Hmm... so proper PC controls instead of a consolified action fest? I'll have to see it to believe it. The ME 2 adaption of controls for PC was quite bad.

From Game Informer article via Kotaku:

Information from the latest issue of Game Informer has begin
appearing online, and mentions that Dragon Age 2 is doing away with the
classic "tree" dialogue system, where you're presented with lines of
text that you select, and replacing it with Mass Effect's "wheel",
which uses intent as a means of generating almost "real-time"
conversations. There's a slight change, though; rather than basing your
answers on their position on the wheel, the "hub" will now clearly
indicate what tone your response will be; anger, flirting, etc.

You'll also be able to carry over your save game from the first
title, the events you forged in Dragon Age determining how things turn
our in the sequel. Sounds strange, but Dragon Age 2 begins while the
final events of the first game are coming to a close, so there's
cross-over there.

Another change - and this might be the biggest - is that only the
PC version will retain Origins' "strategic combat". The console
versions will feature a new combat system, one BioWare says plays to
the strength of the control pad. "Rather than try to mimic the PC
experience on consoles",
the GI report states, "Dragon Age II has a
battle system more tailored to the strengths of the PS3 and 360."

thoughts? speculation? truth?

God Damnit.  Now I need to upgrade my computer to support DA2 on the PC.

Woot!!! :OThank you for that Suron.

I was hopping for that saved-games crossover but it's awesome to know that it's really going to be true.

If the console combat is like Demon's Souls, I will literally weep tears of joy.

If it's like Final Fantasy, I'll get the PC version.

This is great news. I have no doubt that the console will have the superior versions now.

heh..yah..if lower resolution...clunkier menu navigation...and no mod support is your thing..

I can hook my PC up to my 52" LCD, play with the more precise controls the keyboard/mouse offer, with a proper resolution, while still sitting on my couch relaxing just like you.  and on top of that enjoy any mods the community put out....even if there is no toolset..there'll undoubtedly be mods (even ME2 has some great re-textures)

oh yah..consoles are superior...yep...100%

I cry. I don't have the PC to run DAO. If I want the combat them its spending $360 to upgrade and re buy all my DA stuff. :( Why Bioware?

It's quite easy to explain. Look no further than to your fellow console gamers in this very thread.

Sounds like a more or less good decision to me. I hope that, like someone mentioned above, they try to emulate a combat system like what was seen on FFXII. That was some awesome combat. I'm happy PC combat will remain as it was in the old game. I am now relatively satisfied with the direction of this game.

If they emulate FF 12 ombat system, I'll **** my pants.
FF 12 combat was very fun, 13 was horrible.

I think FFXIII combat is exciting, very visual, and a lot of fun. But certainly FFXII was much better. If they had just had the free movement and let you program your party AI like in XII, I would have been in heavan.

Quick question exactly how many FF games are there? I have only played 3 and I always wondered why it is called final fantasy each game when it is supposed to be final. maybe im reading into it too much.
First fantasy, second fantasy, thirteenth fantasy... the game has more sequels than 'the land before time' movies

I'm actually a little disappointed. After the buzz about another combat system we find out it only applies to the Console? I was looking forward to trying out another approach to combat on my PC version ... ah well, good and bad news I suppose.

While I think it's great that they're trying to make the console experience better I'm worried this is gonna turn into a case of them making minimal improvements to the PC version while hyping up the console releases heavily.

This might be true, because they make more money off the console versions.  If a company wants to sell extremely well they would hold back PC versions of many of their games because of piracy.

Awesome. After the Hack Job on ME2 finally some PC Gamer Love! PC hardware isn't that expensive folks. Get off the couch, build yourself a system and ditch that crappy console!!!

No.

Yes?

You can build your own pc that will max absolutely everything you throw at it for like $600. If you're already going to buy a $400 desktop, you might as well make it your gaming system as well.

Hmmm, lemme think...  No.

I use my computer for digital  art. Not for gaming. Never will.

I'll stick with my 360, thanks.

There are a lot, because there are even subsets. Outside of the regular franchise, there are also a number other franchises, like Tactics that has a set of games, Crystal Chronicals, that has a set of games, and even a couple of direct sequels like X-2 and XII: Revenant Wings.
In the original franchise there are currently 13 FFs. XIV is about to be relased as a new MMO, and XIII: Versus is about to be released as part of the set of FF13 games.
They are all called Final Fantasy because way back in 1982 SquareSoft was about to go bankrupt and they made one last game before they were to declare they were going under. The name of the game was Final Fantasy as it was going to be the final fantasy that SquareSoft put forward. But Final Fantasy was a smash hit that sold enough coppies to save the company. So later they made a sequel: Final Fantasy II, which was set in a completely different world with a whole new story, and so the tradition continued from there.

I think this is probably a good thing. I prefer the PC combat, but reviews constantly criticized the console versions. If they tweak things, it might feel a lot more natural on the consoles. I'm just curious as to how they're changing it and how much.

If the convo system is going the route of Alpha Protocol than we are in for a treat! And some more button mashing for us consolers could be fun! Bring it!

The PC controls for DA:O were great, but they didn't translate well onto the console version of the game. It's just a shame that they couldn't figure out a way to preserve the tactile combat with a good control scheme.

Thankfully I'll be able to import my Xbox 360 saved game from DA:O into the PC version of DA2! While I have the game on both, my first character was on my 360 and I'm happy with how that game turned out. But good job for Bioware for recognizing that some of us might switch to PC because of the changes on the consoles!

If it's true you can carry over a saved game, and the combat is unchanged, I'm suddenly feeling a lot better about DA2!

I don't think I'll ever like the conversation wheel though

Apparently there is a question of whether or not to retain isometric gameplay. If you remove isometric gameplay, I absolutely cannot see how you can say that you have retained the gameplay.

I thought Bioware had already stated that PC combat would remain virtually unchanged, and that the top down view wasn't going away. How do we end up with pages of speculation?

I wish that Bioware gave us the ability to choose between classic DAO combat and DA2 New combat on PC because it sounds really fun so far. I'd buy it for 360 but lack of isometric view sucks.

My friend let my play his DAO on his computer and it was cool but I hate puppet master combat for my Player Character ( Ok with party members I'm more then happy to pause and orderd them around ). If they added isometric view to 360 or added option to use new combat system on PC for DA2 I might even buy DAO =) ( eventually I will anyway)

Up until BioWare came along with KoToR pretty much all RPG's center focus was on game mechanics and character development from a statistical stand point. That doesn't mean story was neglectated but gameplay was pretty much the driving force of the RPG genre for a long time. BioWare has kind of shifted philisophy, focusing on the story, character development through dialogue, and lessening the complexity that was typically seen for a long time while bringing the RPG genre into the main stream.

In othe words, lots and lots of people for the longest time played RPG's for their game mechanics and still do as evident by games such as Mount & Blade and Drakensang.

So you're saying that prior to KotOR the games labled as RPGs weren't RPGs at all as they focused on element irrelevant role playing. You do NOT play a role when you go shopping for shoes only to end up going though a linear and pre-determined story. It's sad that the developers and games industry of the time had a sub-par intelligence and decided to classify games that had nothing to do with playing a role as RPGs. At best they could be called strategy games and at worst shoe-shopper gamer representing what the player had to do.

IMHO, there's still no computer game that's a RPG. No computer game has achieved that.

Why do so many people insist on having uncomfortable chairs for their PCs?

I was going to say the same. My chair is more expensive than my screen, and it's a pretty good screen.
