I just read another thread and had a terrible thought, could Bioware have planned this all along?

Let me xplain...

The fanbase for action/adveture rpg out here are much much larger then the one I belong to, traditional rpgs..

Since many of those who are like me who didnt play Bioware action adventure games like Mass effect could DAO been a way to get us in line?

I realize we dont have much info yet but still the little info thats out there seems to be making DA2 into a more action adventure rpg and away from the traditional rpgs...

Is it possible?

Why would they have to? I see plenty of people with both the DA:O and the ME2 icons under their avatars, and that's just this forum.

I would imagine there is far more crossover, far more people who are just plain BioWare fans, than exclusive fans of one or the other style of RPG.

I wouldn't say it was 'planned all along.' I'd rather say they picked this route due to Mass Effect 2's success, and the time factor they had to push out the sequel in.

And I have a funny feeling they wanted to focus the line in such a way it would be easier to make a movie out of it too. They needed an identifyable 'Shepard' rather than 'Some random warden guy.' I'd expect a definitive 'look' for Hawke on all boxes & promos.

There's no basis to the "it's turning into an action RPG" stuff being trumpeted. People are reading way too much into that.

That said, just because someone is a fan of action RPGs, doesn't mean they are not fans of traditional RPGs.

And finally, DA:O is not a "traditional" RPG. In fact, it was touted as a dark action RPG in the advertisements.

How does that have anything to do with the style of gameplay? I personally bought ME2 because I loved ME1, the change in gameplay had nothing to do with it. Even had they kept the same combat system and whatnot for ME2, I still would've bought it. And I think DA2 would be just as successful, with or without any change in the style of gameplay. This (Not the above quote, the change in gameplay) seems like one of those "causation by correlation" logics that don't have much logical basis.

I think I recall several months ago David Gaider defending the practice of an unvoiced lead character on these forums. So at that point, presumably that decision had not been made.

(I think it was the right decision.)

And ... BOTH Bioware's games last year were major hits, EA is just in severe enough financial straits that they kind of needed them to be EVEN BIGGER hits -- on a level that just isn't likely for an RPG.

I doubt there was the remotest hint of a conspiracy theory.

If I were to speculate I'd say something like this went down:

-Devs trying to decide how they're going to do DA2, whether it continues the Warden's story or tells an entirely new one

-Decide that it might be better to have a more focused narrative rather than the same structure as in Origins partly to not take away from the significance of the first game but also to break away from the Bioware cliche

-Create Hawke, decide that they should take advantage of having a pre-defined character and have voice over/dialog wheel.

Wrong. DA:O out sold ME2 by a lot and nearly out sold ME1 and 2 combined. Infact the Dragon Age: Deluxe Edition alone outsold ME2.

I'm not even going to ask for a source, just read that back to yourself and ask how absurd it sounds. Not that many people buy special editions, only hardcore or people who just like that sort of thing, we know ME2 sold very well but I don't think just the deluxe edition would outsell any AAA titles. ME2 + ME1 probably sold better than DAO each, I only bought DAO because I don't like ME, I bought Awakening and enjoyed. So far DA2 has not impressed me but I'll wait until the trailer at least.

Is it that far-fetched to believe that a title that is not exclusive to 360 and PC didn't sell as much as a title that is also available on PS3?

They probably were planning this game all along, but they aren't changing it to an action/adventure game. Or at least, they have given us no indication whatsoever of a genre change, and every indication that it will still be a traditional RPG.

It all depends on your interpretation of BioWare's own comments, I suppose.

However, DAO was released on 3 systems, while ME on 2, so it probably did sell more combined

No it's just the way most journalists on sites say about ME and DA, of course they all could be wrong and so could I. And for consoles I am going to say one word that could show that ME did better: SHOOTER. I hate them but look at Call of Duty, Halo, Resistance, they sell VERY well on consoles.

Fail box sales = care. 12 year old console kids dont count for true gamers. True gamers have and will always stay loyal to the PC.

I consider myself a true gamer and I bought DAO for the PS3 first then played it on the PC. I prefer to sit down and play it on my sofa downstairs, turn the speakers up so the music can be heard in it's proper form.

Doesn't really matter. BioWare is company that wants to make money and console versions usually sell better which is why most companies target consoles more. It may come as a suprise to some of you, BUT PEOPLE LIKE MONEY, companies like BioWare don't exist to grant you wishes. They make what the majority wants 'cos they want to make a profit
