Ladies and Gentlemen, be not afraid! This is a brave new dawn, a fresh start, a time for celebration, not mourning!

This is our home now, and while it may seem strange and confusing I believe we're going to settle in just fine.

I mean, just look at all those new smileys! And crazy font colours! What more could we want?

Anyway, in honour of the new forums (and to keep this relatively on-topic) I'm going to make good on my mutterings for the past few years and actually play these damn games through again. If nothing else, I'm in need of refreshing my knowledge in order to answer people's problems properly.

I'm thinking a canonical party (ish), Ranger/Cleric PC and maybe SCS just to punish myself for staying away so long.

PC
Imoen->Yoshimo->Imoen
Jaheira
Minsc
Dynaheir->Aerie
Khalid->Haer'Dalis

Progress reports will hopefully follow, and feel free to use this as a base of operations for huddling together against the terrifying bright lights of a new forum. I can't huddle alone! :crying:

Refugees! Ha ha. I feel like I was just pulled from the water or something.

Got to say that was not much of a warning after we were told we would get a "sufficient" one, weren't we? Thankfully I wasn't off on vacation or something, although some people might be. Hopefully the old forums will remain up for awhile and they will just disable to posting functionality from them so people can read where we went instead of having to take days or weeks and go "oh, yeah, but what was the address for that?"

I am currently trying an Aerie solo to pair with my just finished Korgan solo through SoA. She's a slow starter, plus it's forcing me to learn the tactics to go along with a solo mage.

You do get a week's notice, and the other forums will just be archived like the rest, not shuttered completely, so no one will get lost. No worries!

Play on! Shiny new home for a classic.

Well, I kept Keldorn instead of Khalid. Because when you do his personal quest, he can say that saving Imoen will be his "last quest and then he will return to his family". Of course, he never does, Either it's a bug or else.
(Also, when you give him Carsomyr, he gets quite useful in the Underdark :))

Well I usually ditch him after saving Immy and keep that free slot until ToB where I take Sarevok with me.

Keldorn instead of Khalid? Am I missing something here?

Who is going to do the healing for you?!

I think he's talking about Baldur's Gate 1 party to then be replaced by the newer members of the BG2 crew.

OR it is a mod, which I don't really know.

Yeah I was talking about the trilogy as a whole.

As I see it, Aerie is generally the first NPC you stumble across, plus she has the "replacement Dynaheir" thing going on with Minsc. The contentious issue is filling Khalid's place, and my vote goes to Hairy due to both his quasi-relationship with Aerie and the fact that she (through Quayle) gives you the quest to free him in the first place.

He's also just a cool character, so I guess that might sway my decision a little. My graduation ceremony is tomorrow, but I'll try to get this started at the weekend.

Eh? Khalid can't heal anyone. He's a pure fighter.
I was mainly talking about BG2 where he gets killed anyways.^_^

Nor Keldorn... I mean, don't Inquisitors lose the priest scroll and lay on hands?

And besides, Taifun, the PC is a cleric/ranger. Why another healer?

You are correct Dark-Lauron, inquisitors do lose those things you mentioned. Inquisitors are not healers of any kind, just anti-mages and in a way dragons.

PC, Aerie and Jaheira all have healing.
Aerie, Imoen and Haer'Dalis have magic.
PC, Jaheira, Hairy and Minsc have tankability (leaving aside the debate about Aerie being the best tank in the game etc etc)

A well-rounded party with multiple characters filling every role.

When had you planned on going to Spellhold? If you play with SCSII you may find yourself lacking in arcane magic (unpleasant). I can't say I'm entirely comortable evaluating Haer'Dalis' ability to stand in for a full-time mage, but he may do in the early game. But if you pick up Imoen too late you'll find yourself lacking high-levels spells for at least part of the game when you could have used them. Conversely, going through chapter 3, 4 and 5 with a low-level party can be a little rough (but certainly do-able).

It seems I succeeded in confusing everybody. :D (yes, that was completely on purpose, I did not confuse Khalid with my main healer, Xzar!)

Edit: By the way: Why is Chris now a double moderator? Is that a level up or something? Do his bans hurt you twice as badly now? Can he cast any new spells (Mass Ban!)?

I thought Xzar was mainly a necromancer dude, didn't know he was capable of some serious healing. :-D

If you give him one of the wisdom tomes he can dual to a cleric and do your healing for you.

That's the effect the normal moderators gain by being my friends ya know? Common moderators, become super moderators. Suppah moderators/administrators become DOUBLE moderators... This might have undesired effects though... like a third arm grown on the back, or a pet slave being sent to Santa Claus.

I liked the old set better. How am I supposed to express sentiments like :shake: or :evillol:  on these boards? It can't be done!

Yep, it's a pain not having one in a thread that exceeds the 10 pages (250 posts).

I still like the NINJA face whenever it happens to someone to... ninja a post? :P

Let's see if the old smileys survive the shutting down of the old forums.
