But Squire, it's not likely there's a big number of us who actively or occasionally play NWN2. Not enough to influence the RPG market.

If this module got quite popular to the point it would reach the ears of previous NWN/NWN2 fans, these guys would likely need to rebuy the game (thus generating more income for Atari) because they would have probably lost/or broke their copies (has happened to me twice, I've played these games for several years).

If it reaches the ears of other RPG fans, they'd need to buy the entire set of NWN2 & expansions as well. So more cash for Atari (although granted, NWN2 is on a considerably cheap price these days)

Also BGEE is going to include more content and new voice actors (not for original characters but new ones). So that's another reason big reason to buy BGEE. I know I'm going to buy it.

Either way I agree it might be a good idea to try and figure out what Atari's stance is on this either way. Would be a terrible shame if it did end up with lawsuit or Atari shutting down this project.

With the announced Enhanced Editions (BG1 & BG2), I'm hoping they leave this wonderful project alone. The last thing I was to see is a horde of lawyers come in and ruin this mod that I am super eager to play (I plan to buy the EE's as well as download and play this).

Actually, I'd have thought that with the announced enhanced editions, lawyers are MORE likely to come in and ruin this mod, because it means there's more potential for revenue to be lost. Perhaps someone from the team should find out where they stand with this before they go any further, as it might also be possible for Atari to wait until the mod's release, then sue the team for an estimate of the revenue that they can claim this project has cost them.

Maybe someone should also post links to this on Atari's forums too...that way, Atari won't be able to claim that they had no knowledge of this project, and (I think) will be required to give the team enough warning if they plan to take legal action.

But then, I'm no lawyer, so I can't know what action they're able/likely to take.

The team's doing it with no monetary gain, and is building it by use of a scripting tool included in the game. I doubt there's any real legal action atari could take. It'd be like trying to sue because someone drew a picture of elminster. If they were releasing the original game for free (pirating) they could be charged, or if they were charging money for their re-make they could be charged.

Not to mention these threads are archived and making of the mod pre-dates announcement of the re-release.

Even if this project affects sales, it means customers are buying another product owned by atari. I can't see how they'd have a problem with that, it just means that when they re-release NWN2 it will do even better since there is still such an active community.

I don't think that this would stop the lawyers. I remember that there was a mod for Warcraft III that was recreating Starcraft game in 3D and it was shut down by Blizzard lawyers. Don't know the whole story but it seemed similar to BGR case.

I hope it will not happen but our world cares so much more about money than common sense that is is possible (I guess I am 'glass half empty' kind of a person ;) )

A mod would be an outside progamming source. Warcraft 3 didn't come with a scripting tool, therefore they can say the programmers were illegally modding their warcraft so people didn't have to buy starcraft. In this instance the scripting tool is included in the game, telling players they can do whatever they want with it. Aslong as they don't claim any credit for the story characters or ideas they should be safe.

Of course the project is alive, it's just that Drew is owerwhelmed by work at the moment.

We should have the critical path finished soon.

legally no one can afford to discuss it with lawyers regardless of what is right, hence the law just does not matter and if there is a "cease and desist" those working on the project would just likely cease efforts.

The only thing that can happen is them telling us to stop, however such action would have a chilling effect on this community, and probably get a lot of negative publicity.

Of course they promoted that we can do things like this using D&D and Atari content keeps it all in the family - it benefits them more to allow us to work on these things at no financial gain to ourselves.

Re-Releasing Baldurs gate under NWN2 should increase awareness of baldurs gate and NWN2 increasing sales of both games, especially since the NWN2 version will likely come out after the re-release comes out.

As a practical matter, I think it would be wise to avoid releasing both at the exact time, as that would mean the players would have to choose which to focus on with them directly competing, thus decreasing how well both the NWN2 module and the actual games re-release do. Even then the effect on the official release would be minimal as the vast majority of players avoid custom content thinking Atari's stamp of quality assurance means less bugs ( lol little do they know ). Anything we do just won't affect things at the scale game companies operate. By contrast the community content would just get drowned out by the much louder publicity official stuff gets.

That legal stuff can be tricky. Companies sometimes need to show a willingness to defend their work so that they don't lose the rights to it down the road. Hence the corporate behavior doesn't always make economic sense in the short term. Personally though I'm not too concerned about it. They've shown a willingness to tolerate the modding community efforts; just look at all of the mods you can get for BG and BG II. Probably they see it as extending the longevity of the product line.

Drew was really really really busy for 2 or 3 month so the project didn't move during that time since what's needed is the missing area.

He got some time to work again on BGR since 1 or 2 week so things are moving forward again.

Slowdive from IWD is making a custom area for the final fight, Drew is currently finishing his work on the candlekeept return area, wich I'll have to script when it will be finished. After we'll need to finalize some area around Gullykin and Gullykin itself. And after that all will be scripted and done, so it will be time for detail, polish and fluff.

I hope for a release during this year, depending on how much Drew is busy with IRL it could come in 3 or 4 month if he manage to get free time.

There is between 3 to 4 weeks left of work for scripting, before all scripting will be finished, but for scripting I need the area.

Thanks for the comments and support everyone! The CK Return areas should be complete within the next couple days (it's taken *forever* since real life decided to get in the way a bit more than usual). I'll post a couple screenshots sometime this or next week hopefully.

Fun/slightly depressing BGR fact: I have lived six different places while working on this mod and have been working on it for more than 20% of my entire life!

That's much more fun than it is depressing (gave me a good laugh)! I'm very thankful that you, and the other developers like Shallina, keep working on that mod for all that time. I am following this thread (and the old ones in that other bioware forum) for some years and when I began to read it you were working on it for some time allready. Ever since were some people (including me) worried that you will quit working on your mod. But your statement back then was the same as today: "I put so much work and effort in that mod, I will finish it". But to really do so is so much more than just saying/planing it! It shows your passion for the good old BG! A big thanks angain for that to the hole BG-Remake Team!

PS: Looking foward for the screens!

Thanks for all the hard work! If nothing else, you can always add it to your resume to demonstrate your dedication, skill and hard-working nature. Some bosses love to see that type of thing.
