While I agree with Shallina in that seems to be the intent, the map Kangaxx linked to does look a whole lot better (kinda looks like BG1's map redone with BG2's overworld map style).  Each area having it's own name is a nice touch too.

That's the map used in the EasyTutu version I believe.

Anyway, I agree with both Shallina and Kangaxx, while the classic map is more immersive, I would choose the improved map. Not only it looks prettier and fits to a remake, but even Baldur's Gate 2 uses a similar design and not a classic map.

The map locations are going to be unlocked and appear on the map as you explore and progress thru the story right?

They aren't going to be ready and available from the beginning..don't want to forget where to go next and find myself at the end of the story lol had that issue with a game once..what a bug! lol

We basically decided to use the original map as a "throw-back" to the original game and because, as Shallina mentioned, it looks more like a map your player would carry around with them. I do agree the color map looks great and even better in many respects, but I think for our purposes and with our icons, the old map looks best. This doesn't mean we won't consider changing it later, but it's not the highest priority (it would be quite a bit of work to make sure the icons look good on the map and to re-align all the icons).

I think the map looks ok, but the "wood" texture around it looks quite bad. What can be changed of the background panel? From what I see, the full background is the default one, while you added the map plus that wood texture to make it square. I can try making something more artistic, perhaps actually making that a table where the map is laid out, placing some objects like a compass, quill, etc, around it.

Drew is the graphic specialist, he'll probably alter the background picture of the map later.

Now the priority is to to have a beta1 build for the end of the year. Everything functional before you enter BG_City.

and yes of course when you start the game the map is empty and got filled with new location when you discover them.

I hope you didn't forget to include the mage that comes when you click a specific grave too many times in Nashkel :P It's one of the secrets that is easy to miss.

As well as Noober and some hidden items like the Ankheg Armor (in the Nashkel fields) or the Ring of Protection +1 before entering the Friendly Arms Inn.
Without a walkthrough or the Tab highlight from EasyTutu they are almost impossible to find.

I believe it was a Ring of Wizardry in the wooded area south of the Friendly Arm Inn (same map as the Friendly Arm, just "in the bushes" near the edge of that map).

I just checked it, you are right. I was sure that was a Ring of Protection +1... :?

There are quite a few, but once you know where they are, they kind of spoil the game imo. Also I'm not sure how you'd hide them in NWN2 (I can think of some ways, but you have Z, so I'm not sure).

I never could find that gem in the woods where we have that first party with Serevok

Yeah, probably won't do any of the hidden "pixel-hunt" secret items found in the original BG. There's not really a good way to do it in NWN2 and it does kind of throw off the balance of the game a bit.

Well what you can do is to place them in completely different and new locations, so players should actually search everything, like in the original game and be rewarded for it, instead of knowing where to find them.

Btw will the grave mage in Nashkel be included?

Noober was perhaps the one element of BG that I could live without. He is one of those funny once jokes that get retold too many times. It might be more amusing to have some NPC thugs interrupt him during the third or fourth attempt at a conversation, then beat him silly.

Well the ankhead suit in Nashkell is the only thing I'd like to see return.

As I said the gem I never found, and what I never said I never had much use for rings of wizardry.

might be why I can't play wizards well....

but each tehir own. always wished I could of have one of those to sets of ankhead mails as a+1...

I only ever found the Wand of Frost by myself, and it seemed to be relatively unhidden, given there was actually I think a decent enough area and it was on that tree rather than just randomly placed in the ground. If you need to use a walkthrough to find the items, though, I think it spoils it a bit.

This is totally awesome work team. I checked out the screenshots on drechner's photobucket site and they are spot on. When is the project expected to be done and is this a community free-ware project? If so, I give you the upmost respect for doing this for all the BG1 fans. I just re-installed BG1 about a week ago and just finished yesterday and I forgot how much I loved that game after about 8 years away from it. Thank you to the team for this wonderful mod.

Thank you for the kind words :) We're expecting this to be done in early 2011 sometime. This is a fan-made project that is a tribute to my favorite RPG of all-time and will be absolutely free. Once it's done, it will be uploaded to the Vault for anyone and everyone to download and build upon with their mods. Basically, we wanted to do this to pay Bioware (and OE) tribute and give something back to such a great community.

Also, the screenshots are a bit old at this point. Expect to see some new, kick-ass screens once the areas start getting some polish!

Hey!

I also want to pitch in and say awesome job to everyone involved with this project.

But I have a question, BG1 only spans up to lvl7 (or what I remember) which isnt much for NWN2 standards, will the remake have more levels?

Actually with TotSC installed the maximum level for some classes is 9 and others 8 (161.000 experience cap).
The best, I believe, is to put 10 level as the cap since in BG you leveled much slowly than NwN2 anyway.
