The NWN Master server, due to hacker activity has been taken down, bioware is working on replacing it with a new system and until it is replaced will not be available.

Multiplayer Login Tutorial

Note that there are two types of PW's to use, those that use the Autodownloader which allows you to browse and play games, and those that use the older PWC files which you either have to download. Usually the world has [ADL] in the name of the server or module if it's autodownloader capable. If it's not autodownloader capable you have to find instructions on how to play provided by the PW in question, usually on their vault page or on their forums.

1. Connect to Gamespy:
  • A. Launch Neverwinter Nights 2
  • B. On the main menu, choose Multiplayer
  • C. Login to Multiplayer. Enter your user name and password. If you have not logged in before, choose "Create New Account" and fill out the form. Click OK when done.
  • D. At this point you should now be able to see available servers to join.

2. Choose a server to join:
  • A. Browse through the servers by choosing different Game Types. Make sure to wait a second or two after you choose a different game type, so that the list has time to load.
  • B. Click on a server that interests you. You can sort by any field listed by clicking on its name. For example, to sort by # of players online, click "Players" up top.
Servers with [ADL] indicate they have an autodownloader which will download the Files. Not all servers have this set up, those that do not support the autodownloader , you will have to get the files from the people running the PW, ahead of time, please see how to find files below in the FAQ.
  • C. Click "Connect" which will start you connecting to the PW

3a. Connecting to the Server - AUTODOWNLOADER:
  • A. The server will start downloading files if it's downloader enabled. Those that don't and just show an error please see 3b below. Remember the PW admin should indicate that it uses the autodownloader in the list with [ADL] or similar. will require that you have already downloaded their files and will just have you select the character.
  • B. You can read the news, server rules or a summary of the server while it downloads.
  • C. You can click "cancel" to stop it from downloading at any time.
  • D. Click "Select Character" or "Create Character", this will be available shortly after critical files are downloaded and can be done while most of the download is taking place... You have to have a character prior to entering the world, and it works the same as in single player. After character creation you will return to viewing the downloader progress if it has not already completed yet.
  • E. Enter world by hitting "Start Game" button. ( need to verify this )

3b. Connecting to the Server - PWC:
  • Make sure you have instructions from the PW on how to connect to the given world, this will not work unless you already have the required haks, pwc, and tlk files. Since every server requires a PWC file unless it's just hosting an official campaign, you must get instructions from the owners of said PW. Please see the FAQ's below for guidance on how to find the PW, and how to download said files.
  • Click "Select Character" or "Create Character"
  • Enter world by hitting "Start Game" button. ( need to verify this )

4. I'm finally logged in -- now what?
A. Some things that can help you get started:
  • Movement is the same as it is in the single player
  • To speak out loud to people, hit the "enter" key then begin typing your message. When you're done, hit the "enter" key again.
  • The starting areas of many worlds include signposts and NPCs that you can speak to in order to learn more about the world. If such resources are available, you can often learn a lot by taking the time to explore them. Some servers also provide guides they put in your inventory.
  • Always respect the posted rules of the world you're visiting. If you find them to be too restrictive, there are many other worlds out there for you to explore.
  • If in a roleplay setting, they expect folks to keep things in character ( usually abbreviated IC ), ask for help OOC ( out of character ) by putting your request in double parenthesis, ie "(( i am new, can i get some guidance ))" Put anything you want to say yourself and not being said by your character in parenthesis like that.
  • Remember half the fun is in exploring

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Autodownloader - I connected but it fails to download the files.
  • 1. Try quiting the game once, if you were already on the server and reconnect it can lock some of the files preventing them from downloading again.
  • 2. The PW might be improperly set up, look to see if it's got 1 or more players to see if other people managed to get on
  • 3. If no players look like they are on, the PW might be currently being setup. You might have to try again later.
  • 4. To find out more information, %TEMP%/NWN2/LOGS$nwclientLog1.txt is the path to a log on your client which often will have more detailed information.
Q. Manual Download Only- I found a server i like in gamespy but i don't know where to download the files from
1. Click the button labeled "Server Details" and find the address in one of three places:
  • Check first in the "PWC Download" field.  If an address is present, you can click on it to receive the information you need for file downloads. (Not all servers have this information.)
  • If you there is no address in the "PWC Download" field, look next in "Module Website"
  • Finally, if neither of the above fields are filled, look at the Server Description field for a web site address.
  • Finally, Add the server to your favorites, if the above 2 fields don't work, adding it to your favorite and then repeating the above will often make those fields show up if they are actually entered ( they often don't show up ).
2. Search for the server name on google, generally it will find a forum, vault page or at least a post in the forums.3. Look for the files on the vault4. Post a request in the PW forums, usually someone can help you figure out how to get in touch with the forums involved.Go to the web site listed.  From there, you will usually find a clearly identified link for required downloads and follow their provided instructions. If none of this works then you probably can't play on the server.

