Sounds like you’re making progress, pkpeachykeen. Preparing the backups for others to view, edit, or otherwise upload to a server and use, is the next step. Seems you’ve already started with that by making that C# application and stylesheets. That should make a lot of people happy. Good job.

As for me, I plan to keep the data in the same file format and visual design as the original.

Yup. At the very least, I'll be putting it in my (limited) home server and serving what I can from there. I may get something better, too, if I can find any hosting.

Also, I redid a lot of that since posting, making it more readable and with some more info, much better formatting. It's acting odd in Firefox, apparently the XSL parser is very strict and my code may be off, but in IE and Chrome it should look fine. The layout is incredibly light-weight, too (1 300x80 pixel banner and 2 1x64 pixel gradients, for a total of ~40kb of resources).

That's actually what I'm doing, partially. My parser is designed to work from the original format and design and make a copy, so...
It may be helpful to compare or cross-reference our mirrors when
they're done, though, to make sure we got as much as possible. Just make sure nothing important got missed. ;)
Good luck with your mirror, though. Mine's progressing nicely, but I'm getting awful download speeds (been getting a flat 100kb all day, hasn't cleared that). :(

Cross referencing or comparing our mirrors (when its done) sounds like a plan, pkpeachykeen. It's funny that the more files I download the more links it finds related to them and ups the files remaining. Now I'm at 42,498 files downloaded and 149,727 remaining. It's a good thing I selected just the forums directory and not the whole server.

So from here on I'll try not to mention how many files are remaining. The way things are going it might as well be 5 terabytes! With the deadline approaching I'm expecting the power to go out, the ISP to fail or a hard drive to crash. So far none of that has happened. So far.
Good luck on your end. If you see smoke rising in the distance its just my computer and ISP begging me for mercy. B)

Who gave you the impression that it'll vanish?

I'm pretty sure Woo, and probably Priestly would like to give 'em a bloody nose for misleading you.

@tymeSage: no sorry, i understood that no topics will be grab from the old NWN forum

I was informed they would be archived. Do not know if that means searchable by us shlubs though.

Of course it will be searchable...this is not the first time they archived posts. They've done it at least one time before....as you will notice if you use the search function on the old forum...that you can choose to search in archived posts...

BioWare wants the community to stop using the current forums all together. They’re spending a lot of zots on the new BioWare Social Network and that means they want us to use it. Sounds like fun so I’m looking forward to it.

The problem is that while BioWare has archived forums before they have never closed them before. They are not moving any of the legacy topics over to the new BioWare Social Network. They’re counting on us to do that.

If need be, I’ll provide a link to exactly what BioWare’s Chris Priestly said and what BioWare moderator dunniteowl summarized about our situation.

In any case, rather than hope for the best and assume none of us (and our favorite and most informative topics) will have a problem transferring to the new BioWare Social Network, pkpeachykeen and I have decided to do something about it.

We’re simply trying to back up the Neverwinter Nights forums and the archives, as they are right now, to make things a lot easier for everyone. Just in case there are problems with viewing, searching, or copying and pasting from the “legacy” forums. Just in case there are other problems that none of us have even thought of yet.

As Kephisto said, we're simply creating copies of it. I feel better having a copy nice and safe on my hard-drive, in case Bioware ever decides to retire the old forum completely or even if something just goes wrong. Having a second copy (Kephisto's mirror) just makes it that much safer and helps guarantee nothing will be lost.

Now, in addition to that, I'm post-processing the threads and creating an index of them. I'm looking into search engines now, but it looks like when I'm done processing them, I'll probably be exposing the entire index to a customized Google search. That means anything from the old Bioboards will be searchable using full Google syntax, which is a whole lot more powerful than what the forum search can do. Like I said earlier, I'm also adding an IRC-bot front-end, so when you're in the IRC channels, you will be able to ask questions and get a link to the best thread that might help you.

So, it's a matter of security, safety, and making the old content usable by the community.
I have over 30,000 pages done so far and an almost 100% success rate in my parser.

Now, what I really wanna know, is if it took me a day to make a program, which is a total hack-job, that can pull the posts out of their messy pages, why couldn't they have 2 professional developers spend 2 hours to write a script to pull the old posts out of the database and import them here? Sounds like professional nonsense, to me. If they're interested, they can have a copy of my app and use that to move all their threads. :P

I’ve stopped backing up the NWN forums. I have 17.84 GB of files, which I’m guessing is half of the 98,450 topics in BioWare’s NWN forums. After downloading nonstop for 12 days my computer was begging for mercy. Rather than doing another 12 days I turned it off.

The backup is now on an external hard drive. Hopefully we won’t need to use it.

A seperate section for CEP, now that would be a fabulous idea...

As far as splitting, well, that's a plea for more thought into the boards...

I don't know about you, but thinking is the hardest thing to do.. :)

Last I heard there is a bunch of new content ready for the updater but Acaos is having computer problems so any new updates will have to wait for that to be fixed.

It's too bad no one else has the ability to update. Been waiting a while now and everyone at the server is dying for new clothing and other goodies. Keeping girls from new clothing is a bad idea!

This si often why servers compile clothing haks. They usually contain the CEP clothing and material from a number of other sources that the CEP team hasn't used for mostly obvious reasons.
