So in light of the new images with Hawke pulling a Van Zan (Reign of Fire) on the darkspawn ogre, my question is what the darkspawn doing on the surface? After the Blight and the Awakening Plot, shouldn't they all be retreating in the deep roads? And considering how this takes place shortly after the previous Blight, it's unlikely that another Blight is taking place since they average about 200 years apart- or something like that I think. What's going on?
I don't understand, I thought the Darkspawn went back into hiding????

There are always stragglers.
That said, you'll just have to wait to find out, eh?

Even though there is no archdemon to lead them, they still might for war bands and roam the topside, at least in my understanding.

The lighting in those screenies looks an awful lot like Lothering. It wouldn't surprise me if you start off fighting the darkspawn in Lothering before moving forward in time.

Or maybe... it's the return of the Architect. I mean, look at the first darkspawn, he seems like the (Spoiler Alert) talking kind that the Architect freed. Ooooo, the plot thickens.

I think I've read somewhere that the Blight is the only time they form a massive army but small warband do reach the surface occasionall

Well apprently if you complete Dragon Age Origins Awakening as a Orlesian Grey Warden you get a slide telling you that the Warden is "being called by the Order to the Grey Warden headquarters at Weisshaupt. Rumor has it that there is a new Blight there."
But I can't say with 100% certainty that it is true as I haven't completed it as a Orlasian Grey Warden.

At least a part of DA2 takes place while DAO is still happening, hence the Darkspawn.

Its been months, but I played through as Orlesian, and I don't remember seeing anything about a new Blight at all. How much of that is actually the ending and how much is wikia author speculation?

I spent quite a bit of time correcting outright errors in the DAO wiki. I think it's safe to say some of it's speculation.
Edit: But actually, those epilogues look correct.

They did go into hiding, they just didn't realise that we actually could see them when they had their eyes closed.
