But none of these mechanical systems are better or worse than each other. They are just different. And diversity is a good thing. Keep the hack'n'slash games in their place, and keep DA:O in the tactical combat areana. To each their own. Don't come spoil my poridge and I wont go spoiling yours.

Porridge is grim, so don't worry about spoiling mine.

Still, i'm looking forward to further news on what exactly is going to happen.

...I really liked Dragon Age PC combat control.

You had a lot of flexibility to combo spells and attacks with ease. Never really could get into the clickidy click click of Diablo style RPG's.

I can honestly say Dragon Age had the worst combat system out of any rpg I've ever played. It was like trying to play KotOR like Fable. Speaking of KotOR, I hope that's what they change the combat to.

I never got it...namely because I don't have a PS3 and because it's too hard.

How do you know it's too hard if you don't have a PS3 to play it?

A hell of alot of reviews made it sound utterly devastatingly difficult so i'm not really going near it. I like my games easy to play and fun.
I found this was another problem with DA: O. My kills didn't feel satifying after a while it just felt like grinding.

I do think DA: O went too much in the direction of MMORPGs.

Considering the combat system in Ninja Gaiden is highly polished the outcome would be epic ... but I doubt the average RPG gamer could handle that - the Ninja Gaiden controls are on the difficult side.

From PC perspective, it's certainly not the worst but it could've used some improvements in terms of impact physics and violent hit animations to make it more believable and gratifying. Aside from this, the existing combat was a welcome compared to their NWN effort. I played as a 2-weapon-wielder warrior and it was always a blast compared to the other warrior disciplines.

Another thing, I'd have liked is hits instead of being missed getting blocked. Because, I don't understand how can anyone "miss" hits at point blank range, especially being in a life threatening situation.

Demon's Souls you see demands both complex and strategic RPG player development (it's very easy to screw up a character completely, unlike in DAO, where 3 misplaced attribute points won't kill you), thoughtful selecting of armor, weapons and accessories AND at the same time requires very good player reflexes and timing. I myself completed Demon's Souls and had a lot of fun. Reflexes trained by Devil May Cry and RPG development I remembered from Gothic series served me well. However, I only have 43% of trophies for Demon's Souls and 100% for DAO. DAO is a much, much easier game. Once you leveled up a bit it becomes much easier. A common mob won't instakill you. A Hurlock won't kill a lvl 20 hero because player was too slow. In Demon's Souls no matter how many hundreds of hours you invested in it 90% of enemies will still kill you easily if your reflexes suck. Of course, early in game you may not have player stats enough to win no matter what your reflexes are. Everything matters - your armor weight compared to your strength, weapon model (it will realistically bounce off walls, trees and very hard enemy parts), enemy defense type, your attack type... Ugh. Imagine if Archdemon would instantly kill you if you don't perform a quick barrel roll.
Thing is, Demon's Souls always feels rewarding. Because unlike in DAO, everybody in DS can kill you no matter how powerful you are. You can be lvl 200, but if you were too slow and let Maiden Astraia's boyfriend impale you with his huge weapon, you're dead. Or left with a couple of HP and will die in a couple of seconds. Stats and leveling in DS determines your abilities, things that you can do. But you have to do it yourself, button mashing won't work. King Allant will perform a fatality on you and he doesn't care if you have a lot of HP and good armor. Because your ass was too slow and he grabbed your throat and impaled your heart with his sword (also stealing 1 level from you). In DAO it's easy. Point, click and select abilities.

I'm strictly talking about console controls, it doesn't work for the consoles simple as that. Please make them KotOR controls where you can queue abilities and have a proper pause not hold down L, none of that crap Mass Effect pause.

They should add a action queue. This would make controlling 4 guys at once much easier. I know how i pressed pause and gave them all an action. And as soon i unpaused they either forgot it, or hang doing nothing because of some bug. This was probably a timing issue in the round system going on in the background.

Looking forward to the new combat system that takes advantage of the controller for console versions. I love FPS, and damn proud of it, Fallout was one of my favorite RPG's because of that and Oblivion was one of the all time best. ME is a badass tactical shooter, similar to Gears or Rainbow 6, truly an amazing game that uses RPG mechanics as well as TPS. DA:O combat was new for me, and I can't say I approved, hopefully DA2 will turn that around and become something great. As to why there is so much hate, I really don't know, most of the hardcore RPG players use the PC anyway and from what I hear will retain strategic combat. Anyway, I know I'm gonna love the new combat mechanics, thanks Bioware!

