This issue looks to be caused by the Steam version of NWN2 using different registry values to specify the install path. I'll have a Steam-compatible version of the CE released soon to address this.

Release 1.0.0.19 posted (same download link, see the first post).

---

Changes:

- The NWN2 Steam client is now supported.  You may now use both NWLauncher.exe or the manual apply option to use the Client Extension should you have the Steam version of the game.
- Fixed a bug that prevented players with the Client Extension applied from being able to send tells to players with spaces in their character first names.
- Improved performance of the Client Extension's resource loading system.
- Added experimental "Fullscreen Windowed" mode, enabled via the /fswindow command (toggle).  This mode is useful if you use multiple monitors and do not want the game to exclusively capture input.  For fullscreen windowed mode to optimally, you may need to manually edit screen resolution in nwn2.ini (typically, set Width=(screen width), Height=(screen height-24)).  It's best to put /fswindow in your autocmds.txt to always enable it if you want to use fullscreen windowed mode; see the readme for more details.

I have released an updated 1.0.0.19 build (same download links).  Since this is a bugfix only release, I have rolled it into the previous 1.0.0.19 release.

Changes include:

- Fixed a long-standing issue where the drag detection code could sometimes cancel your selection when trying to click on the DM Area Chooser map for teleporting creatures around as a DM.  Drag selections are now only registered if the cursor has moved at least 2px from mouse click to mouse release.

- The DM Standalone Client will now also load CD-Keys from the NWN2 home directory instead of just the NWN2 install directory.  The Steam-packaged version of NWN2 prefers to write the CD-Keys to the home directory and not the install directory.  This fixes the "CONNECT_ERR_EXPANSION_PACK_WRONG" error that players might receive when trying to use the DM Standalone Client with a Steam-packaged NWN2 install.

This breaks multiplayer on Windows 7, steam version. Game gets stuck at "connected to server" and eventually times out.

Wheezle,

I haven't heard of reports of this before in multiplayer. Could you try typing "/localnetlayer" in the Send message window before connecting to see if that changes the behavior that you are seeing?  There should be a confirmational "Not using local NetLayerWindow" message written to the console when you do that.

If this changes the behavior here, I can work with you directly to gather more information as to what exactly is going on in your circumstance.

Hi Skywing,

Thanks for your prompt response. That seems to have done the trick! I'm now able to connect without issue as far as I can see.

Is there any particular information you need about my setup here?

Hi, Skywing,
I'm trying the Client Extension on the advice of Saulus at the PW Sundren. It appears to help with some issues there and perhaps has some others. I'm pretty sure that stuff is at the Sundren end. It more or less doesn't affect SP play.

There is one issue, however that I should report to you. After I exit the game there is a consistent error, whether I'm on Sundren or doing Single player. I always get the Windows box to send an error report to Microsoft.

I'm running Windows XP Pro, latest patch and version 19 of the Client Extension, downloaded about 3 days ago. NWN2 is patched as specified for the extension. I play in full-screen mode and am using the "preferred" method of starting the extension, ie using a shortcut.

Sorry for the long post. I'll have to copy and paste the error log as I cannot find the means of attaching a file.

Cheers,
Dave Fritz

Wheezle:

I've sent you a PM with a prerelease build link -- if you have the time, please give it a try without /localnetlayer and see if it resolves the problem you encountered.

Dave Fritz:

Thank you for the error report.  I believe I understand what is going on here, and have checked in a fix that ought to address this issue tonight -- this fix is scheduled to go out in the next CE release.  According to my analysis, this issue is most likely to occur when you run the game fullscreen.  It would only happen when exiting the game.

Hey Skywing,

When is your next CE release scheduled to go out?

Sometime, someday :) Whenever I feel like I have accumulated enough features/bugfixes that it is worth the overhead fighting with NWVault, etc, and when I have free time to burn on writing the release notes up and putting them out.

I just want to report that my 90 degree spin (reason for downloading this) hasnt changed at all. I notice you say "step left/step right bug". Its not the step that causes it, or at least I never use them, its the turn. Turning left or right while holding forward causes it. Is this not handled?

First off: Thank you SkywingvL!
I was giving up on some of the flaws in NWN2 until I found this.

Two questions if anyone could provide an answer I'd appreciate:

I want to learn more about the macro system, I read the readme tutorial but was looking for further detail if it is out there.
Specifically: when assigning macros to hotbars, they all have the same icon and hovering over them makes them read "Barbarians" Is there any way to alter either of these so that one can know which hot-key does what as right now I get them confused easily.

Secondly, I understand the /cast function for spells but found it didn't seem to work for me for other abilities such as those you get from feats. Is it possible to assign feat abilities such as activating/deactivating power attack, and/or using the Feint ability to macro'd hot-keys?