Q. Manual Download Only- Where do i put the files i manually download
This is mainly for those not using the downloader, however you can use this to know where things should go.If a web site provides you with specific instructions for installing or setting up, always follow those instructions instead of these, many servers have exe programs like worldgate or audolo which will do this work for you.
  • Files ending in PWC go in My Documents/Neverwinter Nights 2/pwc
  • Files ending in HAK go in My Documents/Neverwinter Nights 2/hak
  • Files ending in TLK go in My Documents/Neverwinter Nights 2/tlk
  • If the file ingamegui.ini is included, it must be placed in My Documents/Neverwinter Nights 2/ui/default
  • Some servers will have Campaign files.  The Campaign files must go in a folder within My Documents/Neverwinter Nights 2/Campaigns.  The folder name to use will be provided to you -- usually it can be found in the information on the server's download page.
  • Some servers will have files that must be placed in Override.  Extract these files into My DocumentsNeverwinter Nights 2/Override.  Always remember that placing files in override can have unpredictable results, especially if you play on other servers, play other single player modules, or are still playing the  official campaign.
Other files go into the "Override" and "UI" Folders in the "Neverwinter Nights 2" folder. If in doubt, put them in the Override Folder, most likely they will work in override even if they normally go in the UI folder. It is highly recommended to make a folder for the said Persistent World inside the override folder to keep things organized. Please remember to remove these files before playing on another Persistent World.

Q. Manual Download Only- There is a web site, but I can't find the files on it anywhere.
A. This is all too common.  The best thing you can do is email the server administrator, explain that you could not find the downloads, and politely request that they direct you to the server downloads page.

Q. Manual Download Only- The server description is cut off.  I can't see the full web site!
A. Unfortunately, many server admins don't seem to be aware that there is a limit to size of the Description field.   Unless you can find the web site and file downloads through other means (such as searching for the server web on the web), you will not be able to join this server.

Q. Manual Download Only- What are these fields "Module Website" and "PWC File"  for?  Wouldn't that be easier than having to type in the web site myself?
A. These fields will contain the web site of the server, and sometimes a link directly to the file you need to download.  Currently, this is not visible to all players and unless the server is viewed from your History or Favorites list. The autodownloader really makes this unnecessary. Often it will also be in description field as well.

Q. Manual Download Only- What is a PWC file?
A. This file contains the map information for the server that you are trying to connect to. It is still used by some PW's but those that use the autodownloader no longer need to have this file anymore to play.

Q. Manual Download Only- When I download the PWC file, I have the whole module?
A. No. You have only the minimum files needed in order to log into a server.  You don't have the creatures, items, scripts, and other resources that make up a server.

Q. When I look at the server list, some servers are red, and some servers are grey. What does this mean?
A. Red servers require a password to log in.  You will most likely need to register at that server's web site in order to receive the password and download the needed files.  Grey servers are running a different patch level than you have.  This happens most commonly soon after a beta patch is released (some servers upgrade early); and after a final patch is released (some servers are slow to upgrade).

Q. I made a character and tried to log in, but was immediately sent back to the main menu!  What do I do? orQ. I made a character and tried to log in, and NWN2 crashed!  What do I do?
A. If either of these two things happens, this means that you have have not installed this module's PWC file.  Refer to section titled Downloading Required Files for details on downloading and installing this file and others that you may need.

Q. After making a character and trying to log in, I received an error message: "Could not Load the Module: Missing Required HAK File" .  What do I do?
or
Q.After making a character and trying to log in, I received an error message: "Could not Load the Module: Missing Required TLK File" .  What do I do?
A.  You must visit the server's web site, and download and install the require HAK or TLK file(s) before you can connect to it.  Instructions for that are in section Downloading Required Files

Q. I have having trouble connecting? I am having trouble Registering with Gamespy?
A. Are you using a fire wall such as Zone Alarm. If so either turn it off or consult it's documentation to learn how to make it allow you to connect. If you think that your firewall is preventing you from connecting to the game servers, please make sure that ports 5120 through 5300 are open. Additional Ports 3658, 3659, 3783 , 6500, 6515, 27900, 28900, 29900, 29901 and  28910 may need to be opened but it usually will work without having to do all of this.
Check out http://www.portforward.com for detailed configuration instructions for most common brands of router.(note: not affiliated nor supported by Obsidian Entertainment or Atari)

Q. How do i play with more than one person on a PW ( both being from your local network )?
A.If you have multiple computers behind a firewall and you want to play multiplayer with 2 or more of them at the same time, you must ensure the Client Port setting for each computer is set to a different value. You will find this entry in the file nwnplayer.ini (located in “My Documents/Neverwinter Nights 2/”).  Double click on it to open it, and look for the Client Port= line in the [Profile] section. Change this from the default value of 5120 on each machine. You have to stay in a certain range, so use numbers like 5121, 5122, 5123, etc.

Q. I've decided to stop playing on a server, how do i remove the downloaded files to free up hard drive space.
A. With the downloader you can delete all the files, it will just redownload any missing files which means that you can safely remove quite a few files. Files will be placed in your my documents/neverwinter nights 2/ and in modules, hak, tlk and music folders. The modules folder will have a folder with the name of the module. The hak will generally have a hak file named after the server but this can vary.

