Be sure you have the latest patches for the game. If you buy a recent version, the CD probably already contains the patch, but you still have to install it yourself. Look on the CD.

PLEASE NOTE: the patch links no longer work (as of 10Dec10). I'll update the links once/if Bio hosts the patches again. However, if you have the GoG release of the game, you do not need the patches.

In the meantime, if you need to find the patches, visit here (Sorcerer's Place).

WYVERN DEATH CRASH

I thought I'd toss this one in here so it's easier for people to find. If you have your game crashing just as you kill a wyvern, do one of the following:
  • set the game to a different resolution (and set it back afterwards) or...
  • scroll away from the battle just before the wyvern dies so that the death animation is off-screen (i.e. isn't showing). Since the animation is no longer there, there will be no lockup/crash.

If you are having trouble with your name box filling up with a random character (usually a number like '7') or with the game continuously scrolling in a particular direction, these tips might help. Some don't apply to modern systems, but I left them in just in case for those that have older builds.

It's likely due to a misinterpreted command from a piece of hardware. The fixes suggested are:
  • A simple reboot of your system
  • stuck key on keyboard - bang on key to get it unstuck
  • bad keyboard - unplug keyboard while play BG2
  • USB/wireless keyboard that BG doesn't like - unplug USB keyboard or disable wireless board
  • USB hub sending wierd signals - unplug hub
  • SysTray keyboard software - disable while playing BG2
  • some other app interfering - shutdown all other software
  • DirectX upgrade

For users of a wireless keyboard or mouse:
If you use a wireless keyboard or mouse, please be advised that you may experience problems with using ability buttons (stuttering between buttons or they don't work at all) and you may have various other graphical and interface glitches in the game. Here are some known possible solutions for the problem:
  • disable hotkeys on your keyboard
  • disable keyboard/mouse software on your computer
  • play with a USB or PS2 connected keyboard/mouse
You may also be able to fix the problem by turning "F Lock" off on your keyboard. It's usually a key that toggles it on or off to allow different functions for the function keys.
