I'll get this out of the way first: I didn't enjoy DA:O's combat. I just didn't click with me; I loved the game, but combat was never fun for me in any way, shape or form. I understand that, in the eyes of part of the community, I'm not a "hardcore" Dragon Age player. What they don't realise is that action-oriented systems don't have to be "casual". Whoever said DA2 would be a "mass-market" action game? There's more than one way to make a fighter, in the same way there's more than one way to make a strategy game. That applies to every genre; Portal and Deus Ex both showed us that. Just because nobody's come out with a truly complex, "hardcore" fighting game, with multiple stances and complex blocks, grapples and mechanics doesn't mean that Dragon Age won't do that. We have no idea what the system will entail, we have no clue where BioWare's going with it. All I know is that, in all likelihood, it'll suit my xbox control better, and it'll probably be more fun for me. Don't know about the rest of you, but that's what games are fundementally about for me, the "fun factor". Not how "mainstream" it is.

I think that BioWare's given those who enjoyed DA:O's combat a viable solution: buy DA2 on the PC. I understand that your DA:O savegame won't impact DA2 if you were playing on a console before, but that's a choice you'll have to make if you really enjoyed Origins's system. I'm sorry for being too casual, really I am. I'm sorry for forcing you to make that choice by showing the industry that the "mainstream" action market is more profitable than the "hardcore" strategy RPG market. All I can say is that I'm definitely buying DA2, and that decapitating Darkspawn will feel much better for me this time round.

The changes are unlikely to turn it into an action game. They probably just want to make it feel native to the consoles instead of feeling like a limited port. I think that's a good thing console gamers. I play PC, was happy with the PC controls, and am happy they are keeping them. But I personally know console players who did not feel that the console controls were as good, and I am happy Bioware is trying to remedy this.

A lot of the doomsayers are saying DA's going down the "action game" path. Not sure what to make of it myself, but BioWare are calling it a "new system", so it's unlikely to be much like DA:O's, even if it's not strictly an action game. I personally love PC, but I bought DA:O for the Xbox (my PC was horrible at the time), and I value importing my save game more than buying DA2 on the PC.

Information has come out through the Game Informer article, and people have discussed it on these boards.  You may not have seen it.  Bioware indicated that the PC version is roughly the same system, and the console version is being reworked to fit the controllers better than the original version.  The action game thing is unfounded speculation - the same emphasis on action and fighting was in the original game's marketing as well.

In any case, I hope whatever they do with the console version is great Posted Image

Keeping the 'strategic' options for PC is the one part of the DA2 announcement I'm happy with. I find it much more enjoyable than Mass Effects 'action game' style.

I have no problem with them 'streamlining' the system for console versions so long as they keep the PC style intact.

I don't want it to turn into an action game but I'd like to see what they've done with it. I enjoyed the combat on my Xbox 360 but eliminating the click and wait part may work well.

If the change makes the combat feel better, then I'm all for it. I just hope that they don't make it feel less like a tactical rpg and more like a hack and slash/action rpg. If combat just feels better because of the attention they've paid to how the game works with a controller, but still keeps its tactical/strategic element, then I'll get used to it eventually. I'm just scratching my head on why people think that the combat system on consoles was so bad that it needs a major overhaul. The ability to position my allies during combat without having to manually move them myself, and perhaps a way to hotkey more than 6 skills/talents are the only things that I could see that might need fixing, but I got used to the system.

If they didn't change the combat system at all, I'd be perfectly happy. I just don't want a dumbed down version of the pc game. If I want a mindless hack and slash, I'll go play Dynasty Warriors.

This. So much this. I was overjoyed with the news they won't be overhauling the PC version. I could care less about the console version, lol. Sorry console players. Get a PC?

DA:O's control and combat system was way better on PC than XboX or PS3.

I've played through the Origins on PC then I tried Awakening on XboX. I was like WTF is this crap?

Compared to the PC it was miserable. So I say let's keep the PC settings or improve it (don't dumb it down), and upgrade the XboX version a lot.

I really want some improvements and appreciate larger scale battles-more enemies in the same battle field.

PC seems to only be facing some minor changes... let's see what they do. The 360/PS3 overhaul is welcome to me though :) I like my games to look good, and my current PC isn't capable of doing modern games justice. If it feels good to fight with a gamepad, that's great too

I agree with alldda about the scale of the battles, too. The PC could handle larger battles in Origins, consoles couldn't. I'm cool with reduced mob size in consoles, but I hope the PC version sees some massive, utterly epic conflicts.

The PC version will likely have tactical combat very similar to DAO.

That said, I'd like to see them add in more strategic decision-making, rather than focussing entirely on tactical decision-making.

i thought the controls for the console was ok, but i think that they should go back to the Kotor way where all your spells were under the bar and u just had to pick what ability u wanted to use

...Now if somebody would post man-giraffe-dog here, my day would be complete.

I admit the combat is faster, and the battle mage animation is good.
But because of the 'fast as hell' combat and body exploding everywhere
most of the time I can't even tell which party member doing which, and
the poor camera view is not very helping either ... must love the pause button ..
