gi sucks balls dude. combat will most definitely be hack and slash. it's not even a guess, it's really obvious.andar91 wrote...
I have a hard time believing that the combat is going to change THAT much. People keep cracking jokes (and complaints) by calling DA2 a hack-n-slash game. The guys on the GI podcast specifically explain that when they saw the game (they saw it on consoles) moves were still moves. I believe they use flurry for an example and go on to say (paraphrase), "Flurry is still one move, you press flurry and the character does it. You aren't hitting attack, attack, jump, attack." Or something like that. They go on to explain that it's just much smoother and responsive. That alone tells me combat will probably remain the same in a big way. If we had to use combos by hitting a couple buttons in succession, then THAT would be a big change.
Thank god they're doing a different combat system.

I'd rather have the DAO combat system than Oblivion. Uhhhh, it makes my head spin!!!
With mods (175 of them) Oblivion and it's combat can actually be quite fun. Without them, yea, the game total balls. People seem to have mistaken quantity for quality.
I played some Oblivion a few days ago, it's amazing how much better Morrowind is in every way except graphics, map and questlog.
Never really understood what they were aiming for in Oblivion, it doesn't play like a Hack and Slash, and the scaling ruins the RPG elements.

I never liked having to take turns hitting eachother in old RPG's, like Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, Gauntlet, FF, and many others. Also in most of those all the bosses were ridiculously difficult to defeat without a ton of heals and a perfect strategy from the start, granted I've never been the best at RPG's, but I know when something is flawed. I'm suppose to allow this God of a boss to hit me with his one hit kill attack and I can't even fight back because we are taking turns attacking wtf?Old RPG's blew.Winzzy wrote...

I can honestly say Dragon Age had the worst combat system out of any rpg I've ever played. It was like trying to play KotOR like Fable. Speaking of KotOR, I hope that's what they change the combat to.
You have seriously not played enough RPGs then... There used to be tons of them back in the day, you should go find some old ones for better perspective on your comments.
Chrono Trigger isn't that hard, and it's one of the highest rated RPGs of all time. To say Chrono Trigger "blew" is like saying the Beatles or Led Zeppelin sucked. It's factually wrong.

I like video games. I own a decent gaming PC and an Xbox 360. I see no reason to crap on either. Some game are better on one, some on the other. It's really that simple.
This.
You can't hate on Bioware for going where the money is. More people play games on Consoles nowadays; Then factor in all the pirating that takes place on the PC, it's not rocket science.
The first couple pages of this thread just makes you PC fanatics look like bitter A-holes and it's hard to sympathize with a bitter A-hole. Also it's made this thread pointless.
Dev's aren't gonna waste their time with console vs PC argument threads.

Turn-based combat was very common in the SNES era, but there were several real-time RPGs. Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 3 especially) is all action. Bosses being difficult to defeat is a design choice, not because "old RPGs blew" or taking turns in battle.
It's mostly optional bosses that are godly - like Emerald and Ruby weapon. Still beatable though... Sephiroth is a pushover.
Hitoshura in Digital Devil Saga puts them all to shame. Now that guy is hard. Maybe the toughest (optional) boss ever.

Skill is a loaded term that can be qualified in many ways. Some RPGs, as with any other genre, require varying degrees of skill. Typically, in a RPG having a greater degree of skillfully planned strategy will result in better stats and less grinding.

AC combat is ridiculously boring and easy. The "RPG" elements of that game remind me of ME2, totally pointless and don't change the game at all.
AC IMO is more of a Skateboarding game without a skateboard. The best mechanic in the game is the roof running, you find a line, and run it. Which is exactly what Tony Hawk games used to be like when they were good.
THe rest of AC I feel is just tacked on filler.

When holding DAO up to "old school" RPGs, I find DAO combat to be a nice mixture of action and turn based strategy. I just can't help but feel that people that complain about DAO's combat just haven't played it enough to understand it (or just don't like RPGs).

Want to make DA tactical? Throw in more barriers; columns in buildings, trees and boulders outside, that must be navigated around and can be used to deflect or obstruct enemy attacks. Throw in alternating levels of terrain and actually make it matter. Attacking from higher ground should yield more damage to the target. Make it at a level that will significantly alter the outcome of battle so people don't just faceroll through it anyways. Throw in mud and marshland that penalizes heavy armor wearers. Add in structure points to the battlegrounds that can be exploited. A fireball or explosive trap to trigger a rock slide on enemies, ice spells to temporarily freeze over areas of water to allow for flanking or sneak attacks and such. Let us grease bomb a frozen lake to control enemies as they rush over and fireblast it to set up a grease fire as they're floundering to their feet only to have the ice melt beneath them. Then throw up a blizzard over the hole to seal it so they slowly die under a sheet of ice staring at your feet from below as you go on your marry way. Just keep it limited to things that won't effect your ability to progress through a zone. Let us spring trap or mind blast baddies off a bridge....
That's using tactics.

I fail to see how anyone can possibly think DA as being tactical. It required absolutely no thought process in the least. There is nothing at all engaging about running around a circle room with an ogre chasing you while a retarded AI has the 3 other rejects whittling it down with their swords hopefully before it charge stomps you into nothingness.
honestly, that's your fault for kiting to get through a battle.
