If you've played Assassin's Creed 2 you know what I'm talking about. That game takes place over a 30 year span and the main character's appearance changes to reflect that. Do you want to see that kind of thing in DA2? Maybe a male follower could start out clean shaven but later have a beard. A female could have a different hair style, etc.

If they did that, I'd like to have some control, i don't want to have a huge knee length beard by the end.

Fable did this! Its not an old mechanic!. Just I don't know if bioware knows how to go about something like this with out getting yelled at by another company. I already see peter yelling. They stole my ideas and bioeware shouting. But we make better games then you!

Well I mostly meant the NPCs, you should still have control over your own guy but maybe for example you have a bunch of scars from all your battles through the years.

scars tend to heal, especially if you used magic for healing

I'd love to see him complaining that someone is using the mechanic of getting old, I'm pretty sure real life used it before him.
Still, would be a darn good argument.

While NPCs changing in 10 years sounds sensible I can't imagine an Alistair with a beard or Sten with a different haircut... I think it would just be odd, faces of ingame people tend to be pretty similar, so changing the hair would make them VERY different, they would look like another character. Leliana in the DLC only has a different hairstyle and I would never guess it was her if I didn't already know that.

10 years? Minor changes, yes. Skin tone a bit maybe, beard silkiness, complexion.

Assassin's Creed 2 is not a good example of character aging. I don't think there were any changes besides growing a beard. At the very end of the game.

I hope there are some signs of aging for the characters. After 10 years of fighting the characters should have a few more lines on their face. I also hope you can change your hair throughout the game. I definitely don't have the same hair I had 10 years ago.

It's only ten years. Odds are Hawke wouldn't age dramatically, especially if he/she started off pretty young.

Things are pretty wide open for speculation with the lack of information.

I'm curious to see how the bit about being told in the past tense by various narrators works out.  I'm guessing that as time goes on we'll see changed versions of the cities and npc's kind of like you see between Ostagar in DAO and Ostagar in RTO.  The more these changes can differ based on decisions, the cooler.  Don't want to get ahead of myself though.

At any rate, that's a way of saying, yeah, I think the NPC's will age a bit.  Not gradually like a person would really age.  But whenever you get a new version of an area (note: personal speculation, not confirmed feature...though seems obvious), the NPC's could be a bit older or dead or have moved, what with cities changing and all.

As for the PC (player character...not personal computer or penguin commando), I"m less sure.  Letting you select how you age would be awkward.  Kind of like...oh by the way...put down that sword, Hawke.  Do you have a beard?  Yes, no?  Salt and pepper thing with your hair.  Some scars?  Or maybe a stripe like the leader of the Gremlins?  Okay, bam, you're older.  Now back to the game.  So I'm leaning towards your PC doesn't age or it's out of your control.  Unless, the time advancement has enough of skip that it makes sense to reintroduce some character customization at that time.

You don't have to make it be player choice - adding a few small scars wouldn't really change much about your char, but it would show aging. Depending on the age of Hawke, you could add some "salt and pepper thing with your hair." Of course, if Hawke goes from age 20 to 30, that would not be an option.

Yes, the characters should show signs of aging.

And I'd actually really like the opportunity to "retweak" my Hawke whenever there was a timeskip, too. So, whilst stuff like wrinkles and whatnot would automatically get added, I could give him a new haircut/beard/whatever.

I don't really want my character to age much, but it would be cool if, at the beginning, you were a child or teen, escaping lothering (notice the similarities to Fable 1, anyone?).

Nothing dramatic and out of the players hands.

Maybe a few eye winkles, abit taller?. don't touch the hair! i was going to suggest a few streaks of grey or a lighter hair colour but bioware aren't known for their hair.

Unfortunately aging can be notoriously subtle, so I doubt we'll see too much of it. Movies are much the same way: If you wanna show someone as being older you give them a beard.

Certainly it'd be quite possible to show characters aging though, It'd just require significantly more head morphs and the changes would have to be very slight. (And tbh, Bioware can have some really funky head morphs.... I'm referring to you triangle-jawed man at the start of Awakening)

Having Hawke age is another story though, and will probably happen.

I'd like Hawke to look a little older, maybe have some hair growth (obviously, you as a player would be able to visit Ye Olde Barbers to reverse this).

Yes totally. 10 years doesn't need to lead to any dramatic changing. A few wrinkles there, a grey hair here, bingo. I sure hope the character ages...
