As mentioned in another thread, stat based twitch combat like Demon's Souls, coupled with the tactical battles and engrossing story of Dragon Age would be a dream game for me.

Except you'd only be able to control one character with no chance to micro because if you leave one character alone for even a few seconds, they'll be dead. Unless you know...they make the game easier. ;)

Not necessarily. You could add combat scripts to them like in the first one. You could simply pause, assign actions, wait for actions to complete, pause, repeat.

The hack and slash would simply be an extra layer of depth underneath this.

I agree that AI and balance issues would present themselves, but hey, DA was never that easy anyway;)

Yes, I am talking about the console version. Bioware should've just stuck with KotOR's combat system.

I can honestly say Dragon Age had the worst combat system out of any rpg I've ever played. It was like trying to play KotOR like Fable. Speaking of KotOR, I hope that's what they change the combat to.

Oh no! must...resist...urge to call you a stupid meathead and say go back to your shooter games...

To be fair, combat on the PC felt fairly diffrent and far better than on the 360 (I own PC version my bro owns 360 version.)

It was a combat system made for the PC, and you can tell.

I'm sure many console gamers will appriecate some changes.

I thankful they're changing it too. DA: O not only had a boring combat style but it took no skill what so ever. It was...

1. Click on Target.

2. Press some buttons.

3. Wait.

4. ???

5. Profit!

I would prefer a more slash n' hackin' style like Oblivion. Asassin's Creed also proved that slash n' hack can have alot of skill required for it (unless you spam medicine).

The combat system on the nightmare difficulty is crap.

Seriously you pause the game literally every 2 seconds to chug a potion. That's not combat, thats annoyance.

The pacing would be about perfect between normal and hard.

Disagree on the Assassin's Creed. It was basically a case of blocking and wait for the counter. Pretty boring imo.

Demon's Souls hacking and slashing - yes! If you've played both, you'll notice that your characters stat types are very similar......

I loved the combat system. I never played on consoles though.

All I know (did I miss something?) is that combat on the consoles is more fluid. The basic combat system is basically the same, though. So I don't think it's changing much, but correct me if I'm wrong, preferably with a cited source.

Changes I would like to see:

1. Remove the party system, who has time to manage that?
2. Make the combat like Ninja Gaiden
3. Remove all the "leveling", which is totally pointless, I should be as good as my controller lets me.
4. The story stuff is a waste of time, it should be like WoW where you just click a quest and say "accept"

Honestly, if it weren't for PC gamers, most games would be awesome. Gears of War exists people! Emulate that, geeeez.

Can I ask about what the Demon's Souls combat system is like?
I never got it...namely because I don't have a PS3 and because it's too hard.

You have to rotate potion strengths.  That means 3 potions on the UI bar, not 1.

I quit this difficulty by the time I got to the deep roads because it is retarded.

I have the game on the console and it's not exactly fantastic combat. You have limited slots for special attacks and the like. It's playable, but I wouldn't say it's a positive aspect of the game on the console.

Which is why I'm glad it's being altered for the console. Stop hating on the OP.

A controller only has so many buttons, this game shouldn't have more skills that a controller has buttons... that is just stupid.

Stop hating on the OP, just because DA:O wasn't all it could have been (think fable 2) doesn't mean someone should get flamed.

How do you know it's too hard if you don't have a PS3 to play it?

Go play Oblivion or Assassins's Creed. Leave DA alone.
Diversity is good.
Being just like every other game is very bad.
If I want to play a game that is in a style that some other game has already gotten right, I'll go play the other game.

Keep playing DAO then, since DA2 will be different.

Seriously, its evolution. I don't understand why people would rather everything stay the same.

If it isn't broeken don't fix it. They didn't force "evolution" on The Two Towers after The Fellowship of the Ring was a huge box office success.
There is nothing wrong with the combat in DA:O. It's challenging, thoughtful, all encompassing, and exciting. There is something wrong with the new generation of gamers. They have a short attention span and need lots of flashy images or they get bored too quickly.
My suggestion to everyone that wants to see combat change in DA, especially those that are seriously suggesting things like "similar to Oblivion or to Fable" (are you serious?!?), go read The Lord of the Rings from start to finish, then read A Tale of Two Cities, and then read Great Expectations, and then read The Stand. After you've finished all those books, come back and share your opinion on what you want combat mechanics to be like.

edit: Also, the magazine article already confirmed that combat will be of the same style on the PC version, while the console versions will be changed to better fit play with a game pad.

I find it excellent. The triggers control left hand and right hand, so you can have a combination of sword & board, dual wielding, sword and wand. You can two hand any weapon for faster strikes / hard hits.

Stats like strength, endurance, magic, agility all play a part (similar to another game?;)). Strength lets you hit harder, endurance allows you to hit more and block more often. Stats play an important part in the make-up of your character - a magic specced char will be rubbish with heavy armour and a big sword for example.

The combat itself is far from "fast paced twitch". It is an extremely measured process. If you rush in, you will die. Lots. That's why people say the game is so difficult. You have to think, use patience and time your strikes correctly. Highly tactical.

Also, your character has a very immersive feeling of weight. When you smash someone with a two-handed sword, you really freaking smash them. Highly satisfying.

I can see where you're coming from, but do you never think that if game a) had game B)'s features, it would be better (i.e. your ideal game in your own mind).

Dragon Age's world, storyline, characterisation, art, design etc are all immaculate. My perfect game would incorporate this, then at a low level add manually controlled hack and slash and at a higher level would go more Total War, with the current system laying in between.

Half the reason these threads exist is because people are passionate about this game and world that Bioware have created. These people only want to see a better game made. Our opinions may differ, but they're all coming from the same source.

But none of these mechanical systems are better or worse than each other. They are just different. And diversity is a good thing. Keep the hack'n'slash games in their place, and keep DA:O in the tactical combat areana. To each their own. Don't come spoil my poridge and I wont go spoiling yours.

You're always free to choose other games to purchase.  DA is clearly not for the likes of you and that is a very, very good thing.  Please go back to your middle school social studies homework and leave the discussion of DA2 to people who can legally purchase alcohol.
