I created this thread because I would like to see some of you guys idea's on if or why the squadmates will or won't return to party selection in ME3. I'm not going to do this on a popularity basis more on a "what fits the story so far" basis. Here's my opinions;
Liara
I think the likelyhood of her returning for ME3 is quite high, my reasons; she is the only squad mate I can think of that cannot die, she has the main role in Redemption has had alot of effort put into her story, perhaps the largest ME1 squadmate appearance in ME2 that out of those that couldn't join the ME2 squad (Wrex, Ash and Kaiden).
Ash/Kaiden
I grouped these two together since only one can be alive during ME3, I think if one of these does appear in ME3 it will be another cameo since only one can be alive their story pretty much stops after virmire and they both seem to be dedicated to their position in the Alliance and I believe Shepard has had less and less to do with the Alliance ever since s/he became a Spectre.
Wrex
I don't think Wrex will be a squaddie in ME3, in ME2 he is potentialy dead and is dead in a non-imported ME2 new game. If he is alive in ME2 then he is busy on Tuchanka uniting the Krogan and unless BioWare is going to further the Krogan species storyline I doubt he will be very prevalant in ME3.
Garrus
Survived ME1, squady in ME2 doesn't seem to have any other concerns at the end of ME2, like he did in ME1 (C-Sec/Spectre training) possible ME2 romance so unless there is another disater at the begining of ME3 its reasonable to assume he will be at Shepards side. Plus only Turian squadmate so far.
Tali
Basically the male romance option to balance out Garrus, again no reasons to leave Shepard at the end of ME2 like she had in ME1 (finishing her pilgrimage) her father is now dead and she seems alienated from the flotilla after her loyalty mission again reasonable to assume she would be at Shepards side come ME3. Only Quarian squadmate.
MIranda/Jacob
Connection to Cerberus (don't think BioWare is done with TIM story) both romancable and if Ash/Kaiden don't return they are one of the few human squadmates left.
Kasumi/Zaeed
If Miri/Jacob are in ME3 (which I think is more likely) I doubt these two will be in since they are more human squadies which build abit of a redundancy with potentialy 5 humans, they are dlc characters (not everyone bought the dlc) and they didn't have much spoken dialogue compared to the others. They are non-romancable and the only reason they were there in ME2 was because TIM hired them.
Samara/Morinth
I don't think either will return since its one or the other like Ash/Kaiden, we already have a more intergrated asari (Liara) both are only semi romancable. Once the suicide mission is over Samara's oath to Shepard is fufilled and she will likely return to her Justicar duties (although she does say to a paragon Shepard that s/he can call on her anytime). Morinth will more likely return to her old ways of killing she doesn't seem a very reliable or trustworthy sort.
Grunt
If Wrex isn't along for the ride then he is the only Krogan, has no ties outside of Shepard (apart from he's Urdnot clan) likes to fight the strongest enemies he can find and who is stronger than the Reapers?
Jack
I think her return will be highly dependant on her romance status as of the end of ME2, anything but the paragon romance ending with her I doubt she will return since if she isn't in love with Shepard I can't see her sticking around if there isn't anything in it for her.
Mordin/Thane/Legion
I grouped these three since they for me are the hardest to call, each of them are the only squadmates of their respective race, Thane is the only romancable one though hasn't got long to live, neither has Mordin since he is pretty old for Salarian standards. All three could go either way.
Anyway thats what I think, I would really love to know what you guys think.

They'd better hav Tali in #3. if they have any loyalty missions, it'd be cool for hers to involve concluding the Quarian/geth conflict. Maybe have Shepard suggest that the Quarians help the Geth build their mega-structure in exchange for their homeworld / colonies.

I support them all basicly, with the exception of Jacob, brought nothing new or interesting.

I think there may just be riots if they don't include Tali.
I liked Mordin for his humor, but don't really see him returning as playable.

I'm certain that Legion will come back, don't forget about the re-writing (or not) of the heretics and everything Legion implies, in fact I'm sure that both Legion and Tali will have a very important (although likely separately from one another) role in ME3, Legion could serve as a "guide" to explain to other Geth the goals of Shepard and so on, and Tali could well keep contact with the Migrant Fleet which I'm sure will have a dramatic role to play at least at one point in ME3, but anyhow something is going to happen thanks to Legion, I wouldn't have included him (or "it") with your Mordin/Thane duo.

While I would love Legion to return I just don't think he will, like you said his presence in ME2 implies a great deal for the Geth and the Geth/Quarian conflict but it's still only a potential story arc (I release everything is potential until ME3 is released) and one that hasn't seen alot of grounding in the previous games and since this is the final part of the trilogy I would lay money on the idea that BioWare will put their time into wrapping up older stories like Shepard/Reapers/Humanities advancement rather than fleshing out sub-plots from ME2, its the last game which means they won't have much screen time for it unless they are going to expand on it in some kind of DLC or book/comic.
Anyway cheers for the replies so far guys keep 'em up