I thankful they're changing it too. DA: O not only had a boring combat style but it took no skill what so ever. It was...

1. Click on Target.
2. Press some buttons.
3. Wait.
4. ???
5. Profit!

I would prefer a more slash n' hackin' style like Oblivion. Asassin's Creed also proved that slash n' hack can have alot of skill required for it (unless you spam medicine).

Go play Oblivion or Assassins's Creed. Leave DA alone.
Diversity is good.
Being just like every other game is very bad.
If I want to play a game that is in a style that some other game has already gotten right, I'll go play the other game.

Keep playing DAO then, since DA2 will be different.

Seriously, its evolution. I don't understand why people would rather everything stay the same.

Because they dont want everything the same (exaggeration much?).  The wanted existing features improved, some new things added with a new story.  Done.

And no, it's actually DE-evolution.

You have seriously not played enough RPGs then...  There used to be tons of them back in the day, you should go find some old ones for better perspective on your comments.

With mods (175 of them) Oblivion and it's combat can actually be  quite fun. Without them, yea, the game total balls. People seem to have  mistaken quantity for quality.

I never liked having to take turns hitting eachother in old RPG's, like Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, Gauntlet, FF, and many others. Also in most of those all the bosses were ridiculously difficult to defeat without a ton of heals and a perfect strategy from the start, granted I've never been the best at RPG's, but I know when something is flawed. I'm suppose to allow this God of a boss to hit me with his one hit kill attack and I can't even fight back because we are taking turns attacking wtf?Old RPG's blew.

The combat system on the PC will be fundamentally the same, right?

I can understand them changing the system for consols. If you couldn't go isometric and you don't have a mouse or keyboard I could see how cumbersome it would be.

You're always free to choose other games to purchase.  DA is clearly not for the likes of you and that is a very, very good thing.  Please go back to your middle school social studies homework and leave the discussion of DA2 to people who can legally purchase alcohol.

I find it excellent. The triggers control left hand and right hand, so you can have a combination of sword & board, dual wielding, sword and wand. You can two hand any weapon for faster strikes / hard hits.

Stats like strength, endurance, magic, agility all play a part (similar to another game?;)). Strength lets you hit harder, endurance allows you to hit more and block more often. Stats play an important part in the make-up of your character - a magic specced char will be rubbish with heavy armour and a big sword for example.

The combat itself is far from "fast paced twitch". It is an extremely measured process. If you rush in, you will die. Lots. That's why people say the game is so difficult. You have to think, use patience and time your strikes correctly. Highly tactical.

Also, your character has a very immersive feeling of weight. When you smash someone with a two-handed sword, you really freaking smash them. Highly satisfying.

Yes one of the brilliant things about Demon's Souls is the balance of stats.  NO STAT is a throwaway.

They even have LUCK and FAITH.  Every stat has a unique weapon you could build your toon towards.

For a NON PARTY based action RPG,  Demon's Souls is the best combat around.  Blows Oblivion away.

What type of gear you wear doesn't just determine how encumbered you are, it determines what types of weapons you are defended against, why type of magic, elements

It also slows your character down, changes the way defense works, rolling etc... Your character *feels* and *plays* different depending on the diff gear.

NO LAME JUMPING AIR COMBOS AND ARIAL ATTACKS like every other action game on the planet

Indeed, very good.

If you want a better combat system for party based RPG on the console,   SUMMONER is a great example.  Mixes DAO style w/ timing/chain attacks

YARGH! THE WAY I PLAY VIDEO GAMES IS INTELLECTUALLY SUPERIOR TO YOURS! I'LL KILL YOUR DOG!

In all seriousness, console combat was pretty clunky. That's why they're shuffling it around for DA2, after all, and I have no complaints. Whatever flows better, flows better. There's a difference between 'dumbing something down' and getting rid of tediousness.

I have a hard time believing that the combat is going to change THAT much. People keep cracking jokes (and complaints) by calling DA2 a hack-n-slash game. The guys on the GI podcast specifically explain that when they saw the game (they saw it on consoles) moves were still moves. I believe they use flurry for an example and go on to say (paraphrase), "Flurry is still one move, you press flurry and the character does it. You aren't hitting attack, attack, jump, attack." Or something like that. They go on to explain that it's just much smoother and responsive. That alone tells me combat will probably remain the same in a big way. If we had to use combos by hitting a couple buttons in succession, then THAT would be a big change.
