That's a photo of Mars. I like how they used a photo of Mars instead of making an image themselves. The "Rift" is actually Valles Marineris, a natural formation.

Yes, Klendahgon's appearance is actually a real-life depiction of Mars.
It's not necessarily indentical. The planet was clearly inspired by Mars if anything.didymos1120 wrote...

No, it's not. Just look at the pictures: they simply do not match. Klendagon =/= Mars.

No, this is a photo of Mars:
As you can see, they're not identical. Rather different in many details, in fact. Based on it? Yeah. Copied wholesale? No.

There is a possibility that there will be another reseaerch of it, but if it was relevant, it would've been part of ME2.Siansonea II wrote...
The Illusive Man tells you that in addition to the Derelict Reaper, Cerberus had also located the weapon that killed it, the weapon that glanced off the planet Klendagon and created the Great Rift. He says the weapon is defunct, and after 37 million years I'd say he's probably not lying, but do you think that an 'autopsy' of this weapon is the key to building a weapon to stop the Reapers?
I'm very curious about the race that created the weapon, and how they knew they needed the weapon in the first place, given the Reapers surprise attack modus operandi. I'm wondering if any of it will be addressed in ME3.
I'm sure this has probably been discussed already, but I couldn't find an active topic about it.

It's not identical but are you people seriously arguing that Adam_grif was off the mark when he said they used a picture of Mars to depict Klendagon? Obviously they edited the details but give me a break.

I personally knew it was a depiction of Mars the second I saw it.
If you were on the old BioWare forum, people asked for Mars a lot, seeing as how it plays a role in the storyline and whatnot. The developers didn't seem to care, though. I was really anticipating a Mars mission in ME2, but unfortunately there wasn't anything. This, however, could be a hint that Mars may very well make an appearance in ME3, especially since BioWare listened to us about almost everything else. But I'm not holding my breath.Shandepared wrote...

When I first saw the trailers for Mass Effect I assumed we'd get to drive around on Phobos or Deimos. Personally I'm still a little surprised that in a big space game that you'd never have a Mars level... Maybe the Protheans will be more important in ME3 and we'll get to go there finally.

Not letting us land on Earth, but having a mission on the Moon was a HUGE ****tease in the first Mass Effect. I'm fairly certain we will see Earth in ME3, however.
Oh yes! The Moon mission was actually part of the reason I was motivated enough to buy ME1. Still enjoy it to this day.adam_grif wrote...

1. Discover threat.
2. Learn about threat and how to stop it.
3. Stop threat.

It's actually "They are [Collectors/Reapers] going to target Earth".
The squadmate was referring to the Collectors and the stasis pods in their ship can possibly hold every human living on Earth, if not the whole galaxy.
But since the Collectors were working for the Reapers, then this quote might hold weight.