Q. I want to keep files downloaded in a separate location.
A.  The way to do this is to make a short cut for nwn2main.exe ( or the NWLauncher.exe file if you use the client extender ). Then go in and add to the shortcut -home followed by the name of the folder, which can be "c:/yourfoldername/" or just "yourfoldername" which will show up in my documents.  Or it will be in it's entirety "c:/Program Files/Atari/Neverwinter Nights 2/nwn2main.exe" -home c:/yourfoldername/ which will create a folder called yourfoldername on the root of your c drive where your game will run from. After this folder is created it is a good idea to copy over your ini files so you keep your prefs as you remember them.

Q I use steam and I cannot connect to the game, it says invalid CDKey
A. Steam has an issue where it does not save the Cdkey correctly all the time. If you run into this issue you will have to create your own ini text file with your cdkeys in it.

You should put this file in your application folder as shown below.
C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\neverwinter nights 2

Create a text document called nwncdkey.ini using something like notepad.

In this document write
[CDKEY]
Key1=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
Key2=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
key3=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

For the XXXX's those obviously should be YOUR keys. To get your keys, go to your Steam Library by Right-Clicking Neverwinter Nights 2, and selecting View Game CD Key. The first key goes after Key1=, the second key after Key2=, and the last one after Key3= above.

Q The game does not recognize my bioware/EA account username or says my user name already exists
A. The user logins used in game ARE NOT used on this forum, with EA, or related to what you would expect. They are the same as logins used on a discontinued forum this forum you are in is replacing. If you have ANY issue like this, you should create a new user name and login from inside neverwinter nights 2 as there is no way to resolve the issue. Some logins are also just known to be wonky, and sometimes this has to do with using extended, foreign characters or spaces. If you are having issues remove any characters not in the ranges between A-Z, a-z or 0-9 and see if that does better.

Actually i wrote that with input from the entire NWN2 community, it was based on what originally was posted on the old forums, but i reworked it to include the downloader as well as having helped a lot of people figure out how to play multiplayer. After i got a rough up it got picked apart by the other PW admins and those on IRC. Thanks for the compliment but it really was a group effort.

Hmm a question.

I'm trying to play MP on NWN2 for the first time but I can't play.

It keeps saying invalid username/password.

Do I need a special account or something ?

Good question.

Note that before you could use your forum login and password, but since the old forums are gone, and these forums are not connected anymore you will have to use a different login and password then you use on these forums. Go ahead and select "Create New Account" and create a new login and password, hopefully just starting new will help.

Also make sure you use a simple login and password, no spaces, no accents, everything should be letters from A-Z, or a-z and numbers 0-9, if you have fancy letters with umlauts and grave symbols above them, just skip em, keep it simple. Make sure you write this down when you are done even though the game will remember it ( it's stored in one of the ini files in your player folder ).

I am simply trying to setup a closed game which I can play with my father who is hundreds of miles away. How can we setup a game just for the two of us. Everything I've tried just keeps saying "Timed Out, cannot find server." Is this firewall issues... in which case we have both tried to turn off our firewalls, and still cannot connect together. What are we doing wrong?

Use nwn2server.exe to launch the module the two of you want to play.

Probably best to figure out which of you has the better computer and use that one as host.

Then you'll both connect to the server via the MP menu.  If you want to keep it a closed game (i.e. nobody else can connect), put a password on it within the server application that only you both know.

Configure your router, google the term NAT ( network address translation ) and how to forward incoming game packets to your router from your dad who is 100's of miles away to the specific computer inside the network in your home. Easier to explain if you have 5-6 computers using the same router, but the way to fix it is the same. Port Forward likely has a guide on it for your particular router.

These instructions are for a player connecting to a existing server which is properly working, setting up a server is more akin to what NWN DM described even if you are "just" playing with one other person, you probably want to get on the IRC channel so people can ask more questions and give much better advice. ( how to get on IRC is in a sticky in the main NWN2 forums )

Card Canuck - did this work for you?

A friend of mine's having the same problem right after he changed ISP & got a new router - we're not sure which is causing the problem, but we've opened all the ports recommended & still gettign time out messages, but haven't heard of trying the nwn2server.exe before - did it work?

You will most likely need to open the relevant ports on your firewall if you have not already done so.

Here is a step by step for a popular router, if you have something else you can search for that specific model.

I really doubt it's a firewall issue, it would not say banned, it would say it could not connect or similar.

Do you have a legal copy of the game ( not second hand either ), and can you try a new and different login/password.

Launch the game.

Click on Multiplayer.

Create an Account when the screen prompts you to enter a User Name / Password or Create a New Account.

Don't use what you use here (you can but if it accepts it know that it is complete coincidence).

[CDKEY]

Key2=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
key3=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

For the XXXX's those obviously should be YOUR keys. To get your keys, go to your Steam Library by Right-Clicking Neverwinter Nights 2, and selecting View Game CD Key. The first key goes after Key1=, the second key after Key2=, and the last one after Key3= above.
