Sorry.  You chose an inadequate machine to try running games on.  First, laptops as a class simply aren't supported.  Next, the minimum desktop graphics card from the HD 5n00 generation is the HD 5570.  There doesn't seem to be any such desktop card as a "5470", so perhaps you actually have a Mobile HD 5570 instead?

I don't know what your problem is, but I can tell you that the problem is not because your laptop cannot play Mass Effect at all.  I have the same video card as you do, along with a weaker processor (an i3 instead of an i5), and my laptop can play it quite fine at high details and textures- the frame rate hovers at 30 FPS, which some might find unacceptable, but it works for me.  You can dial down the details and textures to get better performance.  Either way, it is certainly playable on your laptop.

My advice is to try uninstalling and reinstalling the game.  Beyond that I can't help you.

And Gorath, no, the Mobility 5470 is not a laptop counterpart to the desktop 5570, if that's what you are suggesting.  The 5470 only has 80 stream processors and a 64 bit memory bus width, compared to the 5570's 400 stream processors and 128 bit memory bus width.  The closest laptop counterpart to the 5570 is probably the Mobility 5770, which has the same amount of stream processors, memory bus width, and clock speed (650 MHz).  The Mobility 5470 is simply a Mobility 5450 with a higher clock speed, which is in turn the laptop counterpart of the desktop 5450.

Laptops get no official support.  I personally would never waste my time and money to end up with what I would consider to be an inadequate game platform.  I have an elderly laptop for travelling and staying in contact with my eMail.  It doesn't play games, I would never want it to do so.

That being said, I volunteer some time here and offer what I can, even to laptop owners.  I have no intention of trying to memorize laptop video card options.  I'm already overstretched with regard to desktop cards.  GPU review is my first stop for desktop card specifications.  There are very few laptop specs included there.

Mass Effect 1 wasn't planned for the PC when designed.  Bioware didn't perform the port from the X360, but it was far from a clean transfer, and in most regards, ME-2 runs better on less well equipped systems than ME-1 does.  That doesn't count on the feedback mechanism used in ME-2 for environmental interaction, however.

Officially, if a video card gets as few as 16 FPS, consistently, even that bad of a card should still work.  Unofficially. low end cards just aren't consistent, so failures to interact will still happen for cards that average 20 FPS.

notebookcheck.net is a good website for looking up notebook video cards (and processors). They review various notebooks and run benchmarks for games and processor applications. (They rank video cards according to the average score in 3D Mark 05 and processors according to the average score in Cinebench R10, I believe).

I fully acknowledge the advantages of desktops over laptops. I don't really have a choice, as I'm going to college and will need a mobile computing solution. For now a relatively inexpensive laptop with a 5470 will suffice, and the money I save by not buying a more powerful laptop will eventually contribute to building a real gaming PC- one which will be a more cost-effective and long-term investment.

Gorath, I don't mean to stomp on your contributions, but you bring up the "bad graphics card" thing quite a lot. I understand your reasons, but in many cases you seem to underestimate the power of laptop graphics setups. I also understand your reasons regarding this, and the "no support for laptops" claim.

However, one of the most important features of this support forum, is that it's not official tech support either. It's a forum for users to help other users, so we get the chance to request unofficial support from each other, for unnoficial support issues.

He does have good reason to be pessimistic about the power of the laptop video card in question. The laptop Radeon HD 5470, like the desktop Radeon HD 5450, is conceived as a business graphics card, not one that can handle the latest games. It can handle such games at low resolutions/textures, but it's not meant to. Unfortunately, such news does not aid laptop owners, as they are unable to upgrade.
