I'll have some new screens of Baldur's Gate city soon. I'm really happy with the direction it's going. Unfortunately, I was out of town recently and have moved so I haven't been able to work this past week and part of the upcoming week.

Basically, I'm holding off on playing DA2 (... mostly anyway ;)) until I get these screenshots out. One of the craziest parts of working on a big, long project is that by the time you finish something, you look at something you've already done and want to improve it. I'm holding back on this as much as possible (I'll save polish for last), but I think it'll make a big difference in BG city. Once the screens come out, you can certainly judge for yourself :)

lol thats because you learn and improve as you go along so at the end of the project you know so much more then you started so you want to go over the very beginnng to add your new skills...then you are at the end again..only to discover you learnt something else! rinse...repeat haha.

That shows attention to detail, dedication and love for the project. I'll take that over a half-assed early release any day of the week. Plus with a project of that magnitude you want everything to be as perfect and polished as it can be.

I just found this thread.  BG was one of my favorite games of all time, so I'm really excited to see what you guys do with it.  I've been really wanting to get BG from gog.com (my version was for Mac, but it doesn't really work anymore on OSX), but been holding off cuz I'm trying to finish my NWN2 mod (and have so many other games I haven't finished playing yet, including the NWN2 expansions).  Maybe I'll wait for this module to be finished before getting the original...

Hey Baldur's Gate team, did you want usable chests/placeables to not be highlightable with the "z" key like the original Baldur's Gate? I just submitted a hak on the Vault that will make it so, if you're interested. I think the game just wouldn't be the same if you could just use "z" to find those hidden items... :-)

they could be highlightable with the original game, it was tab or alt.

I think he meant something so that they couldn't be highlighted, so that you had to search for them, like in the original.

I believe this was one of the greatest weaknesses of the original. Pixel hunting was not fun and there's no point in handicapping the players. It's like asking for combat to be unpaused while in the inventory and having them only walk instead of running. Not fun, not challenging.

As far as I remember, the tab or alt feature was implemented in Baldur's Gate II, not the original. And I remember replaying the game several times, being delighted by finding the crates, chests, and caches that I missed before. I think the "handicap" actually made the game more challenging and replayable. Also, it was great playing that final battle without all of the best items in the game! But I can understand if this is something players don't want to waste their time with.

Indeed Baldur's Gate II used Tab and Icewind Dale used Alt for highlighting items. And to have the best items in the game, you still had to either know where they were or search everything pixel by pixel. Some items just were not meant to be found by human patience (Ankheg Plate Mail in Nashkel I'm looking at YOU :P)
And like I said before, the point of a remake it to take advantage of modern day conveniences, not just update the graphics.

It's true the tab feature wasn't introduced until Baldur's Gate II but I for one saw it as an improvement when it was. Since you aren't required to use it, and would take considerable extra work to disable.

btw, really looking forward to those new screen-shots

Indeed, the tab wasn't in vanilla BG1, but disabling it seems silly. I'd rather just that the "easter eggs" weren't there (except maybe the Wand of Frost, which is easy to find, anyway). I mean, they could be pretty unbalancing (*cough* Ring of Wizardry *cough*).

Speaking of which, are you making all the items (such as said ring) with the same stats they had in the original, or changing things a bit (double first-level spells is doable, but not as simply as just adding some spell slots).

I'd rather play in 480 resolution (or whatever it was) than play find the secret pixel again, it was absolutely retarded.

I'm working on getting them :) Still a lot of work to be done to clean up Baldur's Gate city a bit.

Good news: it's looking much better than before

Bad news: it's time consuming :(

Well you don't have to arrange anything grand. Just a couple or one quick random screenshot of something new, like a cutscene or new place, is more than enough to satisfy our thirst... for now :D

We are doing all the "special" items of the orignal game as close as possible as the original game but with the 3ed rules in mind.

Cursed items are in and work like in the orignal game, except you can't equip unidentified item.

Item with special spell and ability are in as well. Those special spell are done, and not out of balance for the 3 ed rules. Wich mean if an ability in 3ed rules is way overpowered it's tuned down, if an ability is 100% useless it's boosted up a little so it will be usefull.

Also keep in mind that if we give "more power" to the player than in the OC the ennemie will have more power as well.

For starter, all the magic user that you encounter in fight have all battle build and battle memorized spellbook with real battle spell, not like in any of the OC of NWN2 where magic user would have 5 identifi spell when coming to battle you and almost nothing to fight.

Fighter got real build, and magic user as well. No cheat with the rule involved but it change the difficulty and the challenge from what we had in the NWN2 OC to have ennemy that comes with real weapon and proper ability.

It's to respect the "BG spirit" where combat could be challenging and where ennemy that came to fight you didn't came unprepared.
