an X800GT came out back in '03 and doesn't have SSE3 support.  Something more modern like a 4670 won't cost you more than $60 or so and will run just about anything nicely.

I actually like that.  Rather than forcing PC to play like a console or vise versa (as is the case here) you're catering to the strengths of both.  Thank you.  Nice going BW!  :D (If true)