Yes, currently the macros all have the same tooltip/button. Changing this is something that may be feasible eventually, but will require some deeper modifications to the client.

Feats and mode activation will need some additional work as well. I'll look into these for a future release.

Thanks for the feedback!

Release 1.0.0.20 posted (same download link).

Client Extension 1.0.0.20 Release Notes
---------------------------------------
This release is primarily a bugfix release.  Several longstanding bugs in the
game itself are now fixed, and several CE-specific issues are now also fixed.
Additionally, several new features are available, particularly with respect to
a fully functional fullscreen windowed mode.

New features:

- /fswindow (fullscreen windowed / borderless windowed) mode now automatically
resizes the game to span the monitor the game primarily overlaps.  For most
users, putting /fswindow in autocmds.txt is the best way to permanently
configure fullscreen windowed mode if this is your desired method of play.
See the readme for details on how to set up autocmds.txt.

- Added rudimentary text to speech support (off by default), toggled via the
/tts command.  Text to speech support announces player join, part, and chat
events via the system voice synthesizer.  This feature is useful if you are
waiting for someone to log on while the game is minimized.

- Rotating chat and combat logs are now automatically written by the Client
Extension.  Logs are rotated once per day and named by character, with
entries individually timestamped.  Chat and combat logs are stored under the
"Logs" directory of your NWN2 home path, i.e.
"Documents\\Neverwinter Nights 2\\Logs".  Currently, only server notices are
written to the combat log; full combat text display is not yet available.

Bug fixes:

- Fixed a longstanding bug in the game client that prevented multiplayer from
functioning if the system uptime approached 49.7 days.  The symptoms of this
issue are that attempts to connect to servers immediately fail with an
"unknown error".  This issue is not specific to the CE.

- Fixed a pre-existing transition crash issue relating to creatures still
having client-side pathing active after the walkmesh for the outgoing area
had already been unloaded.  This issue would manifest itself as a crash at
EIP=00907787 in most circumstances.  This issue is not specific to the CE.

- Fixed the "disconnect at logon" issue that some players were experiencing.
The game's internal network timeout code is now completely bypassed by the
CE, which should resolve this issue for good.

- Fixed a Client Extension regression that interfered with hosting a
multiplayer server from within nwn2main.exe if the CE was in use.  This issue
would result in the game host never connecting to the internal server when
confirming that they wanted to start hosting a new server locally.

- Fixed a Client Extension regression that might cause the game to crash when
quitting fully out of the game, if you played in fullscreen mode.  This would
only occur when fully exiting out of the game and would not interfere with
  gameplay.

- Fixed a problem that occasionally caused crashes for players if they
attempted to use the CE "Send message" input window to send non-CE-internal
commands on an area transition, if the player did not type a message into the
standard in-game input field first (after the transition).

- Fixed a problem that prevented some commands from working properly when
processing autocmds.txt (most notably, /fswindow was broken here).

- Fixed a problem that prevented teleport from working reliably on the DM Area
Chooser window on some computers (related to drag selection detection).

- Most commands (and chat) can now be sent from the extension's "Send message"

Release 1.0.0.20 posted (same download link).

Client Extension 1.0.0.20 Release Notes
---------------------------------------
This release is primarily a bugfix release.  Several longstanding bugs in the
game itself are now fixed, and several CE-specific issues are now also fixed.
Additionally, several new features are available, particularly with respect to
a fully functional fullscreen windowed mode.

Looks good.  I'll check it out under Crossover Games and give you a report back.

I was curious if anyone has found a way to use the client extension with Xfire IG chat yet?  I raised the issue at the Xfire tech-support forums but so far no responses.  I am using a dev_games.ini to override the Xfire deafult NWN2 launch of nwn2main.exe and call nwlauncher.exe.

I don't use Xfire myself. Technically speaking, nwlauncher.exe runs nwn2main.exe (with command line parameters passed through), waits for it to finish starting up, then loads the CE into the nwn2main.exe and exits.

It's possible that Xfire needs some support for following child processes.  I could add an option to make nwlauncher.exe wait until nwn2main exits before quitting, but I'm not sure if that will be sufficient for Xfire.  It would be best to see if we can get a clear answer from their development/support team on this one.

As a workaround, you could manually apply the CE after launch via double-clicking ClientExtension.hdl (if you applied the included .reg file to enable the file association).

A friend just recently told me about the Client Extension and while this seems like a wonderful enhancement, I am having trouble getting the launcher to work with my system.

I'm running a Steam copy of NWN2 with Windows 7 64-bit, and using version 1.0.0.20, I hit the following error message whenever I try and run the launcher:

"Failed to launch Neverwinter Nights 2 (error 267)"

I'm able to use the rightclick / apply method with ClientExtension.hdl, and this seems to work fine, but is somewhat inconvenient. Any feedback would be appreciated, I can give more information if necessary.
