Thinking about making a Sentinel

existing Paragade Shep and I was wondering about any advantages there
might be over using a Soldier for so long and if there is any changes in
playstyle I would have to make.

So if you like to pick things off from range, I would go with a sniper rifle, and just use the locust for AR ranges.
Beyond that, if your going to be playing a less aggressive sentinal, you should probably get the power armor upgrade. With power armor, you will get a power damage boost while its up.
As for difference in play style. As a soldier you use your guns/ammo as your powers. With a sentinel you will basically be shooting and using powers. Shoot/overload for shields, shoot/warp for armor/barriers.
If you played a lot as a soldier, I won't go into detail on what weapons are best for certain protection types because of the fact you should already know.

If you have the Kasumi dlc, there really isn't any point in choosing the AR upgrade for the smg classes. It out dps' every assault rifle except for the vindicator and revenant.

True enough on the AR and I might just get the sniper upgrade if I get to use more than just the Widow since I dont really care for it being so low on ammo compared to the others, plus Incisor is just godly. Bonus wise even though I will already have options for it, I still plan on using AP/Tungsten since it tears everything that isnt a shield or barrier to shreds and I can rip away shields and barriers with Warp or Overload
Recommedations on Armor? I am planning on the Kestrel set since the entire thing screams Sentinel with the ~20% boost to shields and ~10-15% boost to weapon damage already granted before Power Armor is activated.

That does sound interesting but I will already have enough protection between Tech Armor and Kestrel set and another increase in damage never hurts.

As for the widow, it is only available to soldiers and infiltrators. So you will have the mantis, viper, and incisor if you choose the sniper upgrade for the sentinel.
Also, the comment on fortification. It offers nothingmore then barrier or geth shield boost. If you want a power like that go with the geth shield boost for the increased weapon damage. Tech armor just extends your shields, it is not an extra layer. So fortification, barrier, or geth shield boost just extend that further.

Personally, I use blood dragon. If your going to go the kestrel route, I would get the shotgun upgrade. There's no point in using the kestrel stuff if your not going to be aggressive. That' just my opinion though... use whatever you like.

I tend to be agressive anyway short of getting out for suicide. Kestrel is still good all around for Sentinels, though I wish that Bioware would patch in a helmet toggle for convos already so I can use the full set.
I would still prefer to have Tungsten since I go between agressive and defensive when needed and it helps destroy almost everything that you can tear through between powers. Might consider getting into GSB is the boost to damage turns out not to be worth it.

Don't forget the 30% damage to melee attacks. That is why I mentioned the shotgun upgrade.
I would consider that what makes Kestrel into the best thing for Vanguards since the game came out. Since I dont see myself getting balls deep in a fight to make a kill, I might go with sniper so I can have some ranged options for more dicey fights.

Not neccesarily true, Targets affected by biotics will double the damage of warp ammo and warp ammo is effective against barriers, but regardless I was merely commenting on tacking an ammo power to make the Sent completely well rounded

Tungsten is 70% against everything excepting shields and barriers and those can be stripped with a well placed Warp/Overload compared to Warp's main benefits being over barriers.Cloaking_Thane wrote...

Differences in playstyle could be fairly negligible since the way you played your Soldier can be carried over to the Sentinel at short or medium ranges. The Soldier will be better at longer ranges since you will have the Sniper with Adrenaline Boost. So if you played a long-range Soldier it might be a bit of a change...
Biggest change with the Sentinel vs. the Soldier is the need to use your abilities continuously to get the most out of the Sentinel class. The Sentinel's survivability hinges a lot on its Tech Armor and its damage output hinges on its multiple abilities for almost any defenses in the game.
Addressing the subsequent comments, I love Shield powers (Barrier, Fortification, Geth Shield Boost) but I don't think you really need it for the Sentinel. This is opposed to the ammo types already discussed, Warp or Armor Piercing, both of which are equally viable overall as far as I'm concerned. Just my two cents though, if you like having double defenses, go for it.

I wouldn't say one is much better than the other in regard to Tungsten vs. Warp Ammo. It just depends on the class and mission
Quite true, my point was that IMO a sent should take an ammo power then all bases are coved for sure.
But, for example if you pull or thow an enemy, then hit them w/ full warp ammo, damage will be + 100%
--Just respect for Barrier missions and Armor missions...........Ezo is frequent and there are internets to tell you the planets to scan!

@the OP's original question, the Sentinel will do less damage than your Soldier on average since it misses natural ammo types and the very spammable Adrenaline Rush. A good Sentinel should have very few deaths though, probably less than the Soldier for myself personally at least.

Never had any trouble with my solder since using the right ammo was all that really mattered. Sentinel should make for a good fit for me along with Tungsten since its that slight edge over Warp imo, even though both are damn close in usage.
Main reasoning to keep with Tungsten is that I have powers for stripping away any annoyance while finishing the job with weapons at hand. Biggest challenge I see is getting used to a semi-limited weapon set comparted to the Soldier carrying the entire armory with them.

This misses some decently difficult parts like Horizon and forces you into the standard playmode of the Sentinel (power spam + Tech Armor) rather than the more versatile approaches of the Soldier. You'll also find yourself forced into getting weapons that you might not have needed as much on the Soldier: for example, doing Kasumi's mission early if you have it (for the Locust), or Tali's mission for the Tempest SMG (which you'll use a lot).
Just throwing that out there. As an unnecessary tidbit I'll throw in that I picked Tungsten and it worked great.
EDIT: Of course, this is if you're not going New Game +, which I don't think you are.

I should actually add that the Sentinel can't use the Shotgun until mid-game, thereby making the short-range tactic I mentioned a little harder to reach than the Soldier, who always has that trusty Shotgun. Same goes for the Sentinel's potential choice of an A-R for mid or SR for long-range.

It will be a first time run with a Sentinel off an import char so yeah it might be tough but I have a habit of spaming the hell out of warp and overload like a new player at least until I get more into a power position. I dont have to rely on ADR to get off good snipes since I only went to use it if I had a cluster to make in a short time.

Small note but as Fortification is a combat ability it does not benefit from the passive tech/biotic cooldown bonuses. As a result the Geth Shield Boost is the ideal choice for a Sentinel as it increases their Tech Armor capacity and can recharge the entire shield amount every time it (or Tech Armor) is recast.

For ammo powers I bring along Jacob or Grunt for squad incendiary or Zaeed for squad disruptor.
What the previous posters have said about the Locust is correct, but I still prefer AR-training for the Vindicator. Once I have that, I switch my SMG to the Tempest for short range work.
For armour I wear either the Blood Dragon armour or the following N7/Kestrel combo:
Sentry visor
N7 chest plate
amplifier shoulder plates
Kestrel arm and leg plates

hmmm it's actually ridiculously good. Sentinel was the first class I beat insanity with. Personally, I found the class to be OP but incredibly boring to play.
